They knew they had their work cut out for them this weekend as they went into the GLOW “Elite Eight” being the lowest seed as the 3 seed. First game of the daywas for the GLOW Western Division Championship against the #1 seed in the division, Wheatland-Chili. Wheatland-Chili had gone undefeated in the regular season playing 5th Grade opponents, but had never faced a team with the top to bottom talent of Le Roy. The Knights have had a reputation of starting off games slow, and this game was no different. Both teams started off a little tight while trying to play through some nerves. Although the shots from the Knights weren’t falling, it didn’t mean it was a bad quarter. Guard Ryker Vangalio used aggressive drives to the lane to get Wheatland-Chili’s top player into early foul trouble as he amassed 3 early fouls, forcing him to sit out a good portion of the 1st half. With Vangalio hitting on 5 of his 6 foul shots and Carter McClurg adding 4 points of his own, the Knights got out to an early 9-4 lead. The second period saw the Knights offense come alive as Dylan Loftus, Blake Biracree, Cole Cray and Thomas Englerth all got shots to fall, while Harrison Porter anchored down an impressive defensive effort for the team. Le Roy went into the half with a 31-10 lead. The 2nd half was much like the first as Wheatland-Chili was never really able to put up much of a fight. Kiptyn Cone helped out on offense as well as Le Roy ended not only Wheatland-Chili’s perfect season, but their season all together with an impressive 56-23 victory. With that victory Le Roy won the 5th Grade Glow Western Division Title, and a chance to move on to the GLOW League Championship Tournament. Leading the Knights in scoring was Ryker Vangalio with 20 points. Other offensive contributors were Cole Cray (9 points), Dylan Loftus (8 points), Carter McClurg (8 points), Blake Biracree (7 points), Kip Cone (2 points) and Thomas Englerth (2 points). GLOW LEAGUE SEMI-FINAL GAME: Le Roy’s earlier Western Division Championship game earned them the right to continue playing for the day and move on to play in the League Championship Tournament. There would be no rest for the Knights as they faced #2 seeded and GLOW Eastern Division Champion HFL. A team that is consistently one of the top GLOW basketball teams year in and year out. Le Roy and HFL both tried to figure each other out early in the game as both teams went back and forth on the scoreboard. It became apparent early that these were two evenly matched teams that were going to give it everything they had all game long. Le Roy’s Blake Biracree, Dylan Loftus and Ryker Vangalio all scored for the Knights and Harrison Porter, Cole Cray and Kip Cone all fought hard on defense as the Knights led by a tight margin 10-8 to end the first quarter. The second quarter saw the Knights pull away a little as Vangalio got hot and was able to hit on multiple shots from the outside, and Carter McClurg was able to get on the board as well. At the end of the first half, the Knights led 23-14. Right when it looked like the Knights were in control the offense went cold, and HFL’s offense started heating up. Outscored 17-8 in the 3rd quarter, the Knights saw a once secure lead completely vanish as the game was tied going into the final quarter. The 4th quarter was intense, and went back and forth the entire time with neither team wanting to give up. The difference ended up being the composure of the Knights vs the composure of HFL. Le Roy frustrated the HFL team all game, and that frustration finally boiled over as a player on HFL was called for an overly aggressive intentional foul which gave Le Roy two foul shots and the ball back. Vangalio was able to hit on the foul shots to give Le Roy a 2 possession lead with 30 seconds left. HFL scored on their next possession to cut it to two points. On the following possession, the knights missed a shot but Thomas Englerth was able to secure the rebound and dribble it out with a huge heads up play to run out the clock. With the 41-39 victory Le Roy advanced to the League Championship game to face off against top seeded Arkport-Canaseraga. Leading the Knights in scoring was Ryker Vangalio with 29 points. Also contributing on offense was Dylan Loftus (5 points), Carter McCLurg (4 points), Thomas Englerth (2 points) and Blake Biracree (1 point). GLOW LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP GAME: Le Roy’s 5th Grade Basketball team’s entire season came down to this one game. Playing their 3rd game of the day, they knew they had to get out to a hot start because they didn’t know how much gas was left in the tank. Le Roy was playing a very talented Arkport-Canaseraga team that went undefeated in the regular season and was the top ranked team in the tournament. Le Roy, who came in as the #3 seed was hoping that Cinderalla’s story could last a little longer. Le Roy guard Ryker Vangalio’s hot hand helped the Knights get into the Championship game, and it looked like it was going to be more of the same in this one as he hit shots all over the court, including a 3 pointer to score 11 first quarter points. Dylan Loftus and Blake Biracree also came out hot as both were able to find the bottom of the net to make sure the Knights were not going to start off slow. Unfortunately, Arkport-Canaseraga had some very talented players as well so for every point Le Roy scored, they scored as well. The first ... Continued on page 7

LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - MARCH 19, 2023 by Lynne Belluscio During the next couple of weeks, there are some interesting LeRoy food traditions on the calendar. In fact, folks are already lining up on Fridays for a fish fry. And the internet is swamped with “Where is the best fish fry in LeRoy?” You can buy a fish fry not only at the local restaurants, but also at the Catholic Church, the Masonic Lodge, and the LeRoy Moose. Whether folks are Catholic, Methodist, Baptist or Presbyterian, Friday is the night for a fish fry. A bit of history about the Friday fish fry - Apparently, its origins can be traced to Wisconsin. Thousands of Roman Catholic families emigrating from Europe to Wisconsin in the 1800s discovered that Lake Michigan was a cheap source of fresh caught perch. During Prohibition, it wasn’t uncommon for bars to offer a free fish fry with a beer. Although this explains one historical source of the Friday fish fry, it doesn’t explain the history of the halibut fish fry that is predominant in Western New York and LeRoy. That will take a bit more research. Of course, coming up this week is St. Patrick’s Day with corned beef and cabbage, Irish soda bread, and maybe a little green beer. While the Irish celebrated St. Patrick’s day on March 17, the Italian families were getting ready to celebrate St. Joseph’s day two days later on March 19. In LeRoy, St. Joseph’s Day is celebrated each year with delicious St. Joseph’s Day bread. (And everyone has a favorite recipe.) At one time, many Italian families throughout the community set Joseph’s Day tables which included St. Joseph’s Day bread fashioned into a variety of symbolic shapes. Another interesting food associated with St. Joseph’s Day is cardoons. According to one source, it is only in western New York that they are made from burdock stalks. I have never prepared them. I know they take a lot of time to prepare and I find them delicious. As Easter arrives, the Presbyterian Church this year will offer the “Cromwell Dinner Rolls.” The rolls are named for Mary Frances Cromwell, who was a member of the Presbyterian Church and lived on Bradnell Avenue. She was born in Peoria, New York in 1896 and graduated from LeRoy High School in 1915. She graduated from Geneseo Normal School in 1919 and attended Columbia University and received her BA in 1927 and an MA in 1930. She did graduate work at the University of Virginia, the University of Chicago and Duke University. Frances was a kindergarten teacher in Buffalo, and was the director of the Nursery School in Iowa State University from 1930 to 1932. Her career included the State Supervisor of the WPA Nursery Schools and Family Life for the State of Virginia and a Field Representative and Child Care Consultant for Federal Works Agency in Washington D.C. She was an Associate Professor at Radford College in Radford Virginia and Associate Professor at Longwood College, in Farmwood Virginia and Elementary Supervisor of the Danville Public Schools, in Danville, Virginia, from 1954 to 1969. She taught at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia for 7 years and taught summer school for teachers in Nova Scotia in Halifax, Nova Scotia for 8 years. She was a substitute teacher for the New York State School for the Blind in Batavia. Yet in LeRoy, she is remembered for her recipe for dinner rolls. Sandy Brady sent me the story of Frances Cromwell, and toldme that when she – Sandy - first attended the Presbyterian Church, she was recruited to join the team that makes the famous dinner rolls. This year, they will be made at the St. Mark’s Church kitchen. (To order the rolls you can call the church office 768-8700.) LeRoy has many other food traditions. Mrs. LeRoy copied down recipes from her husband’s family in a small little book. The recipes include mock turtle soup and lemon pie and lemon pudding. Several of the recipes are Dutch and reflect the Dutch origins of her husband’s family. One of the best recipes came from Naomi Wadsworth of Geneseo. It is a fine recipe for “Mrs. Wadsworth’s Lemon Liquor.” In 1889, the LeRoy Library Association assembled local recipes and they were published by the LeRoy Times. The copy that I have belonged to Jennie Modisette Mathews. She was a graduate of Ingham University, and her husband owned a large milling company in Buffalo. Her portrait hangs in the front parlor of LeRoy House. I couldn’t find a recipe for fried fish, but I did find a recipe for corned beef. Probably the most interesting recipe is written in a poem. There are also “Rhymes For The Kitchen” which ends “But one might rhyme for weeks this way, And still have lots of things to say. And so I’ll close, for, reader mine, This is about the hour I dine.” N.B. – Correction from last weeks article. Missy Woodruff in 2012 was the first woman elected to the LeRoy Sports Hall of Fame. LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - MARCH 19, 2023 **Weekly Mowin'** * Trimming/Pruning Tree - Schrub - Hedge * Landscape Mulch / Curbing & Design Edging / Planting & Removal Bed Maintenance * Fertiizer & Weed Control * Spring & Fall Clean Ups Leaf & Debris Removal * Sod & Sod Removal * Minor Excavation Servicing the WNY region Nick Holly Owner/Operator (585)409-5520 GREENER MOWIN' & Services PROPOSITION 1 Le Roy Central School residents are being asked to authorize the district to borrow money for the purchase of new school buses and maintenance equipment in an amount not to exceed $280,000. This dollar amount would purchase two (2) 35-passenger mini buses, and one (1) 60 foot rough terrain articulating boom lift. All buses listed will include a two-way radio and built in video surveillance equipment. Le Roy Central School District has implemented a 10-year replacement cycle for all school buses. This replacement cycle is based on a history of mileage and usage. The District has found that maintenance costs, body repairs, rust damage and safety issues increase significantly once a bus reaches approximately 10 years of age, particularly as school buses must pass New York State D.O.T. inspections twice a year. Additionally, the strain of typical driving patterns create a faster wear on buses as an average school bus makes an approximately 100 stops and starts during a single day. All public schools in New York State receive a reimbursement from New York State for such school bus purchases over a 5 year period. The Le Roy Central School District’s reimbursement ratio is currently 90%, thus the taxpayers would be responsible for the remaining 10%. The District’s plan is to borrow these funds to align the debt repayment with the reimbursement period. What Does This Mean for Taxpayers? Cost of 2 Buses and Boom lift: $280,000 NYS Reimbursement at 90% for buses: (-$171,000) Less Trade in allowance of buses: (-$17,000) Local Cost of 2 Buses and Boom lift: $92,000 The total Le Roy taxpayer cost of buses/equipment would be $92,000 for this proposition, which when divided over a five year payback period is approximately $18,400 per year from the General Fund Budget. When this amount is then divided into the assessment value total for the entire District, each taxpayer will pay approximately three cents per thousand dollars assessed value each year. In other words, if your home is assessed for $100,000 you would pay roughly $3.00 a year for this proposition. The second quarter was a continuation of the first as both teams exchanged blows like two heavyweight fighters. Cole Cray, Harrison Porter and Kiptyn Cone all provided great defense for the Knights, but Le Roy still found itself down 2325 at the half. In the second half Le Roy looked like a team that had already played 10 quarters of basketball in the same day, as Arkport-Canaseraga benefited from a 1st round bye and looked much fresher. Thomas Englerth and Blake Biracree got on the board but a tired Le Roy team found itself down 36-46 going into the final quarter. Just when it started to look like Cinderella’s time was up, Le Roy’s Blake Biracree and Ryker Vangalio decided they were not going to go down quietly. Biracree hit back to back 3-pointers, while Vangalio scored 8 fourth quarter points to pull the Knights within 1 with 2 minutes. Right when it looked like everything was going Le Roy’s way, the clock struck midnight before the comeback could be complete. Le Roy’s next possession resulted in a turnover which ArkportCanaseraga converted to points to seal the victory. In the end Le Roy ended up coming up just short as they lost a very exciting Championship game 56-51. Leading the Knights in scoring was Ryker Vangalio with 28 points. Also contributing on offense was Blake Biracree (10 points), Dylan Loftus (8 points), Carter McClurg (4 points) and Thomas Englerth (1 point) The 5th Grade Le Roy KnightsBasketball teamfinished their season with an overall 9-3 record and a second place finish amongst all of the 5th Grade GLOW Basketball teams. Two of those losses came from a combined 7 points. This team was made up of six 5th Graders and two 4th Graders and played in the 6th Grade Division for the regular season. They played above their grade level and were not only competitive but excelled as well. They played as a team, always supporting each other. Throughout the entire season, they won with class and even more importantly lost with class. They are a team in the truest sense of the word and should be proud of all that they accomplished this year. It was an honor to coach them, and I thank the boys for always giving their best. I also would like to thank all the parents for always supporting the team and the coaching staff. The future of Le Roy basketball looks very bright!!! Le Roy Youth Basketball Continued
