Trish Riggi, at the Library, in conjunction with the LeRoy Historical Society, is preparing a couple of quizzes that kids and adults can try. There is a trivia form that has to be filled out at the library. The patron with the most number of correct answers wins a prize. Visit the Woodward Library web site for more information. Trish and I talked about LeRoy and connections to both Lincoln andWashington, and of course, one thing that came to mind was that LeRoy has streets named after both presidents and they are located in “Presidential Acres.” Then I looked at possible topics for this Pennysaver article, and I’m overwhelmed at how complicated it has been to establish a “President’s” or is it “Presidents’ Day. Here is a chronological list of events that led up to why we celebrate George Washington’s birthday on February 22. 1732 – February 11, George Washington was born in Westmoreland County, Virginia. (Yes, you read the date right. He was born on February 11.) In 1732, people were using the Julian calendar which traces its origins to the Roman leader, Julius Caesar. (After George was born, people switched to the Gregorian calendar.) 1752 – March, The European colonies of the Americas adopted the calendar change when their mother countries did. New France and New Spain had adopted the new calendar in 1582. The Gregorian calendar was applied in the British colonies in Canada and the future United States east of the Appalachian Mountains in 1752. (However, Alaska remained on the Julian calendar along with the rest of Russia until 1867, when it was sold to the United States. At noon on Saturday, 7 October 1867 (Julian), the date changed to Friday, 18 October 1867 (Gregorian). Although the Julian calendar was 12 days behind the Gregorian calendar, only 11 days were skipped because Alaska also moved from the European side of the International Date Line to the American side. (Hope you’re taking notes!) And then we need to discuss “leap year.” (This is an important fact to understand why George’s birthday went from February 11 to February 22.) Every four years, we have a leap year, when there is one more day in February, and one more day in the year. Adding an extra day every four years keeps our calendar aligned correctly with the astronomical seasons. (When George was born, they didn’t have leap year. And they certainly didn’t have daylight’s savings.) Adding an extra day every four years keeps our calendar aligned correctly with the astronomical seasons, since it takes 365.25 according to Earth’s orbit around the Sun (approximately 365.25 days) are not the exact same length of time. Without this extra day, our calendar and the seasons would gradually get out of sync. (Anyone know of someone, who’s birthday is February 29? Instead of being 40, they are 10.) How do you know it’s a leap year? All leap years are divisible by 4 - - well almost. The next leap year will be 2024. The last one was 2020. At some point, it was thought that instead of celebrating Washington’s birthday, it would be appropriate to celebrate March 4 – the date of the first inauguration. That never happened. 1879 – Congress decided it was time to designate February 22 a holiday for government offices in Washington, D.C. 1885 – Congress declared February 22 a holiday for all government workers, not just those in Washington DC 1951 – First attempt to create a “President’s Day” when a Commission was formed by Harold Stonebridge Fischer of Compton, California. 1968 - Congress decided Americans needed more three-day weekends. They issued the “Uniform Monday HolidayAct”, which officially moved George Washington's birthday to the third Monday in February. Funny note - - Washington’s birthday will never be celebrated on February 22. The holiday can only ever fall between Feb 15 and Feb 21. No fooling. 1971 – February 21 – President Nixon issued a proclamation declaring the first three-day weekend be renamed Presidents’ Day, and moved it to set aside to honor all presidents, “ - - even myself.” (Not all states celebrate Presidents Day, because they prefer not to celebrate Lincoln’s birthday, because of his support of the Civil War.) Punctuation – Both the Chicago Manual of Style and MerriamWebster recommend using an apostrophe after the s. “The apostrophe belongs at the end of the ascriptive noun.” Alas, Congress didn’t check with the Chicago Manual of style or Merriam Webster, so legally, according to Congress, it has to be “President’s Day.” If you live in LeRoy, you know the other part of the George Washington story: What flavor of Jell-O did George Washington like? Cherry of course! His portrait is on the cover of the 1924 recipe book. We all know the story about George never telling a lie, and the cherry tree. The real problem with George and Jell-O, is that Jell-O wasn’t invented until 1897. George died December 14, 1799. Martha Washington did write down some recipes and she did include some recipes for cherries, although I have to be honest, I’m not sure there were any for cherry gelatin. And if there was a recipe for cherry gelatin, she would have had to start from scratch with grated isinglass (sturgeon bladders) or boiled calf’s feet. Hmmm. LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - FEBRUARY 6, 2022 Le Roy Youth Basketball by Ric Vangalio GLOW REGION- 4th GRADE BOYS BASKETBALL: The 4th Grade boys Le Roy Knights were looking to keep their undefeated season going while facing off against the Golden Knights of York this week. Things would be a little different as they were playing without key players Andrew Sibley and Kypton Cone. The Knights have been known for their upbeat run and gun style offense this year, and this game was no exception. The Knights “Big Three” of Ryker Vangalio, Dylan Loftus and Carter McClurg continued their hot play this year. Vangalio led an impressive offensive attack in the 1st quarter as he pumped in 12 of the Knights’ 18 points in the opening period. Loftus provided great opportunities for the Knights players as his pinpoint passing opened up open shots all game. Loftus also added 2 points in the quarter, while McClurg added 4 points of his own to open a commanding 18-2 lead to end the first period. The 2nd quarter was much slower as York's offense tried to slow things down. Keeping the ball out by the perimeter the majority of the 2nd quarter they were able to hold the Knight’s to just 2 points in the period, but Le Roy still went into the half with a 20-6 lead. The Knights were determined to get back to their high flying ways in the 2nd half. And they did just that. With a well balanced attack on offense the Knights came out and outscored York 19-2 in the 3rd quarter. After 3 quarters Le Roy held a 39-8 lead. There would be no looking back. The 4th quarter brought much of the same as Thomas Englerth pumped in 6 points in the final quarter. Harrison Porter had a put back to get on the board and Blake Biracree rounded out the scoring to put a cherry on top as every Knights player ended up in the scoring column for a complete team effort. In the battle of the Knights, the Oatkan Knights reigned supreme this week as Le Roy won the game by a final score of 53-16. Ryker Vangalio led the team in scoring with 18 points. Other offensive contributors were Dylan Loftus (13 points), Carter McClurg (12 points), Thomas Englerth (6 points), Harrison Porter (2 points) and Blake Biracree (2 points). KTA COED BASKETBALL LEAGUE: 3rd/4th Grade League Game #1: Bulls vs Knicks This week’s opening game was a rematch of the Bulls vs the Knicks. These two teams faced off in week 1, with the Bulls coming out on top. The Knicks were coming off their buzzer beating thriller win last week and were looking to keep the winning ways going. But it wasn't going to be easy for the Knicks. The 2-1 Bulls were back to full strength as Dylan Loftus, in his bid for comeback player of the year, was back in the lineup. The first quarter harkened back to the days of James Naismith, as both teams combined for 4 points to finish the 1st period in a 2-2 tie. In the 2nd quarter, the Bulls offense finally started coming alive. The extra offense combined with the rebounding of Harrison Porter allowed them to take a 7-4 lead going into halftime. This game ended being a battle of the defenses as neither team was willing to give anything to the opposing offenses. In the end it was the Bulls that hung on with a 15-10 lead to move to 3-1 on the season as they finished the regular season sweep of the Knicks. The Knicks fell to 2-2 on the year with the loss. Dylan Loftus led the Bulls in scoring with 8 points. Other offensive contributors were Carter McClurg (5 points), and Harrison Porter (2 points) The Knicks were led by Blake Biracree with 8 points. Other offensive contributors were Ben Biracree (2 points) Game #2: Lakers vs Celtics The second game of the night gave us a rematch of the 2-1 Celtics and the 0-3 Lakers. The Celtics are coming off a crushing defeat at the hands of the Knicks. Some would say it was due to the buzzer beating 3 pointer by the Knicks. Others would say it was due to Interim Coach Bryan “One And Done” Winters and Jon “Part-time” Privitera. Either way, the Celtics were again looking to get back into the win column. The Lakers have played hard all year, but it just hasn't equated to wins early on this season. The Lakers’ Drew Spink was determined to finally get his team in the win column. Spink summoned his inner “Steph Curry” as he “made it rain” from all over the court in the first quarter. Unfortunately, for every basket by the Lakers, the Celtics kept answering as they took a 14-6 lead after the end of the 1st period. The 2nd quarter was all about the defense as Stone Husted and Isaac Morrison combined for 6 rebounds for the Lakers and Fiona Privitera provided some great defense for the Celtics. The Celtics took a 19-8 lead going into the half. The Lakers were not about to give up in the 2nd half though, as Eden Bailey was relentless on the offensive boards and found the bottom of the net for 2 points to keep her team in the game. In the end the Celtics were just too deep on offense as Paul Winters, Cole Cray, Owen Nichols and Connar Hanley all scored in a complete team effort. Ryker Vangalio who missed the last game due to a contract dispute finished the game with a doubledouble by recording 19 points while adding 10 rebounds. The Celtics

Other offensive contributors were Paul Winters (8 points), Owen Nichols (4 points), Cole Cray (2 points) and Connar Hanley (2 points). Fiona Privitera provided excellent defense for the team. Drew Spink led the Lakers with 10 points. Other offensive contributors were Eden Bailey with 2 points. Defensive Standouts for the Lakers included Graham Pawlak, Addy Stella and Christopher Ianita. 1st/2nd Grade League Game #1: Raptors vs Blazers The first game of the 1st/2nd Grade league was a matchup of the undefeated Raptors (2-0) and the Blazers (1-1) who are coming off a big win last week. The Raptors have been a force to be reckoned with this year led by Rookie head coach John Marinaccio and league leading scorer Anthony Hamilton. The combination of the Hamiton brothers and the deep bench of the Raptors proved to be too much for the Blazers as the Raptors moved to 3-0 on the season with a 26-12 victory. Hamilton led the Raptors with 12 points. Other offensive contributors were Jameson Wyant (6 points), Jordan Hamilton (4 points), Keegan Bramer (2 points) and Everitt Torrey (2 points). Raelyn Cosimeno led the Blazers with 6 points. Other offensive contributors were Allie Loftus (4 points) and Trenton (2 points). The Raptors move to 3-0, while the Blazers fall to 1-2. Game #2: Warriors vs Blazers The last game of the day gave us a showdown of the Rockets vs the Raptors. If we strictly went on win/ loss records, this game wouldn't have to be played. The Raptors looked to continue their undefeated season as the Rockets were looking to get their first win of the season. But that’s why things are settled on the court. In the beginning it looked like the Rockets would walk away with the game, as they started out with a 6-0 lead. Alex Tomidy had other plans though, as he hit a 3 pointer to provide the spark for the Rockets offense. From that point on it was a dog fight as both teams went back and forth the entire game. Payson Keller got hot for the Rockets as he chipped in 8 points and Ameaus Largeroy got in on the action as well by hitting on 2 baskets of his own. Austin Branton hit 1 of 2 from the foul line to add to the Rockets team total. The Raptors lean heavily on team leader Anthony Hamilton and he was not about to let the perfect season go today. Hamilton scored a team leading 8 points to go along with multiple rebounds and steals. Jameson Wyant did his part by hitting on 3 shots for 6 points as well. Everitt Torrey was a key member in the win as he continued to come up with offensive rebounds to give the Raptors multiple scoring opportunities. Opportunities that teammates like Kegan Bramer, who scored 4 points, were able to capitalize on. After a very tight game from start to finish, it was the Raptors that came away with a tight 18-16 victory. The Raptors were led byAnthony Hamilton with 8 points. Other offensive contributors were Jameson Wyant (6 points) and Keegan Bramer (4 points). Defensive standouts were Everitt Torrey, Jordan Hamilton, Donavon Jones and Giano Marinaccio. The Rockets were led by Payson Keller with 8 points. Other offensive contributors were Ameaus Largeroy (4 points), Alex Tomidy (3 points) and Austin Branton (1 point). Defensive standouts were Xander Parker and Laela Robinson.
