Le Roy Track
SEPT. 15, 2003 - The Boys and Girls Cross Country teams opened their season at Lorenz Park in Mount Morris on Tuesday (Sept. 9). Both teams are very young this year but have set high goals and expectations for themselves and their teams.
The girls were led Tuesday by Sophomore Captain Janessa Shearer, a transfer student from Pennsylvania and Senior Captain Christina Malley a 2001 County All Star. The girls defeated Dansville 27-32, Alexander 29-28 and Holley 20-43. Scoring for Le Roy was Janessa, Christina, Sophomore Chelsea Baker a transfer student from Notre Dame, Junior Becky Nugent and Junior Corrie Doeller.
The boys' team was led by Freshman Jake Sullivan running an impressive first race. The key point in the race came late when Sophomore Andy Judge and Freshman Dan Washburn passed an Alexander boy with less than a quarter mile to go in the 3.1 mile race. By doing so, Andy and Dan ensured a 29-26 win over Alexander. The boys also defeated Mount Morris 18-37, but lost a close race to rival Holley 24-31. Coach Jay Laitenberger said "Last year we went up to Holley and upset them on their home course, and we knew they would be coming after us. We graduated a lot of top runners last year and this year we came close to Holley with three sophomores and two freshmen." Scoring for Le Roy were Jake, Sophomores Josh Lang, Jim Schwab, Andy and Dan.
Both teams are home Tuesday September 12 against Bath, Pembroke and HFL. The home course for Le Roy is on the new trails at Bunnell Park.
The team will also be home on Tuesday, September 30 against Bergen, Hornell, Livonia, and Attica. The 3rd Annual Le Roy Cross Country Invitational will be on Saturday, October 4th starting at 10:00.
In addition to these home meets, the team will also be racing close to Le Roy on Tuesday, September 23 at Genesee County Park against Notre Dame and again on October 7th against Kendall, Way-Co, Oakfield ñ Alabama, and Geneseo. On Tuesday, October 14th they will race at Oatka Creek Park in Garbut (between Mumford and Scottsville) against Cal-Mum, Wheatland ñ Chili, Pavilion and Avon. The County Championships will be at Genesee Community College on Thursday, October 23rd.
