LeRoy Pennysaver & News

LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - FEBRUARY 27, 2022 by Ric Vangalio GLOW REGION - 4th GRADE BOYS BASKETBALL: The 4th Grade Le Roy Boys Knights basketball team entered the final game of the season without a loss, and were looking to finish off the perfect season against crosstown rival Cal-Mum. The Knights have been dominant this year by combining a fast paced high octane offense with a tough, physical, disciplined defense to win by an average 27 points per game this season. The main key to Le Roy’s success this year has been using their offense early in games to get out in front, then using their defense to smother any opponent’s comeback attempts. It became evident early that this game was going to be a typical page from the Knights playbook. Ryker Vangalio (7 points), Dylan Loftus (4 points), Carter McClurg (2 points) and Thomas Englerth (2 points) all provided the offense while Andrew Sibley provided the defense in the first quarter as Le Roy took an early 11-4 lead. The 2nd quarter was more of the same as Blake Biracree (2 points) and Kypton Cone (2 points) both got on the board. Le Roy went into halftime winning by a score of 198. Cal-Mum looked to get things going in the 2nd half hoping to get back into the game. The Knights were having absolutely no part of that. Harrison Porter continued to impress on both sides of the court with his offense and defense. Porter has been a force to be reckoned with on the boards all year and today was no different as he hauled in 6 rebounds for the Knights. Vangalio poured in an additional 16 second half points, while Loftus cleaned the glass enroute to his 10 rebounds on the day. When the final horn sounded, the Knights completed their perfect season by beating CaMum 47-14. The Knights finish the year 7-0 and win their 4th Grade GLOW division title. Ryker Vangalio led the Knights in scoring with 23 points and 12 rebounds to record his 4th double-double of the season. Other offensive contributors were Thomas Englerth (6 points), Dylan Loftus (6 points), Carter McClurg (6 points), Blake Biracree (2 points), Harrison Porter (2 points) and Kypton Cone (2 points). The Knights had a very impressive season, averaging 40.5 points a game while only allowing 12.7 points a game. Congratulations to the 4th Grade Knights boys team on their undefeated season. They are a great team, made up of outstanding boys that worked together in the truest sense of the word “Team” all year. The future of Le Roy Basketball is very bright and it was an honor to work with this group of boys this year. The team consisted of Blake Biracree, Krypton Cone, Thomas Englerth, Dylan Loftus, Carter McClurg, Harrison Porter, Andrew Sibley and Ryker Vangalio. The best of luck going forward boys! KTA COED BASKETBALL LEAGUE: 3rd/4th Grade League Game #1: Lakers vs Bulls The first game of the 3rd/4th Grade play-offs was a match-up of the Lakers and the Bulls. The Bulls came into this game heavy favorites as they only lost 1 game all year on their way to the #1 seed. The Lakers had not won a game all year, but hoped to make their first win of the season a big one. The start of the game had Drew Spink and the Lakers dreaming of a Cinderella type ending as they finished the first quarter tied 2-2. Spink went on to score 6 points in the 1st half for the Lakers. Carter McClurg quickly reminded them that midnight was close by for this Cinderella story, as he scored 8 first half points to pull away from the Knicks. Dylan Loftus and Brody Wilson also added 2 points in the quarter as the Bulls went on to lead the Lakers 12-6 at the half. Down by 6 points, the Lakers knew they needed to get things going in the 2nd half or their season was over. But the Bulls defense led by Brianna Porcelli, Dominic DeJesus and Jaiden Biletskiy was not going to let that happen. The Lakers were held to 1 second half point, while Harrison Porter and Farrah Fox provided the offense to propel the Bulls onto the victory and reserved a spot in next week’s Championship game. The Bulls were led by Carter McClurg with 12 points. Other offensive contributors were Harrison Porter (4 points), Brody Wilson (4 points), Dylan Loftus (2 points) and Farrah Fox (2 points). The Lakers were led by Drew Spink with 6 points. Other offensive Contributors were Stone Husted (1 point). Game #2: Celtics vs Knicks With the results of the first game in the books the Celtics and Knicks faced off to see who was going to play the #1 seed Bulls in the Championship game. These two teams played twice this year with each team coming away with a victory, so this game was definitely up for grabs. Ben Biracree got the scoring started off by hitting the front half of his foul shots to give the Knicks an early lead. The Celtics defense was not about to make that a common occurrence, as that would end being the only point they gave up in the quarter. Preston Heschke, Connor Hanley and Fiona Privitera played shutdown defense while Owen Nichols, Kypton Cone and Paul Winters provided the offense for the Celtics in the first half. The Celtics went into halftime with a 16-3 lead. In the 2nd half the Knicks knew they would have to rely on the defense of Blake Biracree, Jayda Cosimeno, Blake Fetzer, Quinton Ianni and Wyatt Whipple in order to stay in the game. That, along with the offense of Thomas Englerth and Jackon Hubbard would hopefully be enough to get back into the game. The Celtics have been known for being one of the deepest teams in the league and that depth proved to be too much for the Knicks as Ryker Vangalio and Cole Cray combined for 12 points in the 2nd half. In a hard fought game by both teams it was the Celtics that came away with the 28-7 victory to book their appointment with the Bulls in next week's Championship game. Ryker Vangalio led the Celtics in scoring with 10 points. Other offensive contributors were Cole Cray (8 points), Owen Nichols (2 points), Kypton Cone(2 points) and Paul Winters (2 points). Ben Biracree led the Lakers with 3 points. Other offensive contributors were Thomas Englerth (2 points), and Jackson Hubbard (2 points).. 1st/2nd Grade League Game #1: Raptors vs Blazers The first game of the 1st/2nd Grade playoffs was a contest between the #1 seed Raptors and the #4 seed Blazers. The Blazers played the Raptors tough in the last week of the season and were hoping that momentum would carry over to the playoff game. The Raptors are known for their hot shooting by guards Anthony Hamilton and Keegan Bramer and were hoping that would be enough to carry them into the Championship game. Neither disappointed as they combined for a total of 29 points in this game. The Blazers don’t have a true scoring leader, but tend to rely on a spread out offensive approach. Today, it was Tarick Vangalio, Raelyn Cosimeno and Trenton Alford’s turn to provide the offense. Diesel Jones and Allie Loftus provided the defense for the Blazers, but they knew they had their work cut out for them today. The Raptors got out to a fast start and never really looked back. On top of the Raptors usual scoring leaders, Jordan Hamilton, Donovan Jones and Jameson Wyant also provided some additional offense. In the end it was too much for the Blazers as the Raptors walked away with a dominant 28-7 victory and move on to next week’s Championship game. The Raptors were led by Anthony Hamilton with 15 points. Other offensive contributors were Keegan Bramer (12 points), Jameson Wyant (6 points), Jordan Hamilton (2 points) and Donovan Jones (2 points). The Blazers were led by both Trenton Alford and Tarick Vangalio with 6 points each. Other offensive contributors were Raelyn Cosimeno (4 points). Game #2: Warriors vs Rockets With only one spot left in the KTA Basketball Championship game left, the Rockets and the Warriors knew they had to bring their A game. These two teams played two tight games against each other in the regular season, so there was no reason to think this would be any different. The first quarter played out just as everyone thought it would, with only a 2 point difference between the two teams as the Warriors took a 4-6 lead. The 2nd quarter was all about defense, as both teams only registered 2 points a piece. The Warriors went into halftime with a 8-6 lead. Going into the start of the 3rd quarter it was still anyone’s game. The Warriors were determined to change that as they put up 10 points in the period to take an 18-11 lead going into the 4th and final quarter. Knowing they were 10 minutes away from their Championship hopes being dashed, the Rockets made one final push. At one point they found themselves down by only 3 points with 3 minutes to go in the game. But in the end it was not enough as the Warriors came away with the 24-19 victory. The Warriors move on to face off against the Raptors in next weekend’s Championship game. No individual scores were reported. Le Roy Youth Basketball
