LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - JUNE 3, 2018 LeRoy Little League Yankees 9 Twins 5 Adam Woodworth started on the mound for the home team Twins. The visiting Yankees led off the first inning after Andrew Pocock singled, followed by a Simon Green base hit RBI that drove in Jake Higgins who had previously drew a walk. Yan- kees pitcher Luke Lathan would hold the Twins scoreless in the first. Both teams would be held scoreless in the second. In the top of the third Jake Higgins would get things going for the Yankees with a double, Luke Lathan would follow that with a double of his own scoring Higgins. Andrew Pocock then stepped to the plate and drove the ball over the right center field fence for his second home run of the year. The Yankees would score four in the inning to put them up 4-0. In the bottom of the third the Twins would battle back Gavin Meyers reached base after being hit by a pitch, AdamWoodworth then hit an RBI dou- ble to score Meyers. Jacob Iten then hit a bullet of a line drive down the 3rd base line to get a double and score Woodworth. Iten would later score in the inning to put the game at 4-3 in fa- vor of the Yankees. The Twins would hold the Yankees scoreless in the top of the fourth. Xavien Walker took over the pitching duties for the Yankees in the bottom of the 4th and struck out three straight. In the fifth the Yankees would get the bats going again with a Jake Higgins single followed by a Luke Lathan single. Simon Green would then hit a 2 RBI single driving in Hig- gins and Lathan to put the Yankees up 6-3. The Yankees would again hold the Twins scoreless in the 5th. In the 6th Cam Maxwell (aka Max Camwell) drew a walk and then scored on an Xavien Walker RBI double. Jake Hig- gins would then score Walker on a RBI single. Andrew Pocock added an RBI single of his own to put the game at 9-3 in favor of the Yankees. The Twins would fight back in the bottom of the 6th adding 2 runs after Jack Egeling and Cameron Riggi reached base on walks and were later scored on an Eli- jah Iten single. Hitting for the Yankees Jake Higgins was 3 for 3 with a walk a dou- ble, and 4 runs scored. Luke Lathan was 2 for 4 with a double 2 runs scored and 2 RBIs. Andrew Pocock was 3 for 4 with a home run and 4 RBIs. Simon Green went 2 for 3 with a walk and an RBI. Xavien walker added a dou- ble and an RBI. Hitting for the Twins Adam Woodworth was 2 for 4 with a double an RBI and a run scored. Jacob Iten was 1 for 2 with a double and an RBI. A’s 8 Indians 0 After a rainout on Tuesday, the A’s faced the Indians in a 4pm show- down on Wednesday. The A’s Ryan Shirley was in mid-season form as he pitched a gem of a game allowing the A’s to win 8-0. Shirley would come in in relief and pitch 5 2/3 innings al- lowing just 1 hit, while walking 0 and striking out 9 Indian batters. The A’s Jackson Fix scored a run in the first which would prove to be all the A’s needed. Fix singled, stole second and third and scored on a Zach Tooley fielder’s choice. The Indians would load the bases in the first be- fore Shirley shut them down forcing a ground out to second and a strikeout. The A’s got two more in the sec- ond on back to back singles by Fix and Shirley and a Grady Gilligan double to make it 3-0. Shirley, Fix and Gilligan would combine for 4 more runs on 5 hits over the course of the game as the A’s pulled away. The Indians loan hit came on a Chase Cummings infield hit in the third inning. Hayven Cordes, and Connor Elmore would also have hits for the A’s. The Indians used a pitcher by committee as Iaein Frawley, Maicen McKenzie and Cummings all saw ac- tion. Fix would leave the game for A’s after 20 pitches in the first with a strikeout and two walks. Orioles 2 Tigers 1 The second game Wednesday night was a tight contested ballgame that did not disappoint the crowd. In an extremely well-played game that featured several double plays, players thrown out at the plate, timely hitting, and fantastic pitching, the Orioles were able to pull out the victory, handing the 2018 Historical Cup Champion Tigers their first loss of the season. The visiting Orioles struck in the first inning. A walk to leadoff bat- ter Drew Strollo and passed ball put the speedster in scoring position. Adrian Stephens took advantage of the oppor- tunity and drove Strollo in with a sin- gle. Merritt Holly singled, furthering the scoring threat. The Tigers however thwarted the threat when after a putout at 1st base, Lily Uberty fired home to nail Stephens, ending the inning with a double play. Tigers leadoff batter Alex Spez- zano led off the bottom of the inning with an infield single. Connor He- geman drilled a double to left field, scoring Spezzano to tie the game up in the blink of an eye. Tigers pitcher Jackson Spezzano settled in during the 2nd inning, striking out the side. Ori- oles pitcher Drew Strollo settled in as well, striking out 2 and throwing out a runner at first to retire the side in the bottom of the 2nd stanza. The Orioles would get the bats going again in the top of the 3rd in- ning. Drew Strollo led the inning off with a single. Another single by Adri- an Stephens and walk to Merritt Holly would load the bases for Holden Sulli- van. Sullivan would drive in Strollo to take the lead 2-1. The bases remained loaded, with the Orioles threatening again. Lily Uberty again would put a stop to any rally, snagging a soft liner and stepping on first base for another inning ending double play. The bottom of the 3rd inning would provide more great play and dra- ma. Alex Spezzano would single again and reach second base on a passed ball. A groundout would move the hustler to third base with one out. Connor Hege- man stepped to the plate and hit a fly ball to centerfield. Orioles centerfield- er Brady McClurg made a textbook play, gathering himself under the ball to make the catch, firing the ball home to attempt to stop the runner from scor- ing tagging up from 3rd base. Catcher Holden Sullivan made the catch and tagged the runner, scrambling for the plate, ending yet another inning on a double play! The Orioles began a 2 out ral- ly in the top of the 4th when McClurg and Donovan Gaillard drew walks. An intentional pass to Drew Strollo would load the bases, when Tigers reliever Alex Spezzano took the mound. With 2 outs and bases loaded, Adrian Ste- phens smoked a liner to the right side of the field, where first baseman Lily Uberty made a great catch to again stop a rally. In the bottom of the 4th Uberty reached on an error, however the Ori- oles were able to avert any crisis when pitcher Drew Strollo made a diving catch in foul territory to end the inning. Both Strollo and Tigers hurler Alex Spezzano would shut down the offens- es in the 5th and 6th innings, allowing the Orioles to hang on to a slim 2-1 margin of victory. Jackson Spezzano mixed his pitches very well, only allowing 2 runs while striking out 7 in 3 2/3 innings. Brother Alex Spezzano was equally as impressive, allowing no runs while striking out 4 in 2 1/3 innings. Alex led the Tigers with 2 singles, scoring a run. Connor Hegeman doubled with an RBI, while Noah Kacznowski and Lily Uberty also reached base. Drew Strollo remained hot on the mound, earning his second consec- utive complete game victory, striking out 11 with no free passes. Strollo paced the offense as well, singling, drawing 2 walks, and scoring both runs. Adrian Stephens singled twice with an RBI, while Merritt Holly reached base all three times with 2 singles and a walk. Holden Sullivan singled with an RBI and Martin MacConnell added a single. Brady McClurg and Donovan Gaillard also walked. White Sox 13 Red Sox 5 This was the second meeting of the season between the White Sox and the Red Sox. The White Sox had Tommy Condidorio on the mound fir- ing 10 strike outs and he definitely had some run support today. The White Sox would score in every inning ex- cept the 4th. Parker Dowell would lead the team with 4 runs scored, add- ing 3 hits. Jude Sherman would have 3 runs scored as well as 3 hits and 1 RBI. Landen Seava would have his best day at the plate scoring twice, going 5 for 5 with 4 singles and a triple, and adding 3 RBI. Tommy Condidorio would have a triple of his own while adding a sin- gle, scoring twice, and having 3 RBI. Joey Costa would get in on the action as well driving in 3 runs on 2 hard hit singles into the outfield. Joey Reschke would reach base 3 out of 4 times, add- ing 2 hits of his own driving in 1 run. To round out the scoring for the White Sox, Tommy Clifford and Evan McAl- lister would both score runs after both reaching base on balls. As for the Red Sox, they start- ed off hot in the bottom of the 1st with 3 runs scored by Tony Martinez, Joey Stephany, and Josh Horner. Stephany had a hard-hit single and Horner had a monster double that scored both Marti- nez and Stephany. Peter Clark would also single in the inning driving in Horner to score. Good pitching and timely defense by the White Sox would keep the Red Sox fairly quiet the rest of the way. Adding a run was Zach Samis after reaching base on a single. Tony Martinez would score again in the 4th after hitting a triple and stealing home after the next pitch. Adding hits for the Red Sox was Tony Martinez with 2 singles. Joey Stephany added a triple, another single, and 1 RBI. Josh Horner would add a single and finished with 2 RBI. Peter Clark would add a double and another single picking up 1 RBI himself. Zander Cole would also add a single. Pitching for the Red Sox was Tony Martinez, Josh Horner, and Joey Stephany. They would combine for 9 strike outs. Yankees 6 A’s 0 The Yankees ace and big 12-year-old Andrew Pocock would have a dominant pitching performance against the A’s. Pocock would go 5 and 2/3 innings before giving up a hit, striking out 13 batters and shutting out the A’s. The Yankees defense also did their part playing error free baseball for the entire game. Grant Gilligan would get the start on the mound for the A’s. For the Yankees Xavien Walker would start the game off with a tri- ple. Jake Higgins would then double to score Walker. Luke Lathan would keep the hitting alive driving in Hig- gins on an RBI single. Gilligan would battle back striking out 2 of the next 3 batters to end the half inning. After 1 inning Yankees 2 A’s 0. In the third the Yankees would get on the board again after a leadoff single by Jake Higgins. Luke Lathan would then score Higgins on an RBI triple. Joey Biletskiy then doubled to score Lathan putting the Yankees up 4-0. In the 5th the Yankees would add 2 more after Luke Lathan and Andrew Pocock drew walks and scored in the inning. Final score Yan- kees 6 A’s 0. Hitting for the Yankees Jake Higgins was 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored, a double and 1 RBI. Luke Lathan was 2 for 2 with a walk a tri- ple 2 RBIs. Avante Walker was 1 for 1 with a single after executing a perfect bunt. Xavien Walker added a triple and Joey Biletskiy added a double. For the A’s Ryan Shirley singled.
