LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - JUNE 24, 2018 LeRoy Little League White Sox 5 Tigers 1 The first round of the Scanlan Cup playoffs got under way Monday night. The #1 seeded and Historical Cup Champion Tigers took on the #8 seeded White Sox. The game got off to a slow start as Tigers pitcher Connor Hegeman retired the first 2 batters of the White Sox and after a Landen Sae- va single, catcher Alex Spezzano would pick Landen off at first base after taking a big lead. The Tigers would score only one run in the bottom of the 1st as Alex Spezzano drew a walk and would later round the bases on a Connor Hegeman hard hit single to the outfield. White Sox pitcher Tommy Condidorio shut the door on the next two batters. The next 2 innings would be the same as Tommy and Connor both would silence the bats of their opponents. But, in the top of the 4th inning, the White Sox would plate 3 runs. Parker Dow- ell led off with a single, Landen Saeva would also single, and Tommy Condi- dorio only needed to see two pitches to smash a double into the outfield bring- ing in both Parker and Landen. After Tommy stole 3rd base, Joey Reschke would put the ball in play with a single of his own bringing Tommy home to score. The inning would end as once again, Alex Spezzano would catch Re- schke taking an aggressive lead at first to throw him out. So after 4 innings of play, the White Sox would take a 3-1 lead. There would be no action for both clubs in the 5th as tough pitching and timely defense would hold the scor- ing at bay. In the top of the 6th once again, Parker Dowell led off. This time he would handle the scoring himself as he blasted a line drive to right/cen- ter field only to race around the bases for an, ‘inside the “Parker” home-run’. Jude Sherman would follow that with a single, Landen Saeva put the ball in play but, Sherman was thrown out at second. Landen would reach 2nd on a pass ball and Condidorio would smack a single to the outfield scoring Saeva from second giving the White Sox a 4 run lead head- ing into the bottom of the 6th. The Tigers would threaten in the bottom half of the inning as back to back singles from Hegeman and Lily Uberty gave them some base runners. However, Tommy Condidorio would deny the next two batters with the lat- ter hitting a pop fly to shortstop, Jude Sherman to seal the upset for the White Sox. A great season for the Tigers but, the White Sox will move on in the Scan- lan Cup playoffs. Additional hits for the Ti- gers were Sierra Burke and Noah Kaczanowski with singles. Connor He- geman had 8 strike outs pitching 5 in- nings, while Jackson Spezzano came in for 1 inning of work striking out 1 bat- ter. White Sox pitcher Tommy Condi- dorio finished with 8 strike outs to have the complete game. Orioles 7 Red Sox 0 Tuesday night’s playoff install- ment had the #7 Red Sox taking on the #2 Orioles. The visiting Red Sox went down 1-2-3 in the first inning at the hands of Orioles’ ace Drew Strollo. Strollo would draw a walk in the top of the inning, however was out at second on Adrian Stephens’ fielder’s choice. Stephens would come around to score on a Merritt Holly double, giving the Orioles the early 1-0 lead. Strollo would remain hot on the mound, as did Red Sox hurler Josh Horner, who struck out the side in the 2nd, leaving the score 1-0 Orioles after 2 innings. In the top of the 3rd, Merritt Holly would single, then move to 3rd on a Holden Sullivan double. Holly would steal home on a passed ball shortly thereafter, extending the Orioles slim lead to 2-0 after 3 innings of play. Both pitchers made it through the 4th inning without any damage, with the Orioles also shutting down the Red Sox in the 5th inning. The Red Sox could not do the same in the bottom of the inning however. A walk to Strollo got things started, followed by a single by Adrian Stephens. An intentional walk to the hot Merritt Holly loaded the bases for Holden Sullivan. Sully answered in a big way, driving in two with a rocket single. Another single, this time by Jace Jedrewski, set up two rookie Orioles with big opportunities. Isaac Stella an- swered with a 2 run single, and was then knocked in by a double by buddy Brady McClurg. All told, the Orioles plated 5 insurance runs leading into the 6th in- ning. Merritt Holly would come in to close out the game 1-2-3, advancing the Orioles to Saturday’s semifinal. Josh Horner went the distance on the mound for the Red Sox, striking out 8 in 5 innings of work. Zachary Samis had the only hit for the Red Sox, dou- bling in the 3rd inning. Horner was hit by a pitch and Zander Cole walked. Drew Strollo earned the win on the mound, striking out 10 in 5 innings pitched. Merritt Holly closed the game with 1 strikeout in 1 inning. A balanced offensive attack drove the Orioles to victory. Holden Sullivan had 2 hits, including a double, with 2 RBI and a run. Adrian Stephens added a hit and 2 runs. Merritt Holly also had 2 hits, scoring twice, walking, and adding a RBI. Leadoff man Drew Strollo walked twice and scored, while Jace Jedrewski and Martin MacConnell added singles. Isaac Stella (run, 2 RBI) and Brady Mc- Clurg (double, RBI) each added clutch hits late in the game. A’s 6 Yankees 2 Wednesday’s Scanlan Cup playoff game featuring the 3rd seeded Yankees and the 6th seeded A’s will go down in the memory books as one of the longest playoff games in LeRoy LL history. It took 11 innings to set- tle the game after each team would not produce a run for the first 10 innings. Ultimately, the A’s would put up 6-runs in the 11th to win 6-2 and advance to the semi-finals. Starting pitchers Andrew Pocock for the Yankees and Ryan Shirley for the A’s pitched two gems as they seemed to try to one-up each other every inning. Pocock pitched 8 full innings striking out 18 batters, allowing 2 hits and walk- ing none. Not to be outdone, Shirley pitched 7 2/3 innings with 14 strikeouts, allowing 1 hit and no walks. The A’s would threaten for the first time in the game in top of the 7th. Jackson Fix broke Pocock’s perfect game with a double down the third base line. He would move to 3rd on a Shir- ley infield single. The runners would be stranded after a bunt attempt was caught by Yankees catcher Jake Higgins and two strikeouts by Pocock. The Yankees would turn to Luke Lathan to finish the game. Lathan kept the A’s hitters at bay for two innings striking out 5 of the 6 batters he faced. Shirley was relieved by Grady Gilligan for the A’s. Gilli- gan would make quick work of the 9th inning but the Yanks would threaten in the bottom of the 10th. Simon Greene would lead off with a single. Lathan would ground into a fielder’s choice, Pocock was intentionally walked to put runners at first and second. A hit by Hunter Beverly would load the bases with just one out. With the infield in to protect the run, Shirley would make a play and throw the runner on third out at home for the second out. With two outs and bases loaded, Jack Currin would hit a blooper to short right field, A’s right fielder Jay Lathan would race in and make a shoe string catch to end the threat and save the season for the A’s. The A’s would use that positive energy to get going in the 11th. With one out, Lathan would draw a walk and move to second on a Kyle Northrup single. Jackson Fix would score both runners with a single to allow the A’s to take the lead 2-0. Following a single by Shirley that scored Fix, and back to back walks, Hayven Cordes hit a double to the gap that scored Shirley, Tooley and Gilligan. The A’s went into the bot- tom of the inning with a very uncom- fortable 6-0 lead. The Yanks would make a game of it in the bottom of the inning. Cam Maxwell would single and score on an X-Man, Xavier Walker double. X would score himself on a fielder’s choice to make it 6-2 Yankees. Gilligan would settle down on the mound and get the next three batters to end the threat and secure the 6-2 win for the A’s. The A’s move on to face the Twins in the semi-finals.
