Le Roy Cross Country

When the Varsity Boys' and Girls' Cross Country teams showed up to do the final setting up for the 3rd Annual Le Roy Cross Country Invitational on Saturday, they were met with horizontal rain and driving winds. The course was already saturated in many places from a week a rain, and a large home meet the previous Tuesday made some of the trail very muddy. Despite the weather, the team prepared for what would turn out to be the largest home race in Le Roy history. The meet had over 200 runners competing, including some of the top runners and teams in Section Five. By the time the Varsity races went off, the rain had stopped, the wind died down, and the 40 degree temperature had risen to a comfortable 50 degrees.

In the Girls' Varsity race, Janessa Shearer finished 10th overall and led the girls team to a 6th place team finish. Christina Malley and Chelsea Baker finished in the middle of the pack with Robyn Dixon and Becky Wetzel right behind them. Chelsea had a dramatic improvement from her time a few days earlier. The girls team remains close in scoring to Wheatland - Chili who they face on Tuesday, Oct. 14th in what is quickly shaping up to be the most important meet of their season.

In the boys' race Jake Sullivan continued to lead the boys' team, with new runner Brandon Weig shortly behind him. The Le Roy Invite served as Brandon's first race of the season and his 29th place finish earned him a ribbon. Also scoring for Le Roy were Josh Lang, Jim Schwab and Dan Washburn. "We have 6 runners (Josh, Jim, Dan, Riley Carhart, Andy Judge, Derek Tesch) competing every day for the 3rd, 4th, and 5th positions on the team, and now with Brandon running so well we have a lot of potential to race even better in the next few weeks," said Coach Jay Laitenberger. The boys' team lost by one point to Attica on the previous Tuesday, but defeated them by 17 at the Invitational. "We are getting faster at the perfect point in our season," said Laitenberger.

Both boys and girls teams will have a tough day at Oatka Creek next Tuesday, as they close out the regular season with races against Cal-Mum, Wheatland - Chili, Avon and Pavilion.
