I have served nearly six years as a Village Trustee over the past decade, the last two as Deputy Mayor. As such, I have
a record, one that I am proud of, stand by, and wish to clarify for you over the next few weeks as I ask for your support
to continue as Village Trustee - Principles behind my Wiss Hotel decision:
1. Along with Conservative and Democrat Members of the Village Board, I supported the demolition of the Wiss Hotel.
It was a decision no member of the Board relished making, and I very much considered and respected viewpoints of
those advocating for “saving” it, but, in the end, I believe it was the most sound decision to make.
2. After several tours of the building and several discussions with individuals who closely examined the building, it became
clear the structure was unsound even before its vastly deteriorated state and that it was “past the point of no return.”
3. After reviewing documents and photos from the past, it was clear to me, on both an interior and exterior basis, the
building represented little in the way of historic preservation value and even less aesthetic value.
4. With about a dozen empty storefronts on Main Street (plus numerous additional second/third story availability),
there remains ample retail and residential investment opportunities.
5. A cleared corner at the Rt. 5/19 intersection allows for the best alternatives of downtown green space (with many
possibilities) or attracting future commercial enterprise.
There were absolutely valid arguments for both removing and maintaining the Wiss building. That is why I refrained
from emotional debate and carefully examined all the data. LeRoyans can expect that of me on all similar issues in the
future as well.
