July 11th was another warm day in LeRoy as President Jim Ellison rang the bell for his first meeting of the new Rotary year. It was full house as we welcomed visiting Rotarians, spouses and new members: fellow Rotarians Laurie Mastin and Greg McAllister from Batavia and John McClug from Perry, Larry Boylan’s spouse Sherye Boylan, new Rotarians Tom Feeley, Betsy Halvorson, Jason Karcher, and Amber Dobson, and all of our Rotary visitors from Thailand. We partnered with the Rotary club of Batavia in Rotary International’s Friendship Exchange (RFE) program. The Guginos and Ellisons in Le Roy and Rotarians in Batavia hosted a total of 12 fellow Rotarians from Thailand this week. The group is spending 25 days in the United States, staying four days and three nights in our area. The Thai Rotarians visited Letchworth State Park and Oliver’s Candies, attended a Muckdogs baseball game, visited CY and Lamb Farms, Genesee Community College, the Jell-O Museum, Genesee Country Museum and enjoyed ice cream. This evening, they will attend an RFE picnic before walking to Centennial Park for a Batavia Concert Band performance. Thursday, they will spend the day in Niagara Falls before moving on the Rotary Club of Clarence. Announcements included two service opportunities: our Hot Dog/Hamburger Stand at the Oatka Festival and our Habitat for Humanity Build Day in August. Our Family Picnic in scheduled in mid-September. Few people were spared during the fining session. Bob Carlsen, Phil Plossl, Andy Rich and Bob Sullivan for missing the Installation Banquet. Their funds will be added to those collected at the banquet and benefit the LeRoy Food Pantry. Half the club was “incentivized” for being on a variety of lists and committees to help President Jim move us forward during his Rotary year. Barb Ochterski, Rotary District 7090 Futuring Chair (US), gave a brief overview of Rotary Futuring, a strategic planning process which we will conduct over the next several months. Our Thai visitor Benjaluck Aukarapasuchart (Noi) gave a beautiful presentation of Thailand. There are four regions including mountains in the north and beaches in the south. The country is largely Buddhist and they celebrate versions of Easter, Halloween and Thanksgiving. To the north, they border Laos and Myanmar. Lampang has many coal mines, elephant-riding is popular with tourists and they sell high-quality silk. Uttaradit boasts a large dam used for hydropower and tropical crops. Nan is very historic area where only bicycles are allowed. The capital of Bangkok is highly populated due tomany jobs. The twelve visitors included many past presidents, and Assistant Governor and past District Governor. They showered us with gifts during their stay and encouraged us to visit Thailand during the reciprocal Friendship Exchange in November. It was a wonderful experience! Have you considered becoming part of an organization which is wiping polio off the earth, funding over $35,000 in scholarships for local graduates, feeding hungry people in the Community Kitchen twice each month, and saving lives of babies in Uganda? Please help us make our community a better place to live. Remember to like us on Facebook at “Rotary Club of LeRoy”!
