LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - JUNE 17, 2018 LeRoy Little League Twins 3 Red Sox 2 Monday, June 4 showcased the third and final meeting of the season between the visiting Red Sox and the home team Twins. Once again the Twins found themselves racing against the rain and wanting to pull out a win. This game proved to be an excellent perfor- mance in pitching for the fans to enjoy. Adam Woodworth confidently took the mound for the Twins and quickly got his team into the dugout throwing only 6 pitches. Tony Martinez hit a line drive to Ayden Riggi at 1st followed by a pop up hit by Peter Clark also to 1st baseman Riggi & then Joey Stephany grounded out to 3rd baseman Cameron RIggi who recorded the out with a perfect throw to his brother on first base. The Red Sox Wyatt Draper took the mound for his team with just as much confidence and put up his own great inning, he threw only 8 pitches. Adam Woodworth grounded out to Peter Clark, Jake Iten popped up to 1st baseman Josh Horner and Tony Piazza grounded out to Peter Clark on 2nd base to round out a record fast first inning. Both teams would go down 1, 2, 3 in their perspective at bats in the 2nd inning. Woodworth gave up his first hit in the third to DJ O’Geen who ripped a double out to right center to become the only base runner to that point. 2 quick outs and then Tony Martinez would bring DJ around with a double of his own to left field he would however be left stranded as Adam struck out the fi- nal batter of the inning. Wyatt kept the Twins guessing in their half sitting them down in order for the 3rd time. Josh Horner scored the Red Sox second and final run of the game in the fourth in- ning. Jake Iten drew a walk in the Twins 4th to become their first base runner of the game. Tony Piazza singled behind him and Ayden Riggi doubled but no runs would come of those hits thanks to good defense by the Red Sox. Adam would once again hold the Red Sox scoreless in the 6th after Pe- ter Clark hit a double, giving his team a chance for a walk-off win. Isaac Furr started the Twins off with a double to left field and Adam hit a ball just out of the infield to pick up a single and move Isaac over. 3rd base would not be occu- pied for long as the sneaky Isaac stole home to record the Twins first run and now the fans were getting excited! Jake Iten hit a double and advanced Wood- worth to third base. Josh Horner would take the mound in relief of Wyatt for the Sox and Tony Piazza kept things mov- ing with a solid single to score Adam. Ayden Riggi hit a single to right field that looked like it might be caught so the runners held up, bases loaded. The next 2 batters struck out and it was look- ing like extra innings could be possible. Dylan Maciag stepped in fouled off a pitch and then was hit in the foot to walk in the winning run. Twins final score 3-2 Adam Woodworth pitched a complete game throwing just 76 pitches. Hitting for the Twins: AdamWoodworth was 1-3 with a 1B and a run scored, Jake Iten was 1-2 with 1BB, 1 2B and a run scored. Tony Piazza was 2-3 with 2B and an RBI, Ayden Riggi went 2-3 with a 1B & 2B. Isaac Furr was 1-1 with a 2B & a SB and Dylan Maciag was HBP and had an RBI. Pitching for the Red Sox was Wyatt Draper and Josh Horner. Hitting for the Red Sox was Tony Martinez going 1-3 with a 2B and an RBI, Peter Clark was 1-3 with a 2B. Josh Horner ROE and scored a run. DJ O’Geen was 1-2 with a 2B & a run scored and Josh Horner ROE. Orioles 10 A’s 1 In the third installment of the al- phabet series, the Orioles won in a game that was much closer than the score in- dicated. The game was a pitcher’s duel for most of the early morning, with the Orioles eventually exploding for multi- ple runs late. The visiting Orioles struck in the top of the first. Drew Strollo singled, and eventually stole a few bases and scored on a defensive miscue. Not to be outdone, A’s leadoff man Jackson Fix scored in the bottom of the inning after a single and stolen base, being driven home by a single by Grady Gilligan. A’s pitcher Ryan Shirley and O’s pitcher Drew Strollo settled in during second, both striking out the side. In the top of the 3rd, Isaac Stella led off of the inning with a double for the O’s. Adrian Stephens singled him in to give the O’s a 2-1 lead. O’s pitcher Drew Strollo would remain hot on the mound, striking out 7 of the next 9 batters, not allowing a hit. A’s pitcher Ryan Shirley kept pace, allowing no runs in the 4th and 5th in- ning. However in the top of the 6th, the O’s would strike and would strike big. Holden Sullivan began the rally with a single, followed by a single by Jace Je- drewski. A fielder’s choice would bring Brady McClurg to the plate. McClurg delivered with a RBI single. Isaac Stel- la followed suit with a monster dou- ble, scoring 2. Drew Strollo, Adrian Stephens, Merritt Holly all delivered with RBI hits, and to top the inning off, McClurg added another RBI single. All told, the O’s scored 8 in the inning to extend their lead to 10-1. Merritt Holly would come in to close the game, strik- ing out both hitters he faced to secure the win. Adrian Stephens had 3 hits for the O’s with a run and 2 RBI. Isaac Stella and Drew Strollo both scored 2 runs, with Strollo adding 2 hits and an RBI and Stella adding 2 doubles and 2 RBI. Merritt Holly (1 run, 2 RBI), Jace Jedrewski (1 run), and Brady McClurg (1 run, 2 RBI) all addd 2 hits. Holden Sullivan singled and scored, while Josh Pfendler scored as well. Drew Strollo earned the win on the mound, going 5 1/3 innings, striking out 12, adding 3 assists and only allowing 2 first inning hits. Merritt Holly got the save with 2 Ks. For the A’s, Jackson Fix singled and scored while Grady Gilligan singled with a RBI. Hayven Cordes was hit by a pitch. Ryan Shirley went 4 2/3 innings striking out 9 and Grady Gilligan fin- ished up on the mound for the A’s. Indians 8 White Sox 4 The Indians and White Sox met for their 3rd and final match-up of the season. The visiting White Sox would strike first in the 2nd inning after Joey Reschke led off the inning with a dou- ble. He would come around and score on a single by Brayden Chase. The In- dians would tie the game in the bottom of the 2nd after Jagger Smith scored on a bunt by Joey Vernaccini. The Sox would retake the lead scoring 2 in the 3rd inning after a triple by Landen Sae- va and a double by Tommy Condidorio. Condidorio would be driven in by Joey Costa. The Indians would add a few in the 3rd as well after Chase Cummings, Iaein Frawley and Jagger Smith all reached safely. William Bogan would single driving in 2 of the 3 runs. The Indians would extend the lead in the 4th after Chase Cummings doubled driving in Colin Greene who walked earlier in the inning. The Sox added a run in the 5th with Saeva scoring off of a Condi- dorio triple. The Indians would tack on a few more after 4 consecutive hits by Austin Bogue, Jagger Smith, William Bogan, and CJ Zglinicki to make the final 8-4. Austin Bogue started on the mound for the Indians and got the win. Bogue would go 4 1/3 allowing 3 runs while striking out 9. Chase Cummings pitched in relieve. Parker Dowell would pitch well for the Sox going 5 innings. Offensively, the Indians were led by Jagger Smith (3 for 3), Chase Cum- mings (3 for 4), and William Bogan (2 for 3 with 4 RBIs). Also collecting hits were Cole Tonzi, Cal Koukides, Austin Bogue, Joey Vernaccini, and CJ Zglinic- ki. Hitting for the White Sox were Landen Saeva (2 singles, triple), Tom- my Condidorio (single, double, triple), Joey Reschke, and Brayden Chase. Yankees 5 Tigers 0 In a battle of the first place Ti- gers and the third place Yankees, the Yankees would pull an upset behind the dominant pitching performance of their ace, Andrew Pocock. In arguably the best pitching performance of the 2018 Le Roy Little League season Pocock, the big 12 year old right hander threw a complete game, no hitter, shut out. Po- cock faced 20 batters, struck out 13 and did not give up a walk. Jackson Spezza- no would get the start on the mound for the Tigers. The Yankees scored runs in the first inning after Jake Higgins drew a walk and then advanced to third on a very well executed Simon Greene sacri- fice bunt. Higgins was then scored on a Luke Lathan RBI double. Lathan was later scored on a Andrew Pocock RBI single. The score after 1 inning of play 2 to 0 in favor of the Yankees. In the third the Yankees would add 2 more to go up 4-0 after Jake Hig- gins singled and was later scored on a Luke Lathan RBI single. Lathan would then score on a Hunter Beverly RBI sin- gle. In the 6th the Yankees would add a little insurance after Xavien Walker singled and was then scored on a Jake Higgins double. Hitting for the Yankees Luke Lathan was 3 for 3 with a double, 2 runs scored and 2 RBIs. Jake Higgins was 2 for 3 with a double, 2 runs scored, and an RBI. Xavien Walker was 2 for 4 and scored a run. Hunter Beverly and An- drew Pocock both added hits and each had an RBI for the Yankees. For the Tigers pitcher Jackson Spezzano struck out 8 batters before younger brother Alex Spezzano took over the pitching duties. Orioles 7 Twins 6 The Orioles were looking to clinch the #2 seed as they opened up the final regular season Saturday against the Twins. The visiting Twins threatened in the top of the first, loading the bases, however Orioles pitcher Holden Sulli- van was able to stop the rally. The Orioles began their first of- fensive inning with consecutive singles by Drew Strollo and Adrian Stephens. Jace Jedrewski drove both boys in with a double. A single by Josh Pfendler would set the stage for Brady McClurg, who delivered a 2 RBI double to give the Orioles the early 4-0 lead. After a scoreless 2nd, the Twins tightened the gap in the 3rd. Adam Woodworth doubled and Tony Piazza was hit by a pitch. Ayden Riggi fol- lowed with an RBI double, while Jack Egeling doubled as well, driving in two. The Orioles were held scoreless in the 4rd as Adam Woodworth pitched effec- tively. Woodworth would help his cause in the top of the 4th, hustling around to score on a Jake Iten double. The game was tied 4-4 after 4 innings. Adrian Stephens held the Twins scoreless on the mound for the Orioles in the 5th. The Orioles bats came alive again in the bottom of the inning. Ste- phens tripled to begin the inning, scor- ing on a Jace Jedrewski single. A dou- ble by Martin MacConnell would move runners to 2nd and 3rd. Again, Brady McClurg was up to the task, delivering his 2nd 2 RBI double of the game, giv- ing the Orioles the 7-4 lead heading into the 6th inning. The Twins did not give up. Isaac Furr and Tristen Wieseltier both reached base after being hit by a pitch. Another double by Jake Iten would score both, bringing the score to 7-6. However Adrian Stephens would answer the bell, inducing a 1-3 groundout and striking out the final batter with the tying run on third to preserve the win. Adam Woodworth pitched great for the Twins, striking out 9 in 5 innings of work. He also contributed on offense with a double and 2 runs. Jake Iten had 3 hits with 2 doubles and 3 RBI. Tony Piazza (run), Ayden Riggi (run, RBI), and Jack Egeling (2 RBI) all doubled as well. Dylan Maciag and Isaac Furr both singled with Furr and Tristen Wieseltier scoring. Holden Sullivan and Adrian Stephens shared pitching duties for the Orioles, both going 3 innings and com- bining for 6 strikeouts. Brady McClurg led the offensive charge with 2 doubles and 4 RBI. Jace Jedrewski drove in the other 3 runs with a single and dou- ble and scored 2 runs himself. Adrian Continued on Page 11
