LeRoy Pennysaver & News

LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - JANUARY 27, 2019 President Jim Ellison began the weekly Rotary meeting at the Greens of LeRoy welcoming all Rotarians. President Jim lead a discussion about Anil Sawhney, an amazing Rotarian who recently passed away. Anil was so dedicated to Rotary and passionate about his Club and Rotary International and his loss will have a significant impact. Our Club will be donating to his Temple. Several announcements were shared. February 2nd will be the Big Game TV Raffle at the American Legion. If you’re interested in supporting Rotary and having a chance to win a TV, please purchase a ticket. The Rotary Club will be having a bowling night on March 15th as a fun social activity. Upcoming events in the community were announced. On March 22nd there’s the alumni basketball game, Desserts in the Stacks is on February 8th at the Woodward Library, and there will be a community service project being done at the Hope Center on February 8th. Rotary is working on a big community service project, so please stay tuned for updates. The big announcement was Marth Bailey received the Paul Harris Award at Rotary, congratulations Martha. We had several birthdays to celebrate. As Rotarians get older, the Rotary Pot gets bigger! The Rotarians really out did themselves with the amazing song, Home on the Range, to celebrate the birthdays. Happy Birthday fines were handed out to Merrit Holly, Nanette Chiulli and Betsy Halvorsen. Several members were fined, had excuses or makeups for missed meetings. Nanette Chiulli was welcomed back as was Lauren Humphrey, both paid for missed meetings. Jerry McCullough was unable to make a meeting due to a “snow squall” and President Jim had a missed meeting as well. Bob Bennett and Ben Deragon did have make ups for their misses. The fun continued with the fining session which is a great way to get to know your fellow Rotarian! Nanette was fined for having a bit too much fun at her dancing party to celebrate a big birthday! Jake Whiting was fined for a picture that was found from a Halloween party from years past and because of the Syracuse vs. Duke Game. Scott McCumiskey was fined for apparently moving, clarification was made following the meeting, as Scott really hasn’t moved. Mary Margaret Ripley was fined and was able to make an advertisement about her church’s new thrift shop. Bob Sullivan was able to get out of a fine as he answered the trivia question correctly which resulted in president Jim having to pay the fine. Jerry McCullough was fined after telling a short story. The final fine involved a “throwback” photo of Tony Gugino and Bob Bennett, one of the guys was sporting a Tom Selleck type mustache, we will let you guess who that was! Our presentation today was given by David Grayson on Genealogy. David was able to share his passion for learning about his ancestry and how he first got started with the website Family Tree. He has learned a lot about his family and has been able to trace family back to the 1400’s. One neat story he shared was how he helped a close friend begin researching his ancestry, which lead to them learning that they have a family connection. Please feel free to reach out to David if you’d like guidance or support for your own ancestry search. Remember to like us on Facebook at “Rotary Club of LeRoy”. 8700 Lake Rd.
