Albany made it more challenging this year with its mandates to Genesee Coun- ty (sales tax), Criminal Justice reform (I would take issue with its use of the term “reform” as implying “to make better”), and AIM funding. However, apart from the subsidy to LeRoy Am- bulance, we were able to keep the tax rate at .90 per thousand without reducing services. As I mentioned last month, adding the subsidy in to the budget, the tax rate in the Preliminary Bud- get is 1.08 per thousand. Voters will have the opportunity at the ballot box (make sure to consid- er the Proposition) on Novem- ber 5 to determine whether the subsidy stays or whether the Town Board removes it prior to adoption of the budget. Again, a YES vote carries an increase of $18.00 on a tax bill for a $100,000 valued parcel and a NO vote eliminates that in- crease. A reminder to be mindful and accurate when replying to census questions in 2020. NYS has been shedding pop- ulation significantly since we were kids. As a result, we have been losing representation in Washington, DC and, therefore, funding as a percentage of the nation. Under-reporting risks those problems exacerbating. Be honest but please respond. Finally, I had a great meet- ing with Franco Sella, Deputy Mayor (the Mayor had been called to Rome) of Asiago, Ita- ly, our new “Friendship Town”. We presented each other with books about our towns (the one we received will be on dis- play in the Board Room of the Town Hall- it is in Italian but has some great photography). It was fascinating to discover that Asiago was almost com- pletely destroyed during WWI, the number of names common in LeRoy that are also prevalent in Asiago (he said Rigoni was the most common but he also remarked on the others I have mentioned in earlier columns), and the fact that the asiago cheese we eat here is, most likely, not the same as in Italy (as it comes from cattle that are fed certain herbs/grasses grown only at their higher altitude). I would have liked more time to spend there and, although a little remote upon a mountain, I would recommend a visit, es- pecially if your family has roots there. Thank you, remember Vet- erans’ Day on November 11, and see you Around Town. A special thank you to Crossroads House for the loving care they gave Bob, Donna, Sue and all the rest of our family. We would also like to thank the LeRoy Country Club, Falcone Funeral Home, and Reverand Pepper. The Mills Family
