LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - MAY 27, 2018 LeRoy Little League the Red Sox were Tony Martinez and Wyatt Draper. Martinez struck out 5. Josh Horner singled for Red Sox as did Joey Stephany. Tony Martinez tripled and scored 2 runs. Orioles 6 Twins 4 The Orioles and Twins met up for the second time this season on Friday night. The Orioles started early, with Drew Strollo leading off the game with a single, followed by a single by Adrian Stephens. A passed ball, RBI by Merritt Holly, and RBI groundout by Jace Je- drewski would give the Orioles an early 3-0 lead. Pitcher Merritt Holly cruised through the first two innings on the mound for the Orioles, striking out 5. However, in the bottom of the 3rd the Twins took advantage of walks to Adam Woodworth, Jacob Iten, and Tony Piaz- za when Ayden Riggi knocked in 2 with a double. A walk to his little brother Cam would score another run, knotting the game up at 3 after 3 innings of play. In the top of the 4th inning, Mar- tin MacConnell walked to get the in- ning started. A clutch single by Brady McClurg put MacConnell in scoring position. Brady’s cousin Drew Strollo would deliver a key 2 out RBI single to plate MacConnell, giving the Orioles a slim 4-3 lead. In the 4th inning, Holly would hand off pitching duties to Adrian Ste- phens, who helped shut down the Twins in the 4th and 5th innings. The Orioles, looking for insurance in the 6th inning would find some in the top of their order with a big two out rally. Drew Strollo and Adrian Stephens both singled, set- ting the plate for Merritt Holly. Holly would deliver with a big 2 run double, extending the Orioles lead to 6-3 head- ing into the bottom of the inning. The Twins Jacob Iten would make things in- teresting doubling in AdamWoodworth, however the Orioles closer Adrian Ste- phens would shut the door, preserving the win 6-4. Adam Woodworth and Tony Pi- azza both pitched effectively for the Twins. Offensively, Woodworth scored 2 runs while singling twice. Jacob Iten walked twice, singled, and scored, while Piazza also walked twice and scored. Ayden Riggi had a double and 2 RBI, while Dylan Maciag also doubled. Cam Riggi walked twice, and Jack Egeling also drew a walk. Merritt Holly earned the win on the mound going 3 2/3 innings, striking out 8. Adrian Stephens struck out 3 in 2 1/3 innings to notch the save. Holly had 3 hits (double, run) and 3 RBI. Drew Strollo went 3 for 3 with a walk, 2 runs, and an RBI. Stephens had 2 singles and 2 runs. Holden Sullivan and Brady Mc- Clurg added singles, with Martin Mac- Connell walking twice and scoring a run. Jace Jedrewski added a RBI. Tigers 5 A’s 2 Week 5 of the season began after the grounds crew at the Little League field worked diligently to get the field ready for play. The home Tigers scored the first run of the game in the bottom of 1st inning. After a 2 out double by Connor Hegeman, Josh Noble hit him home with a RBI single. Tigers 1, A’s 0. The game would remain 1-0 until the third inning. With 1 out, Jackson Spez- zano singled followed by a single by Connor Hegeman. Lily Uberty reached after being hit by a pitch. Josh Noble followed with a big 2 RBI single and Sierra Burk followed with a RBI ground out making the score 4-0 Tigers. Both starting pitchers, Connor Hegeman for the Tigers and Grady Gilligan for the A’s, pitched scoreless 4th innings. The Tigers extended their lead to 5-0 in the fifth inning when Lily Uberty scored on a bases loaded walk. The A’s would score 2 runs in the bottom of the 6th to make the final score Tigers 5, A’s 2. Jay Lathan drew a leadoff walk, followed by a single by Jackson Fix. They would both score. Making his first career Little League start for the A’s was Grady Gilligan. Gilligan pitched effectively through 4 1/3 innings allowing 8 hits and 4 runs while striking out 3. Jackson Fix recorded the final 2 outs. Jackson Fix was 2-3 with a run scored for the A’s and Zack Tooley added a single. Jay Lathan walked and scored. Noah Kaczanowski was 3-3 for the Tigers with 3 singles. Jackson Spezzano was 2-3 with a run scored. Connor Hegeman was 2-3 with 2 runs scored and a double. Lily Uberty was 2-2 with a walk and run scored. Josh Noble added a single. Sierra Burk and Lily Uberty added RBI’s for the Ti- gers. Grant Northrup and Matt Covert reached walked once. Twins 15 Indians 2 Saturday, May 19th saw the sec- ond contest between the Le Roy Little League visiting Twins vs. the home team Indians on a rainy turned beautiful day. Maicen McKenzie took the mound first for the Indians and the Twins bats got going quickly, Adam Woodworth singled, Jake Iten doubled behind him and Tony Piazza stepped in to pick up an RBI with a ground ball to second that scored Adam. Ayden Riggi singled home Jake for an RBI and was thrown out going to 2nd followed by Jack Egel- ing and Cameron RIggi each picking up a couple singles. As Dylan Maciag was set to take his turn at the plate the Indi- ans would throw out Jack trying to steal leaving the score at 2-0 as Ayden Riggi took the mound for the twins. Ayden had a very efficient 1st throwing just 9 pitches thanks to some great Twins de- fense behind him. Neither side would score in the 2nd but the Twins did add 2 more runs in the 3rd thanks to hits from Iten, Piazza, Riggi and Egeling. The Twins provided the crowd with a very exciting 4th inning clinic as they batted around and plated 6 runs! Dylan Maciag started things off with a single to center, Elijah Iten singled to right after a pitch- ing change brought Cal Koukides to the mound, Adam Woodworth singled to center to pick up an RBI. Jake Iten would walk & Tony Piazza would hit a monster double to get himself 3 more RBI’s. Ayden Riggi doubled to plate the final run of the inning. The Indians got their bats going in their half of the 4th as Iaein Fraw- ley singled and Austin Bogue stepped in the box to double him home plating the Indians first run. Cole Tonzi drew a walk and Riggi would strike out the next 2 batters to limit the damage. Things would continue to go well for the Twins in the 5th inning as Elijah Iten would take one for the team reaching base on a HBP, Tristan Wieseltier picked up a single and Jake Iten drew his second walk of the day reaching base for the 5th time!! Ayden Riggi singled to pick up his 5th & 6th RBI’s of the day. Jack Egeling continued his great hitting with another hit and Cameron Riggi hit a double behind him. Heading into the bottom of the 5th the score stood at 14- 1. Maicen would draw a walk to start the inning; Chase Cummings hit a short grounder back to the mound before Cal Koukides slapped a single just past the short stop. Maicen came around to score as the last run Ayden would give up on the day. Austin Bogue on the mound for the Indians would do his best to quiet the Twins bats. Elijah singled and his brother Jake picked up his 4th hit and an RBI to bring him home. Ayden Riggi turned in a complete game on the mound for the Twins, re- cording 4K’s, 2BB and gave up only 9 hits. On offense, he went 4-4(3 1B, 1 2B) picking up 6 RBI’s and scoring 2 runs. Leading the way on offense was Jake Iten he went 4-4 with 2BB on base 6 times! He had 2 2B an RBI and he scored 4 runs. Tony Piazza went 3-5 with a base clearing 2B, 4 RBI’s and 2 runs scored. Jack Egeling went 2-4 with a 2B and an RBI, Cameron Riggi 2-4 with a 2B and 2 RBI’s. Dylan Maciag 1-4 with a run scored, Elijah Iten 2-2 and HBP with 3 runs scored and Tristan Wieseltier singled and scored. Pitching for the Indians was Mai- cen McKenzie, Cal Koukides and Aus- tin Bogue. Iaein Frawley had 2 1B, an RBI and scored, Austin Bogue had a 2B and an RBI. Each also recording a sin- gle were: Chase Cummings, Cal Kou- kides, CJ Zglinicki, Cole Tonzi, Joey Vernaccini and Jagger Smith. Maicen McKenzie had BB with a run scored. Final Score was 15-2 Twins. Twins take on the Yankees on Monday, May 21 @6pm and The Indians take on the A’s Tuesday @6pm. White Sox 6 Orioles 5 After rain delays in the morning, Saturday afternoon baseball got un- derway as the Orioles and White Sox squared off for their second matchup of the season. Action early as the O’s put up 3 runs in the top of the 1st with Drew Strollo doubling, Adrian Stephens walk- ing, Merritt Holley singling, and Holden Sullivan with an RBI single to get start- ed. The White Sox would answer with 1 run of the own as Parker Dowell would score off a Tommy Condidorio single ending the inning with a score of 3-1. Good defense would prevail until the 4th inning as the White Sox would add 4 runs to go on top 5-3. Parker Dowell would single and later score with Jude Sherman on a double from Tommy Condidorio. Joey Costa would single, scoring Condidorio after steal- ing third. Brayden Chase would have a monster double bringing in Costa after he stole second. Things would get interesting as the Orioles put up 2 runs in the top of the 5th inning to tie the ball game at 5. Drew Strollo led off with a blast to the centerfield wall to give himself a dou- ble. Merritt Holley, Holden Sullivan, and Jace Jedrewski would each single as Strollo and Sullivan eventually scored. The O’s shut down the Sox in the bot- tom of the 5th on good pitching from Martin McConnell and the Sox would play good defense in the top of the 6th to keep the score tied going into the bot- tom of the sixth. The White Sox would load the bases with their first 3 batters and Landen Saeva would steal home on a pass ball to score the winning run for the Sox as the game closed with a score of 6 to 5. Pitching for the White Sox was Tommy Condidorio having 8 strike outs. Parker Dowell came in to close the game with 2 strike outs of his own. Hitting for the Sox was Dowell (3 sin- gles), Jude Sherman (1 single), Landen Saeva (1 single, 1 RBI), Condidorio (1 single, 1 double, 1 RBI), Costa (1 sin- gle, 1 RBI), Brayden Chase (1 double 1 RBI), and Jack Clifford (1 single first LL hit). Pitching for the Orioles was Hold- en Sullivan striking out 5 and Martin McConnell striking out 4. Hitting for the O’s was Strollo (1 single, 2 doubles), Merritt Holly (3 singles, 1 RBI), Holden Sullivan (2 singles, 2 RBI), Jedrewski (1 single), and McConnell (1 single, 1 RBI). Red Sox 9 Yankees 8 The Red Sox and the Yankees squared off Saturday with the Red Sox earning the 9-8 victory. The game was close the whole way through. Both teams fought until the very last out. The Sox opened up the scoring in their half of the first. Tony Martinez reached base with a single and later scored on a Josh Horner double giving them a 1-0 lead. The Yankees responded in a big way in their half of the inning by scoring 4 runs of their own. Xavien Walker lead off with a double followed by a Jake Higgins single, a Luke Lathan walk and a Andrew Pocock single. All four would come around to score. Jack Currin also singled in the inning which ended with the Yanks having a 4-1 lead. The second inning would turn out to be a huge one for the Sox. They answered with 7 runs of their own. DJ O’geen started off the inning with a double to the center field wall. Alex Stephany singled and Zach Samis walked, loading the bases. Jayce Pane- pento then singled home O’geen. Marti- nez and Horner would hit back to back doubles that would clear the bases. Peter Clark reached and scored in the inning. O’geen and A. Stephany would add an- other single in the inning before it was over. In total the Sox sent 12 batters to the plate recording 7 hits to take a 8-4 lead. The Yankees would answer with 3 more of their own in their half of the second. Higgins reach base to start the inning and Lathan(2B) and Pocock would follow it up with consecutive base hits. All three would come around to score. Currins second hit of the day scored Pocock making the score 8-7. Cam Maxwell and Nate Pangrazio both drew walks in the inning. The Sox tacked one on in the third when Martinez walked and came around to score on Horner’s 3rd double of the game. The Yanks were scoreless in their half making it Sox 9 Yanks 7. Peter Clark, Zander Cole and Panepento reached base in the 4th but were unable to score. The Yanks went in order in their half as the score remained 9-7. Joey Stephany singled in the fifth but could not score for the Sox. Walk- er was also left stranded in the Yankees part of the fifth. It remained 9-7 heading to the 6th. The Sox went in order in their of the sixth and headed to the bottom of the inning with a 2 run lead. Pocock lead off the inning with a single and would score on a hit by Simon Green. But the Red Sox would get the next three hitters and hang on for the 9-8 win. Josh Horner and Joe Stephany shared the pitching duties for the Sox. Horner started and pitched the first 3 in- nings. He struck out 7. Stephany pitched the final 3 innings and struck out 5. For the Yankees Pocock would get the start and pitch 3 1/3 innings. He struck out 5. Lathan would pitch the last 2 2/3. He struck out 3.
