LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - JULY 1, 2018 Orioles Win Scanlan Cup! Tuesday June 19th - Game 1 Orioles 8 A’s 2 Tuesday night brought fanfare and excitement as the Scanlan Cup began. The visiting A’s did not waste time in the top of the first in- ning, as Ryan Shirley drilled a triple with one out. Shirley would score on a passed ball to give the A’s the early 1-0 edge. That edge did not last long however. Drew Strollo singled to lead off for the O’s. Strollo would steal his way around the bases, eventually scoring. Merritt Holly drew a walk, and after moving over on a single by Holden Sullivan was driven in by a Jace Jedrewski single to give the O’s the 2-1 lead after 1. Orioles pitcher Drew Strollo settled in after the first inning, strik- ing out the side in the 2nd. The Orioles bats struck again in the bot- tom of the inning. Brady McClurg led off the inning with a walk. A walk to Drew Strollo set the stage for Adrian Stephens, who promptly drove both runners in with a sin- gle. Merritt Holly would also walk, however Stephens would be thrown out between 3rd and home on a heads up play by the A’s. Holden Sullivan however would deliver with two outs, driving in Holly with his second hit of the day, giving the Orioles the lead 5-1 after 2. Drew Strollo would retire the side in the 3rd, giving the O’s of- fense another chance to extend the lead. O’s second basemen Martin MacConnell led the inning off with a walk. Josh Pfendler doubled, and Brady McClurg walked to load the bases. Donovan Gaillard then drew a walk to earn a RBI, also keeping the bases loaded. Again, Adrian Stephens would deliver with a RBI single, extending the lead to 7-1 af- ter 3. The top of the fourth inning was quick, as Drew Strollo struck out 3 of the 4 batters he faced. In the bottom of the inning, the Ori- oles added another run. Holden Sullivan singled again, and was driven in by an Issaac Stella single. Both offenses were silent in the 5th inning. The A’s threatened in the top of the 6th after a leadoff single by Jackson Fix. Fix was replaced by Ryan Shirley on the basepaths after a fielder’s choice. After a RBI sin- gle by Grady Gilligan, Drew Strollo would strike out the final batter to preserve the victory for the O’s 8-2. Ryan Shirley, Jackson Fix, Grady Gilligan, and Zachary Tool- ey shared pitching duties for the A’s. Shirley led the offensive at- tack scoring two runs with a triple. Jackson Fix singled, while Grady Gilligan added a single, RBI, and walked. Tooley and Kyle Northrup also walked. Holden Sullivan had a mon- ster game at the plate, with 3 hits a run and RBI. Adrian Stephens was clutch, driving in 3 on 2 hits. Jace Jedrewski added 2 hits and a RBI. Drew Strollo singled and walked, scoring 2 runs. Merritt Holly sin- gled and walked twice, also scor- ing 2 runs. Martin MacConnell added 2 walks and a run, while Josh Pfendler doubled and scored. Isaac Stella singled and had an RBI, while Brady McClurg walked twice and scored. Donovan Gaillard also walked, forcing in a run. Drew Strollo earned the complete game win on the mound for the Orioles in dominant fashion, striking out 12 while only allowing 3 hits. Wednesday June 20th – Game 2 A’s 4 Orioles 1 Wednesday night brought a sense of urgency to the field, as the A’s prepared to stave off elimina- tion. The visiting Orioles struck quickly however in the top of the first inning. Drew Strollo led off the game with a double, and within the blink of an eye stole 3rd base and trotted home after an overthrow to give the O’s a 1-0 lead. A’s hurl- er Ryan Shirley however would induce three quick groundouts to move to the bottom of the inning. The lead did not last long however. Jackson Fix blasted a line drive to the right field wall, and was off to the races… scoring to tie the game with an inside-the-park HR. O’s pitcher Merritt Holly settled in as well, and after walking Ryan Shirley struck out 3 batters in a row to keep the game tied 1-1 after 1. Both pitchers struck out the sides in the 2nd inning. In the top of the 3rd, Drew Strollo singled with 2 outs, however was strand- ed as Shirley continued to pile up the Ks. In the bottom of the 3rd, Jackson Fix reached base again, this time on a walk. Another walk to Shirley would put Fix in scoring position. Fix would take things into his own hands, stealing 3rd and home to give the A’s the 2-1 lead after 3. A double by Jace Jedrewski was all the offense the O’s could muster up in the 4th inning. The A’s could not add to their lead in the 4th, stranding 2 runners after walks. The pitching duel was on! In the 5th, the Orioles’ Brady McClurg singled, however was stranded as Ryan Shirley continued to mix his pitches very well. The bottom of the 5th inning brought good fortune for the A’s this time around. Ryan Shirley singled to get this start- ed. Walks to Grady Gilligan and Jordon Green loaded the bases for Kaden Burger. Burger delivered with a seeing eye single through the drawn in infield, scoring 2 to extend the lead to 4-1 heading into the 6th inning. Ryan Shirley was up to the task for the A’s, getting 3 outs after an Adrian Stephens single to close the door on the O’s, finishing off the complete game win 4-1 and tying up the series. Merritt Holly struck out 10 on the mound for the Orioles in 4 innings of work. Holden Sullivan and Adrian Stephens both pitched as well for the Orioles. Drew Strollo led the offense with a dou- ble, single, and scoring the only run. Adrian Stephens and Brady McClurg both singled and Jace Je- drewski doubled. Jackson Fix had an inside-the- park HR, walked, and scored twice. Ryan Shirley singled and scored, also drawing 2 walks. Kaden Burg- er singled with 2 RBI, while Grady Gilligan walked twice and scored. Jordon Green and Jay Lathan also walked. Ryan Shirley through an absolute gem on the mound to keep his A’s alive, striking out 12 in the complete game win. Thursday June 21st – Game 3 Orioles 7 A’s 4 The deciding game 3 of the Scanlan Cup would not disappoint, and drama was plentiful as two gritty teams battled for the ultimate prize. Adrian Stephens got the start on the mound for the Orioles, and after a couple of walks in the top of the first, struck out a batter to end the initial scoring threat.
