LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - FEBRUARY 12, 2023 Special pricing on multiple colors. In-stock only. Genesee County Sheriff's Office Press Release The ONE store for your perfect floor. February 8, 2023 - The Genesee County Sheriff's Office would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone to remain vigilant as not to fall victim to many prevalent scams. As a general rule, it is a best practice to never provide personal or financial information to anyone who calls you over the phone or contacts you via e-mail or text message. Scammers may purport themselves to be a relative, representative from Law Enforcement, the Federal Government, a Bank/Financial Institution, utility company, or other consumer business. Scammers will often contact you pretending to be from a known organization such as the Sheriff's Office, IRS, FBI, Microsoft, Pay Pal, Amazon, or countless other businesses/government entities. The scammer may indicate that you have a problem with your account or there is a virus on your computer, and they need to assist you in rectifying the issue. • Scammers may ask: - You to click on a provided link - For personal and banking information - For remote access to your computer to assist in correcting the ficticious problem • Scammers may tell you that your daughter, son, husband, wife, grandchild, close friend or someone you know is in trouble with law enforcement and needs money for bail. • Scammers may say that they are a lawyer and that there has been a terrible accident involving your relative and they need money for legal fees or medical expenses. • Scammers may indicate that you have won a sweepstakes and that they will be sending you a check to cash and then ask that a portion of the proceeds are sent back to them. • Scammers may ask for payment in the form of gift cards, electronic payments or ask that you send cash in the mail to a specified address. Scammers may also indicate that they will send a currier to your residence to retrieve your payment. These perpetrators of scams will attempt to pressure you to act quickly by threatening that the problem will only get worse if you don't act now or that you will be arrested if the isssue is not immediately addressed. Scammers will mask their actual identity, often using surreptitious phone numbers, which may appear to be a local area code or use an e-mail address that is very similar to someone's that you may know. Always pay close attention to details as it may save you from falling victim. Please be suspicious concerning anyone asking for personal or financial information. If you suspect something may not be legitimate, tell someone you trust what the situation is before you act and potentially suffer a financial loss which may not be recoverable or disclose personal identifying information. If you fall victim to a scam, please report it to your local law enforcement agency. Time For New Flooring? 651 E. LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - FEBRUARY 12, 2023 by Lynne Belluscio As I was putting together the jewelry exhibit at the Woodward Library, Trish Riggi and I wanted to make sure that we included Shelby Jewelers. I couldn’t remember that I had any jewelry from Shelby’s. I put out a call to Jim Shelby’s wife Sharon and she was going to see what she had. In the meantime, I found a little jewelry box and a small little bag from Shelby’s and I found a couple of ads in the Pennysaver that could go in the exhibit at the Library. Jim’s wife sent me back a message and said that she remembered my son coming in to buy his wedding rings. Mark was still in college and his future wife had just graduated and was working on Long Island. She was here on a student visa and needed a green card. She had given a lawyer $2000 and he took the money and disappeared. Mark thought that if they got married sooner than planned that there was a chance she wouldn’t get deported. He went to Shelby’s to get the rings and I know that Jim “gave him a deal.” Jim was like that. Chuck Dusen married them on Valentine’s Day in the front parlor of LeRoy House. I wanted to collect some stories about Shelby’s for the files at the Historian’s office, so I asked folks to share some stories on LeRoy Then and Now. There were nearly 80 people who shared their memories: “I’m wearing the birthstone ring my parents bought me when I was 15 right now. After 50 years, its still beautiful.” - - “When I was in school that’s where we went to buy our class rings. Also, where we always had our watch batteries changed. It was so nice to have a local jeweler to deal with.” - - “Mrs. Shelby had been practicing with the ear-piercing gun on oranges, I was at the house that day and she was ready to practice for real... Not enough words to express how truly wonderful Ed and Eleanor were.” - - “Shelby’s is where I got my class ring.” - - “It was 1978 and after begging for months, Mom brought me to Shelby’s to finally get my ears pierced. It was such a big deal. I will never forget that day.” - - “ I had come home with our newborn baby that Sunday. My fingers swelled and I had to have the rings cut off. We pulled Mr. Shelby from a Sunday night card game and he met us on the sidewalk in front of the store. He said his son was armed in the store in case it was a hoax, There I stood bawling on the sidewalk in my jammies with my newborn sleeping in the car. I will never forget their kindness and compassion that night. We always bought our jewelry from Shelby’s.” - - “Jim called me shortly after the fire at the B&R Market next door. He found my rosary from my Confirmation in a discolored envelope. My Aunt had my name engraved on the back of the crucifix. I had forgot that it was there for repair. Jim was always so nice. The whole family was... Still wearing the last ring I bought there in 1988. A Mother’s ring. Such memories.” Sharon shared some of the story of the family and the store. Ed Shelby was a true American success story. He went to watchmakers school in Pittsburgh on the GI Bill while working nights in a steel mill. Upon graduation in 1948, he moved to LeRoy which was his wife’s Eleanor McBurney’s hometown. He first rented space in the drugstore at 56 Main Street to set up his watchmaker’s bench and do repairs. LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - FEBRUARY 12, 2023 Le Roy Youth Basketball Submitted by Ric Vangalio BOYS 5THGRADE GLOWBASKETBALLVSWHEATLANDCHILI (02/04/23):): The Le Roy 5th Grade Knights team came into this week's game looking to get back into the win column after a close loss to rival Cal-Mum last weekend. This week they faced off against the Wildcats of Wheatland-Chili. The Knights and Wildcats went back and forth in the first period exchanging baskets. Drew Spink and Benton Biracree did the damage for Le Roy as the duo combined for all of the Knights 7 points in the period. Lucas Miller and Andrew Sibley provided the defense, as the two teams finished off the period in a 7-7 deadlock. The 2nd period was dominated by defense on both sides as both teams only combined for 6 points. Wyatt Whipple was a dominant force down low as the Knights only gave up 2 points in the second period to go into the half up 11-9. Last week the Knights had a late rally that came up short. This week Eli Fortuna was determined to make sure it did not have to come to that, as he pumped in 4 second half points and Mason Biggins came up big on defense as the Knights held on and came away with a big 26-23 victory to climb to 3-2 on the season. The Knights were led in scoring by Ben Biracree with 12 points. Other offensive contributors were Drew Spink (10 points) and Eli Fortuna (4 points). The 5th Grade Knights face Attica next week. BOYS 6TH GRADE GLOW BASKETBALL LE ROY VS. WHEATLAND-CHILI (02/04/23): The Le Roy Boys 6th Grade (Black) team knew they were going to be in for a rough weekend as they were forced to play a double header due to an earlier cancellation this year. Not only did they have to play 2 games in one day, but the two games were against two of the top teams in their division. The Knights, who were 3-0 going into the weekend, had to start the gauntlet against a tough Wheatland-Chili team that was 3-1 on the season. The first period looked promising as the Knights defense was playing top notch with the likes of Harrison Porter and Kiptyn Cone who’s help side defense held the Wildcats to just 4 points in the period. Guard Ryker Vangalio provided the offense as he scored all 6 of the Knights points to give Le Roy an early 6-4 lead. The second period saw more great defense by Le Roy as Blake Biracree and Thomas Englerth helped shut down the talented Wheatland-Chili offense. Carter McClurg also got on the board as the Knights went into the half tied at 8-8, in what looked like a total defensive battle. The second half provided a little more offense, but even more drama as the two teams shared back and forth punches like two heavyweight fighters, as no team led by more than 4 points throughout the entirety of the game. Cole Cray helped out the Knights with a bucket of his own coming out of the halftime break, but it was Dylan Loftus who took control for the offense as his 6 third period points led the Knights to a 18-16 lead going into the last period. Neither team wanted to let this game slip away, and it showed as it continued to go back and forth. Le Roy found itself down by 2 points with under a minute to go before Loftus found Thomas Englerth for an open basket to tie it up with 30 seconds to go. Le Roy’s defense held tight for the remainder of the half as these two teams went into overtime to decide the winner with the game tied up 25-25. In overtime it was the Wildcats that would finally pull ahead and hold onto the lead despite a late bucket by Loftus to bring the game within striking range. The Wildcats pulled off the victory and put an end to the Knights undefeated season. The Knights fell to 3-1 on the season with another game scheduled later in the day against the Perry Yellow Jackets. The Knights were led in scoring by Dylan Loftus who scored 11 points. Also contributing were Ryker Vangalio (6 points), Carter McClurg (4 points), Cole Cray (2 points) and Thomas Englerth (2 points). BOYS 6TH GRADE GLOW BASKETBALL LE ROY VS. PERRY (02/04/23): As the saying goes, there is no rest for the weary. Le Roy, who just had their perfect season come to an end earlier in the day at home, had no time to rest as they had to travel to Perry for the second contest of the day. The Knights lost game 1 by a close 2 point margin, and they knew things were not going to get easier as they now had to face off against an undefeated Perry team. Not only did they have to face the top team in the division, but they had to do it without two key players, and losing their second leading scorer 1 minute into the game. Right off from the start the Knights realized that they were in for a long day as the size of the Perry team made an immediate impact on both offense and defense. Le Roy struggled all day with Perry out rebounding them 63-14 throughout the game. The huge advantage on the boards (giving up 43 offensive rebounds for the game) gave the Yellow Jackets 24 second chance points. Carter McClurg and Ryker Vangalio provided all of the Knights offense in the 1st half as they got down big early on and ended the half with their biggest deficit of the year 30-11. Unfortunately the 2nd half was much like the first half as Le Roy could not find an answer to the size advantage of Perry. Harrison Porter was able to get on the board for the Knights in the 2nd half, as was Drew Spink who was pulled up from the 5th Grade team to fill in for a depleted Knights roster, but it wasn't enough as the Knights fell to the Yellow Jackets 55-18. Leading the Knights in scoring was Ryker Vangalio with 11 points. Other offensive contributors were Drew Spink (4 points), Carter McClurg (2 points) and Harrison Porter (1 point). With the two losses on the day the Knights dropped to 3-2 on the season and face off against Attica on February 11th. 8700 Lake Rd. LeRoy, NY 14482 (585) 768-2400 www.falconefuneralhome.com Vern C. C L A S S I F I E D S by Greg “Porp” Rogers One of the real perks from being the mayor is the invitation to the annual fire department banquet. Once again, my wife Jody and I attended and as always, we receive a warm welcome from all. We are both always amazed at the level of dedication and volunteerism on display that night, here are some highlights; The most prestigious award the Fireman of the year went to Jeff Freeman. The chief’s accommodation award went to Jim Davis, The Uncle Joe award named after Joe Orlando for his decades of service went to Josh Pfendler. The training that goes into this department is unbelievable with 687 hours and responding to 352 calls and a total of over 1200 volunteer hours, all to make our community a safer place. Thank you all for your service. Our next monthly meeting will be Feb. 22nd at 7:00 pm at 3 W. Main St. If you come you will see the village hall is getting a new paint job and much needed face lift.
