LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - MARCH 27, 2022 by Lynne Belluscio With the recent announcement that LeRoy’s own Broadway star, John Bolton, is appearing as the Wizard in the national tour of “Wicked,” it was serendipitous to find this program in the collection at Le Roy House. In the Le Roy High School performance of “The Wiz” Rick Blowers played the Wizard. John Bollton played the Scarecrow. There are some other familiar names – Jill Frost played Aunt Em; Sue Matthews was Dorothy: Chris Clark played Glinda. Theresa Frederick posted on LeRoy Then and Now that she still has the t-shirt in pristine condition. The story is based on the 1900 classic book by Frank Baum, “The Wizard of Oz.” The “Wiz” was a 1978 movie, with an all-black cast, starring Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Nipsey Russell, Ted Ross, Mabel King, Lena Horne and Richard Pryor. Dorothy was a shy schoolteacher from Harlem who is transported to the urban fantasy land of Oz – which is a dream version of New York City. Quincy Jones supervised the adaptation of Charles Smalls and Luther Vandross’ songs. Wicked is a musical based on the 1995 Gregory Maguire novel “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West.” Wicked tells the story of the Wicked Witch of the West, Elphaba and Galinda (whose name is changed to Glinda.) The two witches react to the Wizard’s corrupt government and ultimately, Elphaba falls fromgrace. Wicked premiered on Broadway in 2003. Its original stars included Joel Grey as the Wizard, Idina Menzel as Elphaba, and Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda. The original Broadway production won three Tony Awards and seven Drama Desk Awards. The original cast album received a Grammy Award. Interestingly, Frank Baum, author of the original Wizard of Oz, also wrote other Oz stories, which were published by Jell-O. The four books, if in good condition can command hundreds of dollars. The Historical Society has several in their collection: Tiktok and the Nome King; Osma and the Little Wizard; Pumpkinhead and the Sawhorse; The Scarecrow and the Tinman. The books were published as part of Jell-O’s sponsorship of the short-lived Wizard of Oz radio program in 1933. The back cover of the booklet shows the Scarecrow and the Tin Woodsman carrying a plate of Jell-O and the last page includes a few Jell-O recipes. The booklets were available by sending in one Jell-O package front. The booklets were illustrated by John R Neill who succeeded W.W. Denslow as Baum’s illustrator. The recipes included “Emerald Fruit Cup” that was made with lime Jell-O. The radio show went off the air less than a year later and soon Jell-O became the sponsor for the Jack Benny show. The national tour of the international hit musical Wicked welcomes Lissa deGuzman as Elphaba, Jennifer Newberry as Glinda and LeRoy’s own John Bolton as the Wizard. Michael Genet returns to the role of Doctor Dillamond, having played the role on Broadway. Kimberly Immanuel joins the cast as Nessarose and Jake Pederson plays Boq. The show opens at the First Interstate Center For the Arts in Spokane on March 22. The closest to Le Roy that the tour will appear, is Boston or Washington, D.C. It will also play in Columbus, Ohio. The Wiz

LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - MARCH 27, 2022 Submitted by MatthewWojtaszczyk Written by Robert Stiles Photos by Mary Winseman On March 2nd, 2022, the LeRoy Youth Wrestling Club (Powered by Area 47) took home the Greater Rochester Youth Wrestling League Championship! Team LeRoy entered the Western Division with a 6-0 record, once again allowing the LeRoy team to display their athletic skills amongst the best of the Greater Rochester Youth Wrestling League (GRYWL). In dominant fashion, the team exhibited their extensive skills versus Hilton, Brockport, and Greece in three separate battles, allowing the team to advance. Their opponent in the championship semi-finals was Webster Thomas. LeRoy vs. Webster: Semi-final Bout Webster Thomas had finished their regular season with a 7-2 win versus loss and was not afraid to engage with the LeRoy Youth Wrestling Association (LYWA). Mazzy Beardsley, Ryder Stiles, and Roland Goodenough scored 18 of the teams 40 points via pin. Mazzy Beardsley had the quickest fall in this contest as she pinned her opponent in 29 seconds. Mazzy "Moo" Beardsley, weighing in at 47lbs., is a spitfire who set the tone early for the LeRoy team, pinning her opponent allowing a lead of 6-0 as LeRoy's fans were deafening in applause. Cameron Montesano exceeded expectations naturally as he was an undefeated opponent. Cam has wrestled at 70lbs. the majority of the season, regardless of his natural weight of 60lbs. With starter Jassiah "Pokey" Reed out of the line-up, Cam took over with a solid 12-0 major decision. LeRoy 10-3. Lorilye Beardsley, Easton Thomas, and Austyn Silvernail each gained decisions for the unbeaten LeRoy team. Easton Thomas, a first-year grappler, has been improving immensely thanks to Blake "Muscle Man" Fetzer's grinding style as a practice partner. Fetzer is a knowledgeable competitor and will always assist the team to ensure victory. Austyn Silvernail, a true dominant asset to the LeRoy team, fought for the takedown with 10 seconds left to secure a win against Webster Thomas’ 80 pounder 5-3. LeRoy 19-6. Nutter Stiles picked up a forfeit win that is equivalent to a pin to add 6 points and allowed LeRoy an opportunity to strategize. Ryder Stiles, fresh out of retirement, entered the championship portal as an unknown at 90lbs. The eldest of the Stiles boys was rust-free and tough on top. He entered the battle as if he was riding a bike, and throttled Webster Thomas’ 90 pounder in 1:58 seconds. That pin secured a 31-6 lead for LeRoy. Webster now had no other option but to try to pin out and dominate to win 36-31. Webster began to feel the pressure of an undefeated LeRoy team. In dire straits, Webster draws undefeated 6thgrade phenom and scrapper, David Wojo. Wojo was tested but secured a victory with a 4-0 decision advancing LeRoy to the finals against HFL, who won against the Victor dual on an opposing mat. LeRoy 346. But LeRoy still had battles and modesty to maintain against Webster Thomas. Roland Goodenough is a BULL and has limited charm when engaged in battle. Roland “BULLied” his opponent for a tub-thumping fall at 1:30. LeRoy won 40-17 over Webster Thomas in the finals. Next up… HFL. LeRoy vs. HFL: Championship Bout Mazzy “Moo” Beardsley once again set the theme of dominance for LeRoy with a 6 point fall in the third period after a continued 0-0 nonpoint return in the first two rounds. The fans were besides themselves with joy and did not hesitate to express their pride. LeRoy 6-0. HFL was now to face a tough-rugged Alaina Lauricella. Despite her grit and “never give up” style, HFL won 9-3. LeRoy 6-3. Cameron Montesano had a match clutching performance as he won over HFL's solid 60 pounder with a 4-0 win. LeRoy 9-3. In possibly the most anticipated match of the evening, Lorilye Beardsley drops a controversial 3-2 loss to her HFL opponent who she has faced several times. The match was close and entertaining for everyone. LeRoy 9-6. Jaxon “Cookie” Cook, in his 2nd attempt at 70lbs was rock solid picking up a 5-4 win over a tough, young, upcoming HFL opponent. Cook has pretty much patented his finisher, the "Cookie Coup de grace". LeRoy 12-6. Easton Thomas is easily the most improved wrestler on the roster of 100+ LeRoy youth wrestling athletes. He avenged an earlier season loss with a dominant 5-0 win. Easton "Beast-on" makes it 15-6 in favor of LeRoy. Gideon Reed drew the short straw against HFL's most decorated wrestler. Gideon was fearless, brave and showed much courage while advancing to the mat. Unfortunately, he was pinned by the multiple state placing HFL veteran. LeRoy 15-12. Austyn Silvernail, a 6th grade veteran has been on fire all year. He was happy to destroy his opponent 7-0 but does not get any much-needed bonus points, which is rare for the veteran state placer. LeRoy18-12. Nutter Stiles knew what he had to do. Nutter circled out front for a 3rd-period chin whip for the fall to put LeRoy up 2412. David Wojo was up next. He is on the Mount Rushmore of LeRoy Youth Wrestling and was too much for HFL's young 95lber. David secured a 6 point forfeit win putting. LeRoy up 30-12 with 4 bouts left. At this juncture, HFL needed to win the last 4 bouts to keep the trophy marinating in the 14472. Jace Beachamp, who is also a great contender with his own personal style, ended the drama with a : 24-second throttling pin, securing the title to LeRoy! LeRoy 36-12. Roland Goodenough played coach and suggested Brennan Weber replace him in the 110lb position where Weber gained a 15-0 technical fall. Weber has been a blessing in his first year on the squad and has made enormous strides, putting LeRoy in command 41-12. Roland then fulfilled his duty with his unique, unorthodox style pinning his HFL opponent in the second period for an additional 6 points for LeRoy. 47-12 The heavyweight "Road Dog" Benito Bautista was already celebrating with Aris Beauchamp, Deacon "Neckbone" Wojo, Annabella Wojo, and Blake Fetzer with sparkling water, Gatorade dumps and fake cigars to celebrate a forfeit to HFL. Team LeRoy wins 47-18 for its first of many anticipated future GRYWL championships! LeRoy’s success is attributed to a unified village collaborating for the greater good of developing youth wrestling. A huge thank you to Sean Valdez and D&R Depot for their amazing facility. Jonathan Lauracella (coach), Troy Ireland (coach), Zach Condidorio (coach), Christian Boley (coach), Cory Beardsley (coach), Rob Stiles (coach), Matthew Wojtaszczyk, (coach) and several parents have assisted as well in every capacity from coaching, managing concessions, and caring for one another throughout the season. It takes a village to produce motivated and dominant athletes, and we are proud to say LeRoy has an exceptional one. Congratulations to every participant. Our village could not be more proud. Well done, and thank you for a memorable 2021-2022 season. The trophy has been well earned. LeRoy Wrestling Club
