Callboard

www.tanys.org Callboard - Volume XVI • Issue 2 • Fall 2019 Page 4 The theme of this year’s festival is truly fitting since this is the 60th Anniversary of the TANYS Festival! TANYS was formed by a merger of the New York State The- atre Festival Association (NYSTFA) and the New York State Community Theatre Association in 1987, but the first NY State Theater Festival was held Nov. 18- 20, 1960 at the State University of New York College at Brockport. We are so pleased and grateful for Rome Community Theater who stepped up, of- fered to host and gave us a proposal with all the “i’s” dotted and the “t’s” crossed. This year’s Festival will be the same week- end as always, November 22, 23 & 24th, 2019 at Rome Community Theater in Rome, NY. Rome Community Theater has served the TANYS in many ways over the years. They attend the festival each year, whether they have a show perform- ing or not, and have served in many other capacities including members serving on the TANYS board. Rome also has ex- perience with festivals, having hosted the ESTA Festival twice. The latest one in 2013 was organized with many of the same folks in charge who will oversee this year’s TANYS Festival. They have many fresh ideas for the TANYS Festival so ex- pect some new things. We are in good hands and you are not going to want to miss it! I am honored to have served on the TANYS board in one capacity or another for the last 20 years. It is wonderful to be part of an organization with a history of supporting community and educational theater. I remember one thing that im- pressed me most about TANYS all those years ago was the education portion pro- vided in an adjudication. As an actor at the time, I was always looking for ways to improve my craft. Later when I began teaching theater to high school students, Our President Says "TANYS is Forever" it became even more important and sup- plemented what I was able to give the students. I feel that TANYS continues to strive to live up to their mission. If you’ve never looked under the “About Us” sec- tion of our website, this is the mission of TANYS: - To foster the contribution of theatre to the lives of the citizens of New York State. - To promote high standards of theatre practice through education and example. - To encourage exchanges of informa- tion and knowledge through people-to- people and theatre-to-theatre interac- tions. Of course, the second thing that im- pressed me about TANYS was the annual Festival. Over the years I have grown to appreciate the time, manpower and at- tention to detail that it takes to put this on annually. We all get to enjoy the fruits of that labor in an atmosphere of sharing and networking with other like-minded community theatre people for the week- end. Remember to thank those commit- tee members who made it all possible. Looking forward, we continue to look for possible sites for future TANYS festi- vals. (Rome has committed to 2019 and 2020). If you and your company are in- terested in being considered or want to know more about what it entails, please ask a board member. We would be happy to provide you with all the information. You’ll find all the registration materi- als and information inside this edition of The Callboard. Register early and save your place to experience a weekend of networking with theater friends, old and new, plus some great theater. See you at the Festival!
