LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - FEBRUARY 5, 2023 Le Roy Youth Basketball Submitted by Ric Vangalio BOYS 5TH GRADE GLOW BASKETBALL VS CALMUM (01/28/23): Le Roy’s 5th Grade GLOW team went on the road to play the Raiders of CalMum this week. The Knights were coming off a loss last week against Wheatland-Chili and were hoping to get back into the win column against their cross town rival. The Raiders came out swinging in the first period and got out to a big lead early. Le Roy’s Drew Spink was determined to make sure this game didn’t get out of reach. Spink was hot from all over the court throughout the first half as he led the team with 12 first half points. Wyatt Whipple, Andrew Sibley and Eli Fortuna provided the defense to keep the game within striking distance. In the second half, Spink continued his hot hand to continue to close the lead. This time he was also helped out offensively by Quinton Ianni, Mason Biggins and Lucas Miller who all put some points on the board for the Knights. In the end, the Knights rally fell short as they fell to the Raiders by a final score of 36-30. Le Roy was led in scoring by Drew Spink with 24 points. Also contributing on offense were Mason Biggins (3 points), Quinton Ianni (2 points) and Lucas Miller (1 point). Le Roy 5th Grade boys dropped to 2-2 on the season. Le Roy 5th Grade takes on Wheatland-Chili at home next week. BOYS 6TH GRADE GLOW BASKETBALL VS CALMUM (01/28/23): The Le Roy 6th Grade (Black) boys team hoped to keep their winning ways going as they squared off against Cal-Mum. The Knights came into the game at 2-0 while the Raiders came in at 2-1. The Knights figured it would be a tight game as yet again they were outsized against a tough Raider team. The first period showed just how much the size difference was going to play a part in the game as the Knights struggled stopping Caledonia’s big post presence. Whenever Le Roy needs some big time defense, it turns to Thomas Englerth. This game was no exception. Englerth along with fellow post player Harrison Porter (5 rebounds) turned up the physicality on defense in the second period, which allowed the Knights to crawl back into the game. Cal-Mum’s size in the middle of the defense forced Le Roy to have to rely a little more on outside shots. Luckily, guards Dylan Loftus and Ryker Vangalio were up to the task as both hit from the outside on multiple occasions. Le Roy’s Carter McClurg (5 steals), Cole Cray, Blake Biracree (4 steals) and Kiptyn Cone provided some great perimeter defense which shut down the passing lanes to the Raider’s low post big men. By the end of the 3rd period the Knights found themselves up by 12. Cal-Mum was not going to go down lightly as they continued to put pressure down low on the Knights defense. After 40 minutes of hard fought basketball, it was the Knights that held on for the 44-40 victory to move to 3-0 on the season. The Knights were led in scoring by Ryker Vangalio with 20 points (also 6 rebounds and 5 steals). Also contributing on offense were Dylan Loftus (16 points, 6 assists and 3 steals), Carter McClurg (2 points), Blake Biracree (2 points), Kip Cone (2 points) and Cole Cray (2 points). Le Roy faces a tough Wheatland-Chili team next week. Le Roy 6th Grade takes on Wheatland-Chili at home next week.
