LeRoy Junior Football The reigning defending CYFL Junior Division Champion, Bath Rams visited a packed Hartwood Park last Saturday in a rematch of last years title game where Bath bested LeRoy. The schedule makers gave themselves a high five after booking this game in week one under the lights in LeRoy. Neither team would disappoint the high expectations as they both put on a thrilling show of defense, grit, determination, and pride. The first 1/2 was a back and forth defensive slug-fest that was highlighted by two Goal- Line stands from Bath. LeRoy’s Colin Green loves himself some Tuna and Root beer as he took the hand off and followed Anthony Warner (A&W Root beer) and Micheal Fortuna (Tuna) into the end zone on 4th down. After a delayed referee meeting they called Green’s run inches short which was unpopular to the LeRoy fans. The Rams would March down the field from the 6 inch line with powerhouse running back Brady Hopkins. The LeRoy defense led by Simon Greene, Jeremiah Sheehan, Donovan Gaillard, and Josh Colopy (Pork-chop), made some big plays to contain Hopkins. LeRoy’s Tommy Clifford saved a Touchdown when he decked Hopkins on the outside singlehandedly. LeRoy would drive the ball down the field just before the half by gutting Bath up the middle with the startling line flexing its muscles, led by Jeremiah Sheehan. Colin Green had 2 terrific runs that moved the chains. LeRoy’s Junior Knights 2 minute drill just misses punching in a TD as time expires with Bath playing outstanding defense at the 2nd quarter ends 0-0. The 3rd quarter would start with Bath on offense and the Junior Knights digging in their heels on defense. Team Defense is what works the best but every once in awhile you find yourself all alone with the ball carrier versus a line backer. Brady Hopkins hit the edge and turned the corner and found his stopper in #7 Donovan Gaillard. Gaillard thwarts off a HUGE play to stall the drive. LeRoy now on offense goes back to its game of ground and pound with Jude Christ, C. Greene and Issac Stella controlling the ball and moving the chains. The Rams load the box with 9 defenders and Brady McClurg throws a dime to his secret weapon Jordon Green. Green takes the pass 22 yards down to the 8 yard line. McClurg then takes the Quarterback keeper around the left side with David Wojtaszczyk (Wojo) and Carter Page (CP) sealing the edge for their team leader. TOUCHDOWN LeRoy! Issac Stella caps it with a tough 2 point conversion run. LeRoy 8-0 The Bath Rams were unfazed, and showed why they are the defending champs of the CYFL On the next possession they ride Hopkins to the house for a 56 yard Touchdown. Then what would turn out to be the biggest play of the game came from LeRoy’s defense on Bath’s attempt to tie the game on the 2 point conversion. Issac “Scorpion” Stella uses a one hand “Get Over Here, Come Here!” stop and LeRoy leads 8-6. Bath and LeRoy would both take offensive possessions without moving the ball into the red zone. LeRoy with the lead 8-6 with 2:53 seconds left in the final stanza has the ball, and controls their own destiny with a score, or a bunch of first downs with some more ground and pound. Again, Stella and C. Greene push the pace with hard nosed running. Greene popped a 22 yard run and stayed in bounds with a nifty cut to keep the clock running. Bath is playing solid defense and is using their time- outs wisely and is looking to get the ball back and feed Hopkins. With :53 seconds left on 4th & 4 Brady McClurg goes on a hard snap count and draws Bath offsides. This first down gives the Junior Knights the opportunity to show off the best play in football - the victory formation as McClurg takes a knee to end the game 8-6.
