Inoneof themostexcitinggames
played at the little leaguefield this
year, thesixthseededYankeeswere
able to pull the upset against the
three seededWhiteSox in thefirst
roundof theScanlonCupplayoffs.
Shawn Morabito started the
action for theYankees by leading
offwith adouble.Morabitowould
score off aKyler LaCarte double.
For theWhiteSox,KennySaunders
drew a walk and Ryan Friend had
a single, both would score off a
TommySaundersdouble.Thefirst
inning ended 2-1 in favor of the
WhiteSox.
In the topof the second theYan-
keeswouldget singles fromGrant
Gilligan and Tyler Klien, but the
WhiteSoxkept theYankees score-
less. In thebottomof thesecond the
WhiteSox came alive scoringfive
runs. JackDuysenandZachFlans-
burg both drew walks and would
later score on an RBI single by
Kenny Saunders. Adam Risewick
drew a walk and he and Kenny
Saunders would later score on a 2
RBIdouble fromRyanFriend. The
second inningendedwith theWhite
Sox up 7-1.
In the topof the third theYankees
came alive and scored 8 runs.An-
drewTygartwoulddrawawalkand
later score on a double fromDoug
Irwin. Kyler LaCarte hit a single,
Jason La Sage andGrant Gilligan
both drewwalks. LaCarte andLa
Sagewouldscoreoffa2RBIsingle
fromTyler Klein. Next RyanHig-
ginshit a2RBI singlescoringboth
Gilligan and Klein. Bryce Lathan
hit a single and later scored off a
Kyler LaCarte double, putting the
Yankees up 9-7.
In the bottom of the third the
White Soxwould fight back to re-
take the lead. JackDuysenwalked
andKennySaunders singled.Both
were then scored off an Adam
Risewickdouble. At theendof the
third theWhite Soxwere up 10-9.
Both teamswere held scoreless in
the forth.
In the fifthAndrewTygart drew
another walk Doug Irwin singled
and both would score off a Kyler
La Carte triple. La Carte would
later score on a past ball to put
the Yankees back in the lead 12-
10. The White Sox again battled
back in the fifth inning to re-take
the lead. Adam Risewick started
off the action with a double, and
was later scored off aRyan Friend
double. Tommy Saunders then
stepped to the plate and hit a 2 run
home run scoring Ryan Friend.At
the end of the 5th the White Sox
would lead13-12.
In the top of the six, Andrew
Tygart drew yet another walk and
later scored off aDoug Irwin dou-
ble which would tie the game at
13. In the bottom of the sixth the
Yankeeswouldhold theWhiteSox
scoreless, sending thegame toextra
innings. In the top of the seventh
Luke Rider, Andrew Tygart, and
Doug Irwin all drewwalks. Rider
andTygart scoredona2RBI single
fromKyler La Carte. Grant Gilli-
gan’s basehitwoulddrive in Irwin
and La Carte to put the Yankees
ahead for good 17-13.
Pitching for the Yankees were
Shawn Morabito, Kyler La Carte,
Andrew Tygart, and Doug Irwin.
Pitching for the White Sox were
RyanFriend,KennySaunders, and
AdamRisewick.
Twins 7 RedSox 4
The Twins were able to pick up
a first round playoff win behind a
strongpitchingperformancebyAn-
drewLoftus.He recorded11 strike-
outs on the day while only giving
up7hits.TheTwinsoffensewould
provide some good run support in
the win. Led by ColinMcCulley,-
ColeRauscher andEthanBeswick
at the plate. They all had 2 hits in
thegame.McCulleywouldgoon to
score two runswithRauscher scor-
ing once.Chase Bordonaro,Tony
Filio andZachBaker also had hits
and scored runs for theTwins.
JakeHillwas the startingpitcher
for the Sox. He has been dealing
with a season long arm injury that
he is just coming back from. Hill
struck out 3 batters while not sur-
rendering awalk.
At the plate the Red Sox didn’t
havemanyopportunities.NickEn-
gel hada soliddaycollecting2hits
and 2 runs scored.AlexPanepento
had2singleswith1 runscored.Mi-
chaelCovert also contributedwith
a run. JacksonLocke,CoryWallace
and Jimmy Burns all picked up
singles for theRedSox.
SEMI-FINALS
Tigers 14 Yankees 4
In the first semi-final game of
the day, the top seededTigers took
on theYankees after their thrilling
win on Tuesday for a chance to
go to the Scanlan Cup finals. The
Yankees wouldwaste no time rid-
ing this momentum, as in the top
of the first,AndrewTygart blasted
a 2-run homer to put the Yankees
up2-0. TheTigers answered in the
bottomof the inningas they scored
5, helpedby anAustinSaeva triple
andZachVanderhoofdouble. Then
in the bottomof the 2nd theTigers
broke it open as theywere able to
use5hitsandwalks to score8.The
bigblow,abasesclearingdoubleby
SaevaafterReeceTrescowas inten-
tionallywalked to load the bases.
The Yankees scored 2 more in
the 3rd on a 2RBI single byKyler
LaCarte. The Tigers added one
more run in the4thonanRBIsingle
fromSaeva.That scorewouldhold
upas theTigerswouldwin14-4and
earn a trip to their second straight
ScanlanCupFinals.
Reece Tresco started on the
mound for the Tigers going 4 1/3
innings, scattering 5 hits, walking
3 and striking out 7. Giavanni
Caccamise pitched the final 1 2/3
inningsgivingup2hitsandstriking
out1.AustinSaevahadabigdayat
the platewith a single, double, tri-
ple,5RBI’sandscoredonce.Reece
Trescohadasingle, triple,RBIand
scored4 runs.GiavanniCaccamise
had a double, single, 2 RBI’s and
scored 1. Zach Vanderhoof had a
double,RBIandscored twice,Tyler
Williams added a double, 2 RBI’s
andscored1, andJoeyBrennanhad
2 singles and a run scored. Luke
Caccamise added a single and run
scored, JamesBlake scored2 runs,
whileRileyWood scored once.
The Yankees started Kyler
LaCarte on the mound. He was
relieved by Shawn Morabito and
Doug Irwin. The 3 combined to
pitch a good game and struck out
8Tiger hitters, 6of those collected
by Irwin. Doug Irwin also had a
nicedayat theplatewith2 singles,
and a run scored. Andrew Tygart
had thebigblast, a2 runhome run,
2 RBI’s and scored twice. Kyler
LaCartehad2 singles and2RBI’s.
LukeRiderandGrantGilliganeach
hadasingle,whileShawnMorabito
added a run scored.
Indians 9 Twins 5
In the second semi-final game,
the Indians and Twins would
meet one more time in the 2014
season, but this time for an oppor-
tunity to play for the ScanlanCup.
The visiting Twins would strike
first in the top of the 1st inning
when Zach Baker doubled, hitting
inEthanBeswickwhodoubled two
batters prior. The Indians would
come right back in the home half
of the1st.MaxinMcKenziewould
lead off the attack for the Indians
doubling to left. Tyler Slaven
would hitMcKenzie inwith a sin-
gle. Aidan Robinson would hit in
Slaven with a sacrifice and Brady
Fixwould single scoringCodyLy-
tlewhowalked.The Indianswould
get onemore in the 1stwhenTyler
Strollo singledplatingFix.
The Indians would get 3 more
runs in thebottomof the2nd.Mav-
eric McKenzie would reach with
a walk. Maxin McKenzie would
double and Tyler Slaven would
alsodoublescoringbothMcKenzie
boys.CodyLytlewouldfollowwith
a single scoringSlaven.
The Twins would cut into the
lead when Chase Bordonaro led
off the topof the 3rdwith a single.
He would eventually score on a
fielder’s choice. With 2 outs and
1 on, Colin McCulley singled to
right field scoring Andrew Loftus
from 2nd base. The Indianswould
equal that total in the home half of
the 3rd with bothMcKenzie boys
scoring again. The Twins would
get one more in the top of the 5th
after ZachBaker ledoff the inning
with a double. Hewould score on
a fielder’s choice.
CodyLytle startedon themound
for the Indiansgoing32/3 innings.
Cody pitchedwell allowing 4 runs
while scattering 5 hits and striking
out 2. Maxin McKenzie would
come in to close out the game al-
lowing1 runon1hitwhile striking
out 2. EthanBeswickpitchedwell
in relief of Tony Filio. Beswick
wouldallow2 runs from3hits in4
innings of relief.
Hitting for the Indians were
Maxin McKenzie (3 doubles),
Cody Lytle (2 hits), Tyler Slaven
with 2 hits (double), Brady Fix (2
hits), andTylerStrollo. Hitting for
the Twins were Chase Bordonaro,
EthanBeswick (double),ZachBak-
er (2doubles),ColinMcCulley,and
ConnorWright (double).
The#1 seedTigerswill now take
on the #2 Indians in the Scanlan
Cup Finals which will take place
June 17-19 at the LeRoy Little
League field.
