LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - JANUARY 12, 2020 Celtics vs Bulls This weekend's game gave us a rematch of the Celtics vs the Bulls. The Bulls were hoping to avenge the opening games 20 point defeat at the hands of the Celtics. The Bulls came into this game with one main goal, shut down the Celtics high scoring offense led by league leading scorer Ryker “Greek Freak” Vangalio. Luckily, they have just the player to do it with defensive standout Carter McClurg. The Bulls came out determined to start fast, and they did just that by riding the hot shooting hand of Cole “Cray Cray” Cray. Cray led all scorers in the first half with 8 points. Weston Humphrey was not going to make it easy though, as he hit some great shots from the outside and put up 6 points in the first half for the Celtics. The first half was a back and forth battle with the Bulls’ Andrew Sibley and Kipton Cone putting points on the board, while Robert Humphrey answered back for the Celtics. The Celtics’ Ben Cashin and Quinton Ianni played lockdown defense to keep the game close. The Bulls defense was just as tough as Dominic DeJesus and Aiden Weise led the charge for their team. Logan Corcimiglia and Cam Weber got in on the scoring as well for the Bulls. The first half ended with the Bulls leading the Celtics 16-12. The Celtics found themselves in unfamiliar territory with having to come from behind in the second half for the first time all year. How would they respond? Ask Zack Pocock and Brody Wilson who were both quite in the first half, but exploded by combining to score 10 points for the Celtics in the second half. That along with some great work on the defensive boards by Joey Wujcik and Gunner Humphrey again showing why he’s one of the league’s best defensive players, the Celtics found themselves right back in the game. The Bulls tried to stay ahead with Jackson Hubbard scoring on a nice basket of his own and Carter McClurg, adding 2 points in the second half. Ryker Vangalio who was mostly held in check by McClurg in the first half finally found his groove in the second with 6 points to add to the Celtics total. In the end, Weston Humphrey proved to be too much for the Bulls as he led the comeback and the Celtics won the game by a final score of 36-22. Leading the Bulls in scoring was Cole Cray with 8 points. Other players contributing were Andrew Sibley with 4 points, Kipton Cone, Jackson Hubbard, CamWeber, Carter McClurg and Logan Corcimiglia with 2 points each. Leading the Celtics in scoring was Weston Humphrey with 12 points. Other players contributing were Ryker Vangalio with 10 points, Zack Pocock with 6 points, Robert Humphrey and Brody Wilson with 4 points each. Lakers vs Knicks The second game of the night was another rematch as the Lakers tried to not only beat the Knicks for a second time this year, but also stay as the only remaining undefeated team in the league. The first time these two teams met, the Lakers walked away with a 24 point win. The Knicks were going to make sure that did not happen again. This time the Lakers were playing at full strength while the Knicks were playing without key contributor Killian Connolly. The game started off a little slow but it wasn't before long that Dylan Loftus got the Lakers on the board with a beautiful running bank shot off the glass. Lucas Miller, who missed the last game didn't take long to remind the Lakers why he’s one of the Knicks top offensive threats, by scoring early. Wyatt “Whip” Whipple hit on a nice jumper from the lane and Ben “Benny Buckets” Biracree scored for the second time in as many games as well. The Knicks kept the pressure on though as Connor Hanley got on the board along with Owen Nichols scoring 4 points of his own to lead his team in the first half. But the word of the day in this game was defense. Graham Pawlick and Nate Conte formed a great defensive combination for the Lakers to keep the Knicks in check while Preston Heschke and Eli “Skull” Fortuna held down the fort for the Knicks on defense. With the Lakers down by 1 with seconds left in the first half Blake Fetzer kept his consecutive game scoring streak alive with a buzzer beating shot to give his team a slim 11-10 lead to end the first half. The Knicks were hopeful they could hang with the Lakers as the game continued as Landon “Kacz” Kacznowski scored 4 points to lead his team in scoring in the second half. Thomas “Tommy Guns” Englerth had some great looks at the basket but just couldn’t get anything to drop but was a force on the boards as he led his team with 7 rebounds. John Amico made sure to keep the defensive energy high for the Lakers, while Harrison Porter did the same for the Knicks. The dynamic scoring duo of Sammy “Little Kobe” Bogue and Blake “Sweet Tea” Biracree did what they do best in the second half for the Lakers. The two teammates alone combined to outscore the Knicks 17-6 in the second half with “Sweet Tea” Biracree scoring 3 late baskets and “Little Kobe” Bogue nailing a late 3-pointer to carry their team to a 28-16 victory. The Lakers remain the only undefeated team in the league this year. The Knicks were led in scoring by Landon Kacznowski and Owen N i c h o l s each with 6 points. Other con t r i bu t or s were Connor Hanley and Lucas Miller with 2 points each. The Lakers were led in scoring by Sammy Bogue with 11 points. Other contributors were Blake Biracree with 7 points, Dylan Loftus with 4 points, Wyatt Whipple, Blake Fetzer and Ben Biracree with 2 points each. Boys Basketball Recaps January 4, 2020
