LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - JANUARY 16, 2022 Le Roy Youth Basketball by Ric Vangalio GLOW REGION- 4th GRADE BOYS BASKETBALL: The Le Roy Knights kicked off the 2022 basketball season with a home opener against the Livonia Bulldogs. The Knights got off to a quick start with a nice assist from Dylan Loftus to Blake Biracree for a nice short range jump shot to open up the scoring. The Knights never looked back from that point. Le Roy took a commanding 23-5 lead at the end of the first half. Loftus’s smooth ball handling and pin point passes opened up easy shots all game for the Knights. Carter McClurg, who was a perfect 2-2 from the foul line, also had 5 steals on defense to help support a great defensive effort for Le Roy. Harrison Porter, who hit on 1 of 2 from the foul line, was crashing the boards on offense all game to give Le Roy multiple scoring opportunities every time down the court. Thomas Enlgerth did his share of cleaning the glass on the defensive side of the court with 4 rebounds, while also adding 3 steals. Le Roy played a complete game by combining some impressive offense to go along with a stifling defense led by Blake Biracree (4 rebounds and 2 steals) and Kypton Cone. Andrew Sibley also chipped in on defense, to give the 4th Grade Knights a 37-10 victory to open up the season and start off 1-0. Ryker Vangalio managed a double-double with 26 points and 10 rebounds (7 offensive) to lead the Knights in both categories, while other offensive contributors were Dylan Loftus (4 points), Carter McClurg (4 points), Blake Biracree ( 2 points) and Harrison Porter (1 point). Le Roy (1-0) next faces off against the Pavilion Gophers next Saturday, Jan 15th again at home. KTA CO-ED BASKETBALL LEAGUE: After missing a year due to Covid-19, The 2022 KTA Basketball League started up again this weekend. This year there are two league age groups, a 1st/2nd Grade League and a 3rd/4th Grade League. The League year started off with the 3/4th Graders taking the court first. 3rd/4th Grade League Game #1: Celtics vs Lakers The opening game was a rematch of the last league’s Championship game between the Celtics vs the Lakers. This year, however, gives us completely new rosters and some new coaches between the teams. The Celtics have a much more experienced roster overall and it showed in this matchup. The Celtics got off to a hot start and never really looked back. Ryker Vangalio led the Celtics in scoring with 23 points, while other offensive contributors were Cole Cray (8 points), Paul Winters (8 points) and Fiona Privitera (2 points). Connor Hanley and Kypton Cone provided shut down defense for the Celtics as well. The Lakers were led by the hot shooting hand of Drew Spink who had 12 points. Great games were also played by Stone Husted, Aiden Weise, Isaac Morrison, Darby Ferell, Graham Pawlak, Christopher Ianita and Adalyn Stella. The Celtics (1-0) face off against the Bulls next week, while the Lakers (0-1) play the Knicks. Game #2: Bulls vs Knicks The Bulls faced the Knicks in the 2nd game, with both teams looking to start off the season with a win. The game started off very close at first as both defenses held tight and scoring was at a premium. The Bulls defense was led by Brianna Porcelli who had 3 steals and 5 rebounds, Harrison Porter with 3 rebounds and 2 steals and Jackson Hubbard with 2 rebounds of his own. Alivia Page provided great defense for the Bulls as well. It was the Bulls offense that finally started warming up first as Dylan Loftus and Carter McClurg worked together to lead the Bulls in scoring at 13 points each, each hitting a 3-Pointer from beyond the arc. Blake Biracree hit a 3 from downtown as well on his way to a Knicks leading 6 points. Leading the Knicks on defense was Thomas Englerth with 5 rebounds, and Quinton Ianni with 2 rebounds of his own. Blake Fetzer was a force down low for the Knicks. Arabella Morsch and Jayda Cosimeno provided some quality minutes for the Knicks as well. The game ended with a Bulls 26-6 win. The Bulls face the Celtics next week and the Knicks square off against the Lakers. 1st/2nd Grade League Game #1: Blazers vs Warriors The 1st/2nd Grade league kicked the new season off with the Warriors squaring off against the Blazers. This game started off looking like it would go down to the wire, and it did not disappoint. Right when it looked like the Warriors were going to pull away, the Blazers would put together a run and make it a tight game again. The game would go back and forth for the whole game, but it was the Warriors that would finally hold onto a close 32-28 victory. Jayce Miller led not only the Warriors but all scorers with 16 points. Other offensive contributors for the Warriors were Joseph Oliver (6 points), Ella Morrow (6 points) and Olivia Vogt (4 points). The Blazers were led by Trenton Alford with 14 points. Other offensive contributors were Allie Loftus (12 points) and Diesel Jones (2 points). Aaron Bailey, Raelyn Cosimeno, Gracie and Cody Holler also contributed on defense for the Blazers. The Warriors (1-0) face the Raptors next week while the Blazers (0-1) face the Rockets. Game #2: Rockets vs Raptors Last game of the season was a showdown between the Raptors and the Rockets. Both of these teams were eager to start the season off on the right note. Anthony Hamilton was going to do everything he could do to make sure his team was the one that came out on top. Hamilton combined aggressive defense to go along with smooth ball handling to not only lead the Raptors, but also both teams in scoring with 16 points. It was a tough fought game by both teams but in the end it was the Raptors that would come away with a 23-15 win over the Rockets. Hamilton lead the Raptors with 16, but other offensive contributors were Jameson Wyant (4 points), Giano Marinaccio (2 points) and Keegan Bramer (1 point). Defensive standouts for the Raptors included Donavon Jones, Everitt Torrey, Jordan Hamilton and Parker Page. The Rockets gave it their all and played great. Payson Keller led the Rockets with 8 points. Other offensive contributors were Alex Tomidy (4 points), Laela Robinson (2 points) and Austin Branton (1 point). Defensive standouts for the Rockets include Ameaus Largeroy and Xander Parker. The Raptors (1-0) face off against the Warriors in week 2, while the Rockets play the Blazers.
