LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - JANUARY 23, 2022 Le Roy Youth Basketball by Ric Vangalio GLOW REGION- 4th GRADE BOYS BASKETBALL: The 4th Grade boys LeRoy Knights faced the Pavilion Gophers in their second game of the season. Last game the Knights high powered offense put up 38 points against Livonia. Today, they were out to prove that last week was no fluke. After some confusion on defense led to a quick basket by Pavilion to start the game, the Knight got back on track. Ryker Vangalio got the Knights offense started with a nice drive in the lane for a wide open lay-up, and that would be the last time they trailed in this game. Carter McClurg and Dylan Loftus chipped in with some baskets as well, as the hot handed Knights hit on over 60% of their shots in the first quarter to end the period with a 19-3 lead. The offense slowed a little in the 2nd quarter but the defense definitely didn’t slack off as the Knights held a 25-5 lead to end the half. The Knights offense got back on track in the 3rd quarter, as they outscored the Gophers 16-2 in the period. Harrison Porter was a force to be reckoned with on the boards as he hauled in 7 rebounds for the game. Andrew Sibley and Kypton Cone added 6 rebounds a piece as LeRoy dominated on both sides of the court. Blake Biracree got in on the action as well, scoring 4 of his 6 points in the 2nd half to go along with 4 steals on defense. In the end, the Knights offense proved to be too much for Pavilion as the Knights finished the game with a 54-18 victory to move to 2-0 on the season. Ryker Vangalio finished the game with his second double- double in as many games while only missing a triple-double by 2 steals. Both teams sport a combination of a high powered offense and a solid defense. The beginning of the game was back and forth as the Celtics “Big Three” of Ryker Vangalio, Paul Winters and Cole Cray battled the Bulls Dynamic Duo of Dylan Loftus and Carter McClurg. In a game that was known to showcase the offenses of both teams, defense had to step up and make the difference. Owen Nichols and Connar Hanley provided that defense for the Celtics, while Brody Wilson, Dominic DeJesus, Farrah Fox, Olivia Page and Jayden Biletskiy provided the defense for the Bulls. After a tight first half that ended with a 15-9 Celtics lead, the Celtics then pulled away in the 2nd half. Both teams looked to get into the win column this week. The Blazers started off fast with the hot shooting of Trenton Alford who led the team with 10 points. Game #2: Warriors vs Raptors Last game of the day gave us two teams that won their season opener. Neither team wanted to get their first loss and it showed. From the very start it was obvious this was going to be a battle from finish to end. Both teams traded blows like two heavyweight fighters, seeing who would be the last one standing. The Warriors and Raptors have very different styles. The Warriors used the size and brute strength of Brayden Johnson down low as he dominated the boards on his way to 14 points. While the Raptors lean on the smooth ball handling and lights out shooting of the fleet footed Anthony Hamilton. Both players led their respective teams with 14 points each. But in the end it came down to which player could have a bigger supporting cast. The Warriors (playing with only 5 players) had help on offense from Ella Murrow and Jayce Miller. While the Raptors had a much deeper team and got some help from Jameson Wyant, Parker Page and Keegan Bramer. In the end, the deep bench of the Raptors gave them the 21-17 victory to move to 2-0. The Warriors dropped to 1-1 on the season. Anthony Hamilton led the Raptors with 14 points.
