Gets Off To A Great Start
MAY 2, 2005 - One big win and two school records is proof that the 2005 Boys' Track and Field Team has begun its season right where they want to. They defeated Perry in the first meet of the season and had athletes place in every event at the Newark Relays. The boys team then headed into Letchworth last Tuesday knowing they were the only team to defeat the Oatkan Knights in the last 5 years and Letchworth did it twice in that span. The meet would turn out to be as challenging as Coach Jay Laitenberger feared. "We knew they were going to be tough, we knew it was going to be a total team effort. Monday we talked about sacrificing for the good of the team," said Laitenberger. That talk turned out to be foreshadowing for how the meet would turn out.
Senior Dave Dreyer sprained his ankle finishing second in the 400 Hurdles and spent most of the remainder of the meet on the sidelines watching his teammates with a bag of ice on his ankle. As the meet started to wind down and Le Roy was losing, Dreyer made one pole vault attempt and cleared the winning height to give the Knights 5 badly needed points. Sophmore Captain Craig Tiberio, coming off two injuries, finished second in the 100 meter sprint and was on the winning 4 x 100 relay team. Tiberioís biggest contribution to the team was winning both the Long Jump and Triple Jump with new personal best performances. Sophmore Jake Sullivan and Freshman Tyler Murray easily took first and second in the mile and two mile as well as being on the winning 4 x 800 relay team. Junior Captain Jim Schwab finished second in a tough 800 meter with a new personal best. Freshman Matt Van Buskirk finished second in the 200 and was the anchor on the winning 4 x 100 relay team. Bobby Humphrey won the high jump with a new personal best as well as finished second in the 110 meter Hurdles. Freshman Marcus Epps took second in the Shot Put, while injured Senior Captain Bob Morehead won the discus with a new personal record on a sprained ankle.
Letchworth and Le Roy each won seven individual events but Le Roy won two of the three relays on their way to an 8 point victory. Coach Laitenberger said "there were several guys that could have honestly said they could not do an event and yet they never asked to be taken out of anything. Dreyer did not have to vault ñ but without his 5 points we lose the meet. The same can be said of Morehead at Disc or Sullivan in the mile or Tiberio jumping. These guys understood what they needed to do to win the meet." For the first time in at least the last 8 years Le Roy defeated Letchworth at Letchworth.

Coming off the Letchworth victory, Le Roy headed to the Fabian Invitational in Dansville with high expectations. Out of 16 teams competing, the boys finished second overall and broke 2 school records. Dave Dreyer won the pole vault with a new school record of 13í 6". Tyler Murray finished second in the steeplechase with a new school record of 10:49.5. Dreyer also finished sixth in the 400 hurdles and second in the 110 Hurdles. Bobby Humphrey finished second in the high jump and fifth in the 110 Hurdles. Murray finished sixth in the mile and was on the 3rd place 4 x 800 relay team with Jim Schwab, Jake Sullivan and Pat OíHalloran. Sullivan also finished fifth in the steeplechase with a new personal record. OíHalloran set a new personal record in the 800, finishing just out of scoring position. Bob Morehead finished third in the discus breaking his personal best set at Letchworth, and fellow captain Craig Tiberio finished sixth in the triple jump. The 4 x 400 relay team of Jim Schwab, Jake Sullivan, Pat OíHalloran and Mark Bennett finished sixth after a long wet day of racing.
