After President Jim Ellison brought the meeting to order, we said the Pledge of Allegiance, listened to a great invocation from Bob Carlsen and then welcomed our guests: Ms. JackieWhiting, President of the Le Roy Board of Education; Ms. Sarah Ford, LHS Business Teacher, and Ethan Smith, an LHS student and award winner. President Jim announced important dates including the annual “Mom Prom” to be held at Mercy Grove on May 9th, Batavia Rotary’s Centennial Celebration on May 10th, our participation in the United Way Day of Caring on May 22nd. Sami Vagg updated the club on our Graze to Raise to be held on May 17th. Scott McCumiskey challenged all Rotarians to participate to a personal level of $300! This year, proceeds will go toward a new scholarship in honor of Dr. Anil Sawhney who served the club and the community admirably for many, many years. Sami also talked about our upcoming Meat Raffle to be held at the Legion on June 15th. Tickets will go fast, so don’t miss the opportunity to buy them soon! Ask any member of the club. These are the upcoming service opportunities for the club: working at the Le Roy Rotary Community Kitchen the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of every month; dropping off clothing at the ARC for victims of sexual assault; updating Rotary archives, preparing for our strategic planning session, cleaning up Mill Street Park with the Interact kids, gathering books for our Rotary Excited About Literature (REAL) book give-away on June 29th, and, of course, identifying someone in the community who needs help. Send your ideas to President Jim at jdellison@gmail.com . Special announcements included our upcoming Membership Event on May 23rd at Farmer’s Creekside (lower bar), upcoming programs, defining how we can give back to our community in the future, the upcoming leadership turnover and Installation Banquet on June 21st, and receipt of $15,000 from the Phyllis Heyward Estate to increase the R. E. A. Milne Scholarship fund from which we fund over $35,000 in scholarships for local seniors annually. These Rotarians were recognized by President Jim for missed meetings: Ron Pangrazio who had 6 make- ups at clubs in FL, Tom Feeley who was fighting a fire during last week’s lunch meeting and was thereby excused, and Phil Plossl who also had a make- up. The fining session began with President Jim asking Ron P to define a “palindrome”, then David Grayson to talk about his money tree and Scott about “Rules for his son”. Today’s program was given by Ms. Jackie Whiting, Ms. Sarah Ford andMr. Ethan Smith. Jackie thanked Rotary for pursuing a grant to provide new flexible flooring for the Village Pool and then described the extra-curricular opportunities for students at LHS. Sarah talked about the Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA), an international association of high school and college students and teachers of marketing, management and entrepreneurship in business, finance, hospitality, and marketing sales and service. She recognized Ethan who qualified to attend DECA’s International Career Development Conference in Orlando, FL. Ethan is the first student in Le Roy history to attain this level!
