Superintendent of Schools
As discussed in my article
last week, we continue to meet
with stakeholders to finalize the
scope of the capital project and
to develop discussion points
that will allow all community
members to make an informed
decision as we approach the
December 3, 2014
vote. In this
article Iwould like to review the
areasof focus for the Jr./Sr.High
School andHartwoodPark.
As stated before, the priority
of the project is the work at the
WolcottStreetSchool.Thatbeing
said, there are a few areas that
need to be addressed at the Jr./
Sr. High School. Even though
we all still refer to this school as
the “new school”, it is important
to remember that fifteen years
have passed since its conception
and it has housed students for
eleven years.
Thebulkof thework isslated to
bedone in theparking lotandbus
loop.Thesechangesarenecessary
forsafety reasons,aswellasasset
preservation. These areas get a
lot of use. Another large safety
concern is the configuration of a
secure entrance. Currently there
is a buzz-in system in place, but
once someone enters they have
access toanypartof thebuilding.
An entrance is being proposed
that would require all that enter
the building to go directly into
the office.
Enlarging both the library
and the cafeteria are also being
proposed. In the library thiswill
be accomplished by opening
up a wall between the library
and computer lab and merging
these two spaces together. A
similar change is planned for
the cafeteria, making this space
larger and creating a large group
instruction spot for use when
lunch is not in session. Both
of these changes will help in
scheduling as well, making our
school day efficient, as well as
effective.
The most visible changes are
those planned for Hartwood
Park. The proposal calls for a
newfieldhouse to accommodate
locker rooms for boys and girls,
a concession stand and new
restrooms. A new entrance and
ticketbooth isalsobeingplanned.
The press box, which has served
us well for many years, must
be replaced. Resurfacing of the
track is another improvement
necessary to ensure the safety of
our athletes.
As I shared last week we are
committed that
this project
will
not incur any additional costs to
the public. In my next article I
will shareourprojectedcostsand
howwewill pay for this project.
