We are beginning with new traditions and a new Christmas tree, thanks to the quick action by the business council. The addition of horse drawn carriage rides and a poker run should bring out the holiday spirit. Sweet Betty’s will be back open to help us celebrate, as I’m sure by now we all miss it. Last weekwe celebratedThanksgiving, and every year I give thanks to the people who really run this village. Clerk treasure Eileen Carmel has done a wonderful job filling the shoes left by Sharon Jeary, who hasn’t stopped lending a hand around 3 West Main. Katy Eick has been a great addition, in the sewer department and police dept. secretary. The three department heads make it so easy to be the mayor of this community, with their professionalism, knowledge, dedication and friendship. We are truly blessed. While these department heads all do a great job, no coach wins without great players and we have Hall of Famers at every position. On behalf of the board and myself these people have our deepest gratitude. Please let the spirit of the holiday season put the joy in your hearts and appreciations for all we have and quite frankly some of the things we don’t. We are all blessed to call LeRoy our home. Parking on the streets over night will now begin to be enforced, however the board will be looking to permanently change it to December 1 next year with a common-sense clause. Decembers monthly board meeting will be 7:00 on December 14th. Get out and participate in Winterfest, it promises to be a great one. Thanks to all the folks who worked hard to pull this all together. Unfortunately, I have to let Santa Claus do the count down to the tree lighting, because I have work responsibility conflict. “Adiamond is just a chunk of coal who did well under pressure” Henry Kissinger Mayor's Corner Santa’s Elves Are Ready to help make the holidays easier! It now is the office of the Town Supervisor, Town Clerk, Zoning Board, and the LeRoy Court. #2 – Site of the Lampson Block – The Lampson Block was one of the grandest buildings on Main Street. It was built in 1873. An open arcade ran through the middle of the main floor. The upper floors provided meeting rooms and the best hotel rooms in town. The building survived a major fire in 1903 and was rebuilt. The building was destroyed by fire in 1945. Several new buildings occupy the site today. #3 – Wiss Corner – The Deveaux store was on this site in 1802. It shared space with the Globe and Eagle Tavern which was known for its huge sign with a large golden eagle perched on a globe. It has been known as the Graves Tavern, Ballard’s Tavern, the Collins House, and Michel House. A third floor was added and a huge porte cochere was erected over Main Street. In 1869, the tavern was purchased by John Wiss. It closed in 2005 and the building was razed in 2013. A decorative portico over the side entrance was removed and is now inside the Eagle Hotel, on Main Street. The building behind the Wiss, which is still standing, was a livery stable and the establishment of Dr. Sutterby, a veterinarian. Intersection of Route 5 and Route 19. Lake Street continues north to Lake Ontario. Clay Street is named for Kentucky Senator, Henry Clay. #4 – Village Hall – This brick and stucco building was designed by Rochester architect Claude Bragdon and was erected in 1913 at a cost of $22,500.
