LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - AUGUST 9, 2020 Red Sox 7, Orioles 6 The Red Sox and O’s met for the first time for the Monday night game. Isaac Stella got the start on the bump for the Sox and Brady McClurg started for the home O’s. The Sox scored 2 in the first with hits by Cole Tonzi, Joey Reschke, and Joey Vernacini. Neither team would score again until the 3rd when the Sox tacked on one more run from an Evan Rose rbi double. The Orioles scored 3 in their half of the 3rd from key hits by Cam Maxwell, Brady McClurg, Simon Greene, and Deacon Queal. The Sox scored 1 more in the 5 th and 3 in the 6th. The O’s would mount an attack in the bottom of the 6th but fall just short. Leading the way for the Red Sox were Joey Vernacini going 3 for 4 with 3 doubles, Cole Tonzi 3for 4, Reschke with a single, and Evan Rose with a double. Leading the way for the O’s were CamMaxwell 3 for 4, Brady McClurg 3 for 4, Simon Greene 2 for 4, Mia Strollo and Deacon Queal each added a hit. Stella would go 4 1/3 with 8 strikeouts with Tonzi coming in to close the game out. For the O’s McClurg threw 3 2/3 striking out 7 and CamWilson would come in to finish the game. Tigers 4, Yankees 1 The Yankees and Tigers squared off for the second time in four days withAlex Spezzano and Cam Riggi on the bump for the Tigers and Yankees respectively. Both starting pitchers were dialed in early combining for 11 strike outs in the first two innings. Drew Beachel recorded the only hit for either team, a single, through the first two frames. The Yankees threatened to break the scoreless tie in the top of the 3rd with a leadoff single by Donovan Gaillard. Gaillard would advance to 3rd base on a ground out by Colin Greene and a stolen base. Alex Spezzano would work out of his first jam by striking out the next batter with Gaillard stuck at 3rd base. In the bottom of 3rd inning Alex Spezzano doubled to lead off. After advancing to 3rd on a passed ball, Spezzano scored the first run of the game on a RBI ground out by Peter Clark. Tigers 1, Yankees 0 The Yanks half of the 4th inning began with a leadoff walk by Anthony Warner. He would make it as far as 3rd base when Drew Beachel earned his second hit of the day off Spezzano. However, Spezzano would again end the threat with 2 on and 2 out, striking out the Yankee batter. The Tigers added two more runs in the bottom of the 4th. A leadoff walk by TJ Crissy, ground out by Carter Page, single by Andreas Condidorio and Hit By Pitch by Nick Porcelli set up bases loaded with two outs. On the first pitch of his at bat, Alex Spezzano blooped one into right center that was almost caught after a great effort by the Yankees right fielder. Two runs would score making it Tigers 3, Yankees 0 heading into the 5th inning. In the top of the 5th the Yanks would finally get on the score board. Nate Pangrazio drew a one out walk and moved to 3rd base after a single by Colin Greene and walk by Connor Elmore. Pangrazio crossed home plate on a RBI ground out by Anthony Warner. In the bottom half of the 5th the Tigers stretched the lead back to 3 runs when Peter Clark doubled and was driven in on a RBI hit by Liam Grayson. The final score would be Tigers 4, Yankees 1 after the Yanks failed to mount a rally in the 6th On the mound for Tigers, Alex Spezzano worked 4 1/3 scoreless innings while striking out 12 and allowing three hits. Liam Grayson relieved Spezzano and worked out of a base loaded jam in the 4th ultimately preserving the Tigers lead and win. Grayson pitched 1 2/3 innings for the Tigers. Both Cameron Riggi and Connor Elmore pitched well for the Yanks. Riggi worked 3 1/3 innings, struck out 6 while only allowing 2 hits. In relief, Connor Elmore pitched 1 2/3 innings with 3 strike outs. Offensively for the Tigers, Alex Spezzano went 2-3 with 2 RBI’s and a run scored. Peter Clark had a double, RBI and run scored. Liam Grayson walked twice and had a RBI. Carter Page singled and scored. Andreas Condidorio had a single and scored. TJ Crissy walked and Jack Currin and Nick Porcelli reached after being hit by pitches. Offensively for the Yanks, Drew Beachel was responsible for 2 of the Yankee’s 5 hits. Colin Greene, Aidan Weaver and Donovan Gaillard all singled. Connor Elmore, Nate Pangrazio and Anthony Warner walked with Pangrazio scoring the Yankees lone run. Red Sox 7, Twins 3 On July 29th the Twins and Red Sox faced off for their second matchup of the year. Noah Kaz would start on the mound for the away Twins and Joey Vernacini for the home Sox. The Twins scored 1 in the first as did the Sox. Neither team would score again until the third when the Twins added 2 more and the Sox added 3. The Red Sox scored 3 more in the 5th to end it 7-3 Leading the way for the Red Sox was Joey Vernacini with a 2b and a single. Cole Tonzi, Isaac Stella, and Evan Rose, and Jamison Zitz each added a hit. For the twins Noah Kaz, Avante Walker and Brayden Chase each had a hit. Joey Vernacini threw a complete game with 10 strikeouts for the Sox. Noah Kaz went 5 1/3 with 6 strikeouts for the Twins with Brayden Chase going the rest of the way. Indians 12,Yankees 3 The Indians and Yankees met for the first time this season with Conner Elmore taking the mound for the Yankees and Jace Jedrewski on the hill for the Indians. The visiting Indians would jump out to an early lead in the top of the first inning after Tommy Clifford led off the game with a single, stole second and scored on a double by Jagger Smith. Jace Jedrewski would then single and Hayven Cordes would come through with a 2 run single scoring Smith and Jedrewski. Cordes himself would later score on a passed ball giving the Indians a 4-0 lead. The Indians would extend their lead in the 2nd inning. Tommy Clifford led off the inning with a walk and Jagger Smith singled. Jace Jedrewski then blasted a single scoring Clifford. Hayven Cordes would then hit a ground ball that was misplayed allowing Smith to score and Jedrewski would later score on a passed ball giving the Indians a 7-0 lead after two. In the 3rd inning, the Indians would add to their lead after singles by Tommy Clifford and Jagger Smith would set up Jedewski, who would blast a 2 run double over the center fielders head scoring Clifford and Smith. Jedrewski would then score on a single by Jeremiah Sheehan to give the Indians a 10-0 lead. However, in the bottom of the third inning, the Yankees would show life after Cam Riggi belted a double off the center field wall, just missing a home run. Riggi would score after a misplayed ball off the bat of Aiden Weaver. Weaver would score after another miscue off the bat of Drew Beachel and Beachel himself would also score after a hit by Donovan Galliard. Jedrewski and the Indians defense would settle down though and the score after 3 would be 10-3. The score would stay unchanged until the top of the 5th when the Indians added 2 more runs. Tommy Clifford singled, stole second and was knocked home by Jagger Smith. Smith then later scored on a ground out by Hayven Cordes. The Yankees were not able to muster any additional runs the rest of the way. For the Indians (3-1), Jedrewski was solid on the mound, going 4 innings with 4 K’s. Jagger Smith cleaned things up pitching 2 scoreless innings, striking out 4. Offensively, Smith had 4 hits, 4 runs scored and 2 RBI’s while Jedrewski added 3 hits, 3 runs scored and 3 RBI’s. Tommy Clifford also had an exceptional game with 3 hits, 1 BB, 4 runs scored. Hayven Cordes added a single with 3 RBI’s while Jeremiah Sheehan and Peyton Privitera also added hits. For the Yankees (1-3), Connor Elmore (5K’s), Colin Greene and Aiden Weaver handled the pitching duties. Elmore had 2 hits for the Yankees while Anthony Warner, Cam Riggi, Aiden Weaver and Drew Beachel also added hits. LeRoy Little League Week 2
