LeRoy Pennysaver & News

LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - NOVEMBER 3, 2019 LeRotary Notes President Mary Young began the weekly Rotary meeting at the Greens of LeRoy welcoming all Rotarians and guests. Our guest/presenter for todays’ meeting was Sergeant Greg Kellogg of the LeRoy Police Department. Several announcements were shared, including the upcoming game night and meeting schedule for the upcoming holiday season. Christine shared the successful community kitchen meal that was served by members of the Fire Department. A representative from Fidelis Care handed out winter hats and gloves at kitchen. Several members were fined, had excuses or makeups for missed meetings. Carol, Randy and Larry all brought gifts back from recent vacations and presented them to president Mary. Sami and Christine were not as generous with vacation gifts but promised a gift in the future. The fun continued with the fining session which is a great way to get to know your fellow Rotarians! David Grayson was fined for the adorable dance performance by his granddaughter. Bob Boyce was fined due to his dedication to the Saber’s and his attendance at a recent Sabre’s celebration. Christine Gephart and Sami Vagg were fined for sharing their beach story of an “accidental” swim with a manatee. Jim Boacquisti was fined for a “throwback” football picture. Our presentation today was given by Sergeant Greg Kellogg on Active Shooter Training. From 2000-2016, there have been 220 active mass shootings, with places of business being the most common place. Sergeant Kellogg reviewed indicators of potential violence, the history of law enforcement response to mass shootings and provided recommendations on what to do if a person is involved. The training now for officers when called to an active shooting is to stop the killing, stop the dying and evacuate the area. The LeRoy Police Department participates in extensive training with multiple local police agencies to enhance their active shooter techniques. Sergeant Kellogg stressed the importance of everyone having a safety plan when in a public place. Some suggestions included; be aware of your surroundings, if you think you hear gunshots, don’t deny what you hear and act immediately. It’s important to respond with a purpose, the worst thing to do is to do nothing. Turn fear into action, defend yourself, get out of the area and help others when necessary. One basic first aid that all should know is how to stop the bleeding, as often times this is necessary during mass shootings. The presentation was well received and many questionswere answered. Thank you to Sergeant Kellogg and the LeRoy Police Department for all you do to protect and serve our community.
