LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - AUGUST 16, 2020 Red Sox 12, Orioles 8 The visiting Red Sox took on the Orioles on Wednesday August 5 after their Tuesday night matchup was rained out. Jojo Vernacini started on the mound for the Sox while Grady Gilligan got the start for the O’s. The Red Sox got an early start scoring 5 runs in the first from hits by Isaac Stella, Cole Tonzi, Evan Rose, and Joey Vernacini. The O’s were held scoreless through the 3rd from dominate pitching from Vernacini. The Red Sox picked up 2 more in the 2nd, and 3 in the 3rd from a huge Joey Vernacini home run, his first of the year. They then added 1 in the 4th. The O’s got on the board in the 4th scoring 1. The O’s shut the Sox down in the 5th then mounted a come back, scoring 5 runs with key hits from Brady McClurg, Cam Wilson, Simon Greene, Deacon Queal, and Mia Strollo. The Sox tacked on 1 more in the sixth and the O’s picked up 2 more in their half with McClurg picking up and inside the park HR. Red Sox 12 O’s 8. Leading the Sox were Joey Vernacini going 5 for 5 and hitting for the cycle. Stella 3 for 5 with 3 doubles, Tonzi 3 for 5, Evan rose 3 for 5, Evan McCallister 4 for 4 and Colton Halliday with his first little league hit!! Leading the Orioles were Brady McClurg 3 for 4, Cam Wilson and Simon Greene each with 2 hits, and Grady Gilligan, Deacon Queal, and Mia Strollo each with a hit. For the Red Sox Vernacini went 5 2/3 dominate innings allowing 2 hits and striking out 10. Evan rose would come in to close the game pitching phenomenal. Gilligan, Cam Wilson and Simon Greene would combine to do the pitching for the O’s. Tigers 12, Indians 2 The 4-1 Tigers hosted the 3-2 Indians in their first match up of the season. The winner would find themselves in sole possession of first place. Little League veterans and neighbors Jace Jedrewski and Alex Spezzano were on the mound for their respective teams. After a scoreless top of the first inning, the Tigers would get on the scoreboard first with the first three batters recording hits. Alex Spezzano led off a double and scored on Jack Currin’s RBI single. Currin would score on a RBI ground out by Jude Christ after a single by Peter Clark. Tigers 2, Indians 0 After a scoreless second inning, the Tigers would pounce again in the bottom of the third inning. A one out double by Jack Currin and hit by pitch that put Peter Clark on base set up Jude Christ with 2 on and 1 out. Christ blistered a ball to right field that cleared the bases and put him on third base with a triple. On the next pitch Carter Page doubled, scoring Christ, for a RBI of his own. Tigers 5, Indians 0 The Indians got on the board in the 4th. Jagger Smith drew a leadoff walked. Jagger stole second. then on his attempt to steal his second straight bag, the Tigers attempt to throw him out got past the third basemen and Smith scooted home to make the score Tigers 5, Indians 1. The Tigers responded by opening the game up in the 4th scoring six more runs on 7 hits. Andreas Condidorio led off with a single. Alex Spezzano doubled for the second time in the game followed by a single by Jack Currin. Peter Clark tripled, Liam Grayson singled, Carter Page doubled (second of the game) and Andreas Condidorio recorded his second hit in the same inning. Tigers 11, Indians 1 In the bottom of the 5th inning, Alex Spezzano added his name to the Little League home run history book with his first career home run. With the count full at 3 balls and 2 strikes, Spezzano blasted a shot over the center field wall. Tigers 12, Indians 1. The Indians would score the final run of the game in the top of 6th inning. Tommy Clifford scored after a leadoff walk when Jagger Smith hit him in to earn a RBI. Final Score – Tigers 12, Indians 2 Alex Spezzano earned the win with a complete game, 15 strikeout performance while allowing 1 hit and 3 walks. Jace Jedrewski, Hayven Cordes, Jeremiah Sheehan and Peyton Privitera combined to handle the pitching duties for the Indians. Offensively for the Tigers, Alex Spezzano had 3 hits including 2 doubles and a HR to go with 3 runs scored and 1 RBI. Jack Currin had 3 hits, 3 runs scored and 2 RBI. Peter Clark singled, tripled, scored twice and had 1 RBI. Liam Grayson singled twice, scored and had a RBI. Jude Christ singled, tripled, walked, scored and had 2 RBI. Carter Page recorded 2 RBI on 2 doubles and a run scored. Andreas Condidorio singled twice, scored and had a RBI. TJ Crissy singled. For the Indians, Jagger Smith singled, walked and scored. Tommy Clifford walked and scored. Peyton Privitera walked. Indians 12, Twins 6 The Indians and Twins met for the second time this season on August 7th with Noah Kaczanowski getting the starting nod for the Twins and Jace Jedrewski on the mound for Twins. The visiting Twins would come out of the gates hot in this one scoring 2 runs in the top of the 1st inning after Brayden Chase led off the game with a double and came around to score on a double by Matt McCulley. McCulley would then score on another double by Noah Kaczanowski. However, the Indians would answer in the bottom of the first after Tommy Clifford singled and Jagger Smith laced a triple scoring Clifford. Jace Jedrewski would then reach on an error scoring Smith and Hayven Cordes would hit a double scoring Jedrewski giving the Indians a 3-2 lead after the first inning. In the second inning, the Indians would add to their lead after Tommy Clifford walked and Jagger Smith singled him in making the score 4-2 after two. The Twins would answer back in the third inning when Brayden Chase again led off with a double and Avante Walker singled. Andreas Condidorio then had the big blast knocking a double that scored Chase and Walker knotting the game at 4. However, in the bottom of the third the Indians would tack on two more runs after Hayven Cordes doubled and Jeremiah Sheehan walked, both of who scored on passed balls giving the Indians a 6-4 lead after 3. The seesaw affair would continue in the 4th inning after Domanic Dieter walked and came around to score on Brayden Chase’s 3rd double of the game. Chase himself would then score on Matthew McCulley’s second double of the game again evening up the game 6-6. In the home half of the 4th, the Indians would regain the lead after Ryan O’Geen was hit by a pitch, Tommy Clifford singled and a walk to Jace Jedrewski would load the bases for Hayven Cordes who would hit a double that scored O’Geen and Clifford. Jewdrewski would then score on a passed ball and Cordes would score on a sacrifice fly by Jack Clifford giving the Indians a 10-6 lead after 4. The Indians would tack on 2 more runs in the 5th after Tommy Clifford and Jagger Smith both singled and both eventually got pushed in by walks and the score would end 12-6 as the Twins would be unable to generate any offense the rest of the way. For the Indians, Jace Jewdreski pitched 4 2/3 innings, striking out 10. Peyton Privitera had one strikeout in 1/3 of an inning and Jagger Smith had 3 K’s in one inning pitched. Offensively, Hayven Cordes led the Indians with 3 doubles and 4 RBI’s. Jagger Smith added 3 hits, including a triple with 2 RBI’s. Tommy Clifford also had 3 hits and 4 runs scored. Jace Jedrewski also reached base 3 times (single, 2 BB’s). For the Twins, Noah Kaczanowski (5 K’s) and Matt McCulley handled the pitching duties. At the plate, Brayden Chase led the Twins with 3 doubles and 3 runs scored. Matt McCulley had 2 doubles and 2 RBI’s while Noah Kaczanowski, Avante Walker, Andreas Condidorio (2RBI’s) and LeRoy Little League Week 3
