President Christine called the meeting to order with The Pledge and 4-Way test, along with introduction of guests, Cody Offen, President Elect of the Rotary Club of Fairmont, WV and guest speakers Luke Weaver and Becky Elmore of LeRoy Recreation and Oatka Festival Committee. Announcements included Mary Young-Murray about The Walk of Hope August 13th from 7pm to 11pm at Hartwood Park, Martha Bailey about our annual Backpack Club food collection event at Save-A-Lot parking lot onAugust 24th from 5pm to 7pm. and President Christine updated the club that the Rotary Hot Dog Stand fundraiser at the Oatka was a huge success and she would have more details at the next meeting. Being President Christine’s first meeting, her fining session was light. Larry Boylan, Mike Tucci and Betsy Halvorsen were fined for missing the Installation dinner where fines were collected in honor of The Walk of Hope. Each were fined $20 which will be donated to the Walk of Hope in August. Guest speakers for the day were Luke Weaver and Becky Elmore, Co-Directors of LeRoy Recreation and Becky Elmore also President of the Oatka Festival Committee. First, Becky gave the club an update on the success of the 2022 Oatka Festival, which due to Covid had been on hiatus for 2 years. She said it was good to be back and have a strong festival again. The parade was a success and the vendors and charities that participated had a banner year. Becky wanted to emphasize that the money raised from the vendor fees and sponsorships goes to running the festival which helps them keep family activities like the rock-climbing wall, mechanical bull, and the giant inflatable slides free to families which she hopes were enjoyed by all. Next Luke and Becky spoke to the club about the Youth Recreation Program which is sponsored by the Town of LeRoy annually. Luke said that Recreation employs over 40 young adults to run the programs at the tennis courts and Wildwood Park and lifeguard at the LeRoy Pool. Individual and family pool memberships are available at the pool on Munson Street for purchase. Recreation also offers many camps and swimming lessons. All registration was moved to an on-line format this year and can be accessed through the Town website at leroyny.org. President Christine thanked the guests and all in attendance for coming and making her first meeting a wonderful success. Once on location Officer Stawicki secured the scene and observed an adult male with a severe laceration to his arm, which resulted in heavy uncontrolled bleeding with significant blood loss. Based on Officer Stawicki’s training, she suspected the injury to be an arterial bleed, a potential life-threatening injury. Officer Stawicki immediately applied her department-issued tourniquet to the victim which controlled the bleeding. EMS also arrived to assist at the scene. The victim was transported by medics to the hospital for further treatment. Based on an investigation, it was determined that the victim put his arm through a window during the disturbance which resulted in the arm laceration. LeRoy Police Officers are trained to use a variety of life-saving measures such as the application of tourniquets, Automatic External Defibrillators (AED), administration of Narcan for opioid overdoses, First Aid and CPR. LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - AUGUST 7, 2022 by Lynne Belluscio A seven foot bronze statue of Amelia Earhart was placed in the U.S. C a p i t o l ’ s N a t i o n a l Statuary Hall on July 27. It is only the 11th woman in Statuary Hall. The statue was paid for by the Atchison Amelia Earhart Foundation, which will eventually open a museum dedicated to Earhart in her hometown of Atchison, Kansas. Each state can choose two noteworthy people to be enshrined in Statuary Hall. In 1999, the Kansas legislature voted to replace their earlier designees by statues with statues of President Dwight D. Eisenhower andAmelia Earhart. Funds were easily raised for Eisenhower, whose statue was erected in 2003, but it has taken twenty years for Earhart’s statue to appear in Washington. The sculpture by Mark and George Lundeen stands on a pedestal of Kansas limestone and replaces a 12,000 pound marble statue of former Kansas senator, John J. Ingalls. Interestingly, the statue was unveiled two months after the 90 year anniversary of Earhart’s solo flight across the A t l a n t i c . H o w e v e r , she was to be known as “Lady Lindy” because of her earlier flight on June 18, 1928, as a passenger aboard the tri-motor Fokker airplane, the “Friendship”, piloted by Wilmer Stultz and Louis Gordon. After the flight, the Friendship was bought by Donald Woodward, packed up and shipped back across the Atlantic to New York. The huge gas tanks were removed and light-weight bamboo and leather chairs were made for passengers. Windows were carved out of the fuselage and the plane was flown from New York to LeRoy in time for the opening ceremonies of the Donald Woodward Airport on Asbury Road. Contrary to popular belief, Amelia Earhart did not fly into LeRoy. Rather, she was in Rochester in January 1928, and Don Woodward had a car sent for her, and she came to LeRoy on January 24, 1929. Her photograph was taken with the Friendship in the background and later, she was honored at a tea. The Friendship was a large plane compared to other planes at the time. It had a wing-span of 72 feet and was 53 feet in length. It was powered by three Wright Whirlwind 200 horse-power engines. When it stood in the door of the hangar, there were only inches on each side of the wings. Within the year, Woodward had sold the Friendship to a group in South America, who supposedly planned to fly it across theAtlantic again. That never happened, and the story of the Friendship is shrouded in as much mystery as the woman who became known as Lady Lindy. It is believed that the Friendship’s final days were in Columbia, and that the tail section was in a bar. The rest of the canvas and wood plane rotted away. A few years ago, Hillary Swank appeared in the movie “Amelia” which depicted the flying heroine in her early years. A replica of the Friendship was built - -without the engines - - and it was featured in the movie. The replica is now part of the collection of the Canadian Bush Pilots Museum in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada. Amelia Earhart in the Capitol Amelia Earhart Pictured above on Right

This month our meeting schedule has changed a little. We will have one on Wednesday August 10th and 3 W. Main St. at 7:00 pm and the other on August 24th same time same place. Last month the board took action to raise the sewer charge. The new rate starting November will be $48 per quarter and a flat $9.60 per 1000 gallons, this eliminates the current first 3000 gallons no charge. While this is a big increase it has not gone up in the last seven years and only the second time in over 20 years. The board understands that the timing couldn’t be worse but intend to keep working on the process and other things to keep your overall bill stable. The village is in the process of changing some light to LED to help with increasing electric cost. I will relay more information when it becomes available. Once again, we have experienced vandalism on the gazebo on the creekbank. We have caught the responsible parties and retribution will be made. We are spending money on cameras to help catch and maybe discourage more vandalism. “ You got to look for the good in the bad, the happy in the sad, the gain in the pain and what makes you grateful not hateful” Karen Salmansohn Mayor's Corner C L A S S I F I E D S You are invited...
