LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - OCTOBER 22, 2017 LeRoy To Be Recognized LeRoy To Be Recognized for the Community Efforts to Save the Statue of Liberty by Lynne Belluscio The Landmark Society of West- ern New York in Rochester will recognize the community of LeRoy for its efforts to pre- serve and restore the Statue of Liberty on the Oatka creekbank. The award ceremony will take place on Sunday, November 12 on the third floor of City Hall at 30 Church Street in Rochester at 3 pm. The event is open to the public and I hope that some of you will be able to attend. The award includes Thomas Pod- ner of McKay Lodge Fine Arts Conservation Laboratory in Ohio, who did the restoration; Southside Concrete in Buffalo who cast the plinth; the New York State Office of Parks, Rec- reation and Historic Preserva- tion; Orcon Industries who built the special crate for the trans- port of Lady Liberty to Ohio; Bubba’s Landscaping; Lindsay Yoder, of Bero Associates who offered her architectural exper- tise to draw the plans for the new plinth; Rob McQuillen who made a set of working draw- ings; Bob Lathan from the Vil- lage DPW and Lathan Tree Ser- vice for removing and replacing the statue - - very carefully; and Humphrey Electric who in- stalled the new lighting; and the LeRoy Historical Society which coordinated the project. Also, I want to mention the mem- bers of the LeRoy Moose Club and the Women of the Moose who raised a large portion of the funds for the restoration as well as all the alumni classes who pitched in. The Village of LeRoy helped at the last min- ute to meet our goal and there were Wolcott Street students who helped, and the members of Interact and Earlyact, LeRoy Rotary. The Garden Club and Pully’s Market helped make the project successful. The award doesn’t mention that at last year’s rededication during the Oatka Festival, there were folks who raised their voices in song and verse to celebrate the patri- otic symbolism of this famous statue. And then it should be mentioned that the second grade teachers decided to include the statue in their study of immi- gration and the contributions of immigrants. LeRoy has the right to be proud of this accomplish- ment. It certainly is an example of what this community can do when it pulls together to make a difference. It is wonderful that all the work and effort is being recognized by the Landmark Society. We are very apprecia- tive. Thank you.
