MAY 30, 2005 - The Le Roy Boys' Track and Field team completed one of their more successful Sectional Championships with a 3rd Place team finish Friday at Letchworth High School. The boys' team was led by Senior captains Dave Dreyer and Bob Morehead who both won Sectional Championship patches in their best events. Dave started the meet off with a solid 4th place performance in the 4 x 100 relay along with Mark Bennett, Ian Humphrey and Craig Tiberio. Dave then advanced into the finals of the 110 Hurdles along with teammate Bobby Humphrey who finished 5th with a personal record. "All season Dave has struggled to keep up with Josh Lathrop from Letchworth, but with 2 hurdles to go in the finals, Dave flew past him and from that point on Dave was focused on the second place runner," said Coach Jay Laitenberger. Dave shocked the Wellsville runners, who were seeded first and second when he grabbed the Second Place with a new personal record.

Shortly after finishing the 110 Hurdles, Dave was over at the pole vault venue getting his revenge from the indoor season. "In Winter Track, Dave was by far the favorite to win pole vault, but really struggled at the Univ. of Rochester and came up without points," said Laitenberger. "We all really wanted him to win the pole vault, if nothing else, to make up for the indoor season." Dave easily won that event before running over to the start line of the 400 Hurdles where he would again have to race Lathrop. Dave trailed throughout the entire race before finally passing 5 runners in the final 50 meters to finish 2nd overall. "In a matter of about 90 minutes, Dave scored 26 individual points and was on a 4th Place relay team but more importantly he defeated the ghosts of past sectional meets as well as his Letchworth rival," added Laitenberger.

Fellow Captain Bob Morehead out-threw his personal record by over ten feet in the Discus to win a sectional championship. "It was nerve wrecking to watch Bob sit and wait until everyone else had thrown, just to see if his 125 foot throw was good enough to win," said Laitenberger.

Freshman Marcus Epps threw for personal records in both the shot put, where he finished 3rd and in the discus where he finished 5th. Sophomore Craig Tiberio finished 3rd in the Long Jump and anchored the 4th Place 4 x 100 relay team. In addition to finishing 5th in the 110 Hurdles, Junior Bobby Humphrey high jumped to a 3rd Place finish with his 5' 8" jump. Sophomore Tom Bestor improved his pentathlon score from counties and finished 4th overall. Freshman Tyler Murray ran a solid race against several tough distance runners to get 5th in the 2 mile, and anchored the 4 x 800 relay team to a 5th Place finish. Along with Tyler, was Jake Sullivan, Jim Schwab and Pat O'Halloran. "That relay team has been running together since the start of indoor and each runner really supports each other, it's the friendships on the team that make coaching them so much fun," said Laitenberger. Dan Washburn also improved his pentathlon score to finish 6th overall, as well as Frehsman Ian Humphrey's 6th Place finish in the pole vault.

"Looking at the team, we have a lot of top returning talent that should help us get over the hump and better our 3rd Place finish next year. Dreyer has spent countless hours working with Ian and Bob has put the same effort into Marcus. Losing Dreyer and Morehead will be tough, but they have taught so much to the young guys on the team that its almost like they will still be a part of the program for years to come, said Laitenberger.

Both Dreyer and Morehead competed in the State Qualifier Meet on Friday, May 27th at HFL.
