LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - DECEMBER 4, 2022 built in 1802 and was north of the bridge and provided headwater for the Platt and Stoddard Mill. The present dam is south of the bridge, and was built when the creek was dredged for the WPA project. The depth of the water is controlled by two gates in the stone gatehouse. Wolcott Street – Named for Stephen Wolcott and early settler. At one time, the street was named River Street and University Street. #16 – LeRoy Central School – Across the creek is the campus of the LeRoy Central School. This campus was originally the campus of Ingham University, one of the first universities to grant a four-year degree to women. Two historic markers give more information. #17 – Gazebo which is dedicated to Don McKenzie in 1994. #18 – Statue of Liberty – In 1950, to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America, 200 8 foot copper statues were made. The LeRoy Moose Club bought a statue and dedicated it to the Boy Scouts of LeRoy. In 2016, the statue was repaired and set upon a new plinth. #19 – Woodward Memorial Library – The Library was built of stone from the Staunton Art Conservatory on the old Ingham University Campus. The Woodward family dedicated the library to their parents, Orator and Cora Woodward. The library opened in 1930. #20 – Trigon Park – This triangular shaped park is where the first meeting of the Town of LeRoy was held in 1812. It was named by Samuel Cox, the first chancellor of Ingham University. At the west end of the park is the Soldiers Monument. #21 – Methodist Church – The first congregation met in 1823. Abrick church was built in 1829. It was destroyed by fire in 1884. This building constructed of local limestone was built in 1886. #22 – LeRoy House – Built about 1822 and was the home of the LeRoy family. It is now owned by the LeRoy Historical Society. #23–FirstBaptistChurch–Organized in 1818, the Baptist congregation has met in several buildings. The present building was moved twice. The first time it was moved from East Main Street to Church Street and then in 1902 it was moved to East Main Street. It was remodeled in 1926. #24 – St Mark’s Church – The cornerstone for this building was laid in 1869 and it was consecrated in 1876. St. Marks congregation was organized in 1817 and the first church on Church Street was consecrated in 1827. #25 – The LeRoy Post office was built on the site of the former “Dock” building. Sidney Grannis, one of LeRoy’s abolitionists, had an office in this building and claimed that “Fred”Douglass stopped here while working on the Underground Railroad. Ernest Woodward owned the property and was instrumental in getting the LeRoy Post Office built. The Post Office was dedicated on August 20, 1938. Woodward financed changes to the original design to include the gabled roof and clock tower. Woodward hoped that it could be built of local limestone but there were no stone masons in LeRoy. Instead, it was built of Indiana limestone. The building was entered into the National Register of Historic Sites in 1990. Mill Street – Named for the grist mill, planning mill, saw mill and flour mills - A historic marker tells more of the history. #26 – Living Waters Church – In 1932, Ralph Blouvet purchased the Bank of LeRoy building. Charles Cromwell designed the interior with seats for 150 people. And 159 seats in the balcony. In 1941 the interior was renovated again. The interior was designed by Oscar Glass of New York City who also designed the Ziegfeld Theater. The marquee was removed in 1976. #27 – George Washington Block – In 1855, a fire swept up Main Street. Most of the buildings on the north side were destroyed. In 1856, the Washington Block was the first to be built after the fire. Above each window is a profile of George Washington cast in iron at the Washington Iron Works in Buffalo. #29 – Ellis Candy – The interior of this shop was brought to LeRoy by Gus Ellis. After the shop was closed, the interior was once again sold and moved to Corning, New York and is still an ice cream shop on Market Street. #30 – Former Smoke Shoppe - John Graham bought the shop from Anthony Reiselman in the 1930s. Reiselman made a molasses and waffle confections. Graham named the building The Smoke Shoppe. On the second floor was LeRoy’s only radio station. Ruth and Ross Harvie bought the building in 1968. 25 26
