Dumpsters are being reorganized with the hopes of improving traffic flow. As we previously reported to you, some of our major costs at the site are the transportation fees for removal of waste. We are going to “attack” that ele- ment of our costs with the hopes that this will keep our card fees and tax rates at present levels as they relate to the transfer sta- tion. We are asking for your help in two ways to do this. First, for those bringing plastics to the site for recycling, please crush these containers prior to depos- iting them in the dumpster. You would be amazed at how much space (wasted “air space”) non- crushed plastic containers take up. Second, for those who are physically able (do not worry about this if it poses a difficulty for you), please toss your gar- bage into a dumpster “over the front” whenever possible. This will also make for more effi- cient space utilization. The rea- son we are talking about space, is that we are only going to have dumpsters (other than garbage) hauled away when the Highway Superintendent inspects them and deems them full. Fewer containers being transported away less frequently should re- duce our overall costs signifi- cantly. On behalf of the entire Town Board and employees, I wish to pay respects to the pass- ing of a long-time member of the “Town Board family.” Fred “Duke” Merica, according to my records, served longer as a Town Councilman than anyone in town history (over 25 years). I had the privilege of sitting across from him for eight of those years. I remember him most for always trying to make a contentious situation a win- win. The Town Board will miss him.
