LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - MAY 13, 2018 LeRoy Little League Opening Day A’s 4 Orioles 3 The folks interested in the start of the 2018 Alphabet Series would have to wait a couple extra days as rain on Saturday forced the game to be played at 4pm on Monday. The wait turned out to be worth it as the two teams battled it out with the A’s ultimately scoring the winning run in the bottom of the sixth in- ning to take the first game of the series 4-3. The O’s received great pitching from Drew Strollo, Merritt Holly and Adrian Stephens and were matched all day by the A’s Ryan Shirley, Jackson Fix and Grady Gilligan. It was Gilligan who picked up the win as he came in relief in the top of the 6th inning. The O’s led the entire way as Strollo pro- vided much of the offensive punch, with a double, triple, walk and 2 runs scored. Holden Sullivan did a masterful job behind the plate keeping the A’s base runners at bay, also adding 2 hits and 2 RBI. Adrian Stephens also doubled, scored, and had an RBI. Trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth, the A’s took advantage of the hammer. Kaden Burger drew a walk and scored on a single to right field by Connor Elmore. Walks to Kyle Northrup and Jackson Fix would move Elmore to third and load the bases. With his brother Jacob Elmore at the plate, Connor would score the game winning run on a wild pitch clinching the game for the A’s. It was the first win of the season for the A’s while the O’s suffered their first loss. Jackson Fix reached base all 4 times with 3 walks and a single, scoring a run. Ryan Shir- ley singled twice and drove in 2. Burger walked and scored, while Connor Elmore singled and scored the winning run. Game #2 of theAlphabet Series will be played on Saturday at 11am. It should not disappoint. White Sox 6 Red Sox 5 To start off the second week of the Little League season, the White Sox and Red Sox squared off in what ended up being a nail biter. Josh Horner of the Red Sox would set the tone in the first inning with a lead-off double, later scoring on a single from Wyatt Draper. Parker Dowell would reach base on a single, only to steal 2nd and 3rd to set up a scoring opportunity for the White Sox. Landen Saeva would answer that call by putting a sacrifice groundball in play to score Parker. Entering the 2nd inning with the game tied at 1, the Red Sox would get the bats going by adding 4 runs. Jeremiah Sheehan would reach base only to be driven in by a huge home run from Josh Horner. The next batter, Joey Stephany hit a laser shot to right field that just went fair. He raced around the bases to beat the throw at home plate re- sulting in an inside–the-park home run. Tony Marti- nez would tack on another run as he was driven home by an Alex Stephany single making the score 5-1 in favor of the Red Sox. However, the White Sox would make a comeback in the 3rd as they would add 4 runs of their own to tie the game at 5. Tommy Clifford would reach base on balls, Evan McAllister would put the ball in play as a sacrifice grounder to advance Tommy to 2nd, and Tommy would score on a hard hit single by Parker Dowell. Jude Sherman would reach on a single and Landen Saeva would pick up another RBI by driving in Parker. Sherman would later score on a bases loaded walk to Joey Costa. The White Sox would add the go ahead run in the bottom of the 4th as Parker Dowell reached base on a single only to steal around again, finally scoring on a pass ball. The Red Sox would threaten to tie the game in the 6th with runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out but, Tommy Condidorio would strike out the next 2 bat- ters to close out the game with a score of 6-5 White Sox. Adding singles for the White Sox would be Joey Reschke and Deacon Queal (getting his first Little League hit). Parker Dowell would have 4 strikeouts as well as Tommy Condidorio adding 6 of his own for the White Sox pitching duties. Additional hits for the Red Sox would be Josh Horner adding a double, Joey Stephany, Tony Martinez, Peter Clark, Alex Stepha- ny, and Zander Cole all added singles. On the mound for the Red Sox was Josh Horner and Wyatt Draper combing for 8 strike outs. Tigers 4 Yankees 2 After being rained out the previous Saturday, the Tigers and Yankees squared off on a Tuesday af- ternoon. The Tigers would jump out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st inning on a single by Alex Spezzano, RBI double by Connor Hegeman and a RBI triple by Lily Uberty. Tigers 2, Yankees 0. Both starting pitchers, Andrew Pocock for the Yan- kees and Connor Hegeman for the Tigers, would pitch scoreless 2nd innings. In the top of the 3rd inning the Yankees would tie the score at 2-2. With one out Xavien Walker would reach on a single followed by an RBI by Jake Higgins and double by Luke Lathan. Tigers 2, Yankees 2. In the bottom half, the Tigers would retake the lead to 3-2 after a one out double by Connor Hegeman followed by an RBI single by Lily Uberty and a double by Josh Noble. In the fifth inning the Tigers would add another run. After walks by Connor Hegeman and Jackson Spezzano, Lily Uberty hit an RBI single to make it 4-2 which is how it would end. The Tigers were led offensively by Lily Uberty who was 3-3 with 3 RBI. Connor Hegeman was 2-2 with a walk, 3 runs scored and a RBI, Alex Spezzano added a hit and a run and Jackson Spezzano reached on a walk. Connor Hegeman pitched 4 in- nings while surrendering 3 hits, a walk and struck out 9. Jackson Spezzano threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings and Alex Spezzano came in for the final two outs. For the Yankees, Luke Lathan was 2-3 with a double. Jake Higgins was 1-3 with a double, run scored and a RBI, Xavien Walker added a single and run scored; Andrew Pocock reached twice on walks. On the mound for the Yankees,Andrew Pocock threw 4 2/3 innings giving up 7 hits and striking out 9. Jake Higgins struck out the only batter he faced. Indians 6 A’s 5 The Indians hosted theA’s in a tightly contest- ed match up. The A’s would put 2 runs on the board in the first with Jackson Fix, Ryan Shirley, and Zach Tooley all getting singles. The Indians would cut into the lead after Austin Bogue drove in Cal Koukides in the bottom half of the 1st. The Indians would tie the game up at 2 when Maicen McKenzie scored on a single by Koukides. The game would remain tied un- til the bottom of the 4th when the Indians would add 4 runs by Cole Tonzi, Maicen McKenzie, Cal Kou- kides, and Iaein Frawley. In the top of the 5th, the A’s would rally with Ryan Shirley, Zach Tooley, and Grady Gilligan all scoring. The big inning was high- lighted by Tooley’s triple. However, that would be all the A’s would be able to tally as the Indians held them in the 6th. Iaein Frawley pitched well for the Indians going 3 innings striking out 8. Chase Cummings also pitched and would record the win. Ryan Shirley, Zach Tooley, and Grady Gilligan all made appearances on the mound for the A’s. Hitting for the Indians were Maicen McKen- zie, Cal Koukides (single, triple), Austin Bogue (sin- gle, double) and Iaein Frawley (single, home run). Hitting for the A’s were Jackson Fix (2 singles), Ryan Shirley (3 singles, double), Zach Tooley (single, tri- ple), Jay Lathan, and Kalob Lang. Red Sox 9 Twins 8 (5 Innings) The Red Sox were able to get their first win of the season when they squared off with the Twins on Wednesday. The won the time shortened contest by a final score of 9-8. They used some timely hitting to outlast the Twins in this high scoring game. The Sox came out swinging and put up 3 runs in the top of the first. A single by Josh Horner and doubles by Tony Martinez and Alex Stephany high- lighted the 3-run inning. The Twins answered with 2 of their own in their half of the first. Singles by Adam Woodworth and Jack Egeling were key to playing the runs. Zander Cole started the top of the 2nd inning with a single for the Red Sox and would later come around to score on a double by Horner. Consecutive singles by Martinez as Wyatt Draper would score 2 more runs giving the Sox a 6-2 lead after an inning and a half. The Twins answered in a big way in their half of the inning when Tristan Wieseltier and Cam Riggi reached base and came around to score on a big 3-run HR over the left field fence by Jacob Iten. They would tack in another in the frame tying the score at 6-6 after 2 innings. DJ O’geen walked and eventually came around to score in the third to get the lead back for the Sox, 7-6. The Twins were held scoreless in their half. Peter Clark started the top of the 4th with a single and would later stretch the Sox lead to 8-6 when with two outs Clark stole home. Again the Twins went scoreless and the Sox took a 8-6 lead into the 5th inning. Joey Stephany started the fifth with a sin- gle and would score one batter later when Martinez ripped a triple down the left field line. The Sox lead 9-6 heading into the bottom of the fifth. The Twins showed some great character in the bottom of the inning. Aiden Riggi and Egeling would reach base and score in the inning but that’s as close as they could get as the game would end due to time restraints. It was indeed a great Little League ball game. Both Horner and Martinez wound up 3-4 at the plate to lead the Sox. Draper and Joey Stephany were great on the mound all game. Stephany struck out 7 over 4 innings. The Twins were led by Iten. He was 1-2 in- cluding the 3-run blast. Tony Piazza struck out 2 in 2 innings while Aiden Riggi struck out 7 over 2 2/3. Woodworth picked up the final out via strikeout. Tigers 11 Orioles 3 Both teams would get off to hot starts each scoring two runs in the 1st inning. The Tigers would plate Connor Hegeman and Jackson Spezzano on a 2 RBI two out single by Josh Noble. The Orioles would answer with RBI’s by Merritt Holly and Hold- en Sullivan after a leadoff walk to Drew Strollo and single by Adrian Stephens. Tigers 2, Orioles 2. The Tigers would score three more runs in the second. Alex Spezzano would score Aidan Weaver with an RBI single and Jackson Spezzano would plate two more with a two out triple up the middle. Tigers 5, Orioles 2. In the top of the 4th inning the Tigers would break it open by scoring 4 more runs, all with 2 outs, on RBI’s by Lily Uberty, Josh Noble (2) and Noah Kaczanowski. Tigers 9, Orioles 2. Both teams would add runs to their totals in the fifth. CamWilson would score on a RBI single byAlex Spezzano for the Tigers and Drew Strollo, after reaching on a single, would score on a RBI double by Merritt Holly. Tigers 10, Orioles 3. The Tigers would add one more in the sixth inning. Jackson Spezzano singled and was driv- en home by Josh Noble on a two out double. Tigers 11, Orioles 3. Leading the Tigers offensively was Josh No- ble. Josh was 3-4 with a run scored, double, triple and 5 RBI. Jackson Spezzano was 2-2 with 2 runs scored, 2 RBI and added 2 walks. Alex Spezzano was 2-4 with a run and 2 RBI, Lily Uberty was 1-3 with a RBI and run scored, Noah Kaczanowski was 2-4 with a RBI and Connor Hegeman scored twice. Jackson Spezzano handled the pitching duties for the Tigers. In recording the win, Jackson Spezzano completed 5 innings while surrendering 5 hits, 1 walk and striking out 9. Alex Spezzano pitched a perfect 6th inning, striking out two. Merritt Holly led the Orioles recording 2 hits in 3 at bats with 2 doubles and 2 RBI. Drew Strollo was 1-2 with a walk and 2 runs scored. Adrian Ste- phens added a hit and run scored and Holden Sullivan recorded 1 RBI. Starting on the mound for the O’s was Holden Sullivan. Holden pitched 1 1/3 innings. Drew Strollo threw 2 2/3 innings and Martin MacCo- nnell threw the final two innings. Yankees 6 Twins 1 In a dominating pitching performance by lefty Xavien, X-Man, Walker the Yankees would defeat the Twins by a score of 6 to 1. Walker controlled the game for the Yankees recoding a complete game and striking out 14 batters while only allowing 3 hits. Offensively X-Man would go 2 for 3 on the day and score 2 runs. Also hitting for the Yankees Luke Lathan would go 2 for 3 with 2 RBI’s and 1 run scored, Jake Higgins went 1 for 2 with a double and one run scored, Cam Maxwell singled and scored a run, Joey Biletski recorded a double, and Simon Green singled. For the Twins, Adam Woodworth re- corded a triple, Jacob Iten singled, and Aiden Riggi recorded a single. Cam Riggi, twins third baseman, also made an outstanding diving catch in the third in- ning of the game. Indians 7 Red Sox 4 Neither rain nor wind could prevent the In- dians and Red Sox from taking the field on Friday night. The home Indians would start hot by holding the Sox scoreless in the 1st and put 3 on the board in the bottom half highlighted by Iaein Frawley’s double off the wall. The Indians would add another in the 4th after Cal Koukides drove in Maicen McKenzie. However, the Red Sox would not go down quietly. In the 3rd inning, Zander Cole and Zach Samis would get back to back hits, followed by a Josh Horner sin- gle driving in Cole. With no one out, Joey Stephany would drill a liner to right field giving the Red Sox fans hope of cutting into the lead even further, but Joey Vernacinni came up with a huge catch to hold the runners. Tony Martinez would follow driving in Samis to make the score 4-2 after 3. The game would remain 4-2 until the top of th 5th inning. With one out Joey Stephany would stroll to the plate a drill another liner to right. This time it would fall in and go all the way to the wall for a stand up triple. Wyatt Draper would hit in Stephany and then Peter Clark would come up with a clutch hit to tie the game at 4. In the bottom of the 5th, Jagger Smith, CJ Zglinicki, and Colin Greene would all drive in runs to give the Indians a 7-4 lead and the eventual win. Alex Stepha- ny, Tony Martinez, and Wyatt Draper would all make appearances on the mound for the Sox. Maicen McKenzie pitched well for the Indi- ans, but did not factor in the decision. Austin Bogue would enter in relief of McKenzie and record the win going 1 2/3 innings. Hitting for the Indians were Maicen McKen- zie (2 hits), Chase Cummings, Cal Koukides (2 hits), Iaein Frawley (double), Austin Bogue, Jagger Smith, William Bogan, and Colin Greene. Hitting for the Red Sox were Josh Horner, Joey Stephany (triple), Tony Martinez (2 hits), Peter Clark, Zander Cole, and Zach Samis. Tigers 8 A’s 1 The third Saturday of the 2018 season was kicked off by the A’s and Tigers on a beautiful Sat- urday morning. The first three innings would be a pitching duel between Connor Hegeman of the Tigers and the team of Ryan Shirley and Jackson Fix for the A’s. The game would enter the 4th inning in a 0-0 tie. The Tigers would be the first on the scoreboard scor- ing 2 in the top of the 4th inning. Connor Hegeman would belt a two out double scoring Grant Northrup and Alex Spezzano who had reached on consecutive walks. Tigers 2,A’s 0. The Tigers would open it up in the 5th scoring 6 runs with 2 outs. Aidan Weaver sin- gled; Grant Northrup walked and afterAlex Spezzano reached first Connor Hegeman doubled two home fol- lowed by singles by Jackson Spezzano, Lily Uberty and Josh Noble. Tigers 8, A’s 0. The A’s would get on the board in the 6th inning on a walk by Jackson Fix who would score after stealing 2nd and 3rd and coming home on a passed ball. Tigers 8, A’s 1. Leading the Tigers offensively was Connor Hegeman who was 2-4 with a run scored, walk and 4 RBI. Jackson Spezzano was 1-2 with a run scored and 3 walks. Lily Uberty was 1-3 with a walk and run scored. Josh Noble added a hit and RBI. Noah Kaczanowski had a hit and RBI. Sierra Burk, Cam Wilson and Aidan Weaver all added singles with Aidan Weaver also scoring a run. Grant Northrup scored twice to go with his 2 walks and Alex Spez- zano walked twice and scored twice. Connor Hege- man was the winning pitcher throwing 5 1/3 shutout innings while allowing 1 hit, 2 walks and striking out 13 batters. Lily Uberty recorded the final two outs for the Tigers. For the A’s, Hayven Cortes was 1-1. Jackson Fix reached base 3 times walking twice, reaching base after being hit by a pitch and scored a run. Ryan Shirley walked. Pitching for the A’s was Ryan Shir- ley who started and threw 2 1/3 innings. Jackson Fix threw 2 2/3 innings. Grady Gilligan 1/3 inning and Zach Tooley recorded the final three outs. Yankees 11 Red Sox 10 (7 innings) The Yankees and Red Sox would battle for 7 innings in a back and forth matchup. The home team Red Sox took the field behind hard throwing pitch- er Josh Horner. Horner went to work early holding the Yankees scoreless in the first. The Yankees Jake Higgins would single in the inning but was left on base. Taking the mound for the Yankees Jake Hig- gins would get off to a tough start. The Red Sox Josh Horner would lead things off with a double, Joe Stephany would walk and then Antonio Marti- nez stepped to the plate and drove the ball over the right field fence for his first home run of the season to put the Red Sox up 3-0. Wyatt Draper followed this with a double. Higgins would battle back and strike out 2 batters to end the inning. In the second inning, Horner held the Yankees scoreless striking out 2 batters, while Higgins returned the favor strik- ing out 2 Red Sox batters. In the third, Wyatt Draper took over the pitching duties for the Red Sox. In the top of the third inning the Yankees would get the bats going. Luke Lathan led off the inning with a sin- gle, followed by a Jake Higgins single. A 2 run RBI double by Andrew Pocock would get the Yankees on the scoreboard. Simon Green would then single to drive in Pocock to tie the game at 3. In the bottom of the inning Antonio Martinez would score a run to put the Red Sox back on top 4-3. In the fourth, Joey Biletski started things off for the Yankees with a double, followed by an Avante Walker single. Jake Higgins would single to score Biletski and Walker. The Yankees would retake the lead 5-4. Luke Lathan took over the pitching duties for the Yankees. Once again the Red Sox battled back. Jayce Panepento and Josh Horner both singled and were scored on a Tony Martinez 2 RBI double. After 4, Red Sox 6 Yankees 5. In the Fifth the Yankees would tie the score at 6 af- ter Simon Green singled, Cam Maxwell singled, and then Joey Biletski singled to drive in Green. For the Red Sox, DJ O’Geen and Cole Tonzi both singled but were left on base. The 6th inning saw the Yankees put up 4 runs after Luke Lathan doubled, Jake Higgins, Andrew Pocock, Jack Currin and X-Man all singled to put the Yankees up 10-6. Not to be outdone, in the bottom of the 6th the Red Sox would score 4 of their own, to tie the game at 10 after hits by Joe Stephany, Antonio Martinez, Wyatt Draper, Peter Clark, and DJ O’Geen. In extra Innings, Andrew Pocock would hit his first home run of the year to give the Yankees the lead. In the bottom of the seventh Luke Lathan struck out 2 batters to save the win for the Yankees. A great game was played by both teams. Indians 8 Twins 3 The Twins hosted the Indians in the 3rd game of the day on Saturday. The visiting Indians would strike first after Iaein Frawley drove in Chase Cum- mings who walked earlier in the inning. The Twins would bring things even in the 1st inning after Tony Piazza scored on a double hit by Ayden Riggi. The Indians would regain the lead in the top of the 3rd inning. Maicen McKenzie would lead off the inning with a double to left. He would later score on a ball hit by Cal Koukides. The Twins would tie the game at 2 after Pizza drove in Adam Woodworth and then take the lead in the 4th when Cam Riggi scored on a Dylan Maciag hit. The Indians would bat around in the 5th and plate McKenzie, Koukides, and Frawley to capture a 5-3 lead. The Indians tacked on 3 more in the 6th highlighted by Koukides’ triple which drove in 2 runs. Iaein Frawley pitched a gem for the Indians going the distance, allowing 3 runs on 6 hits, striking out 12 and walking none. Ayden Riggi, Tony Piazza, and Jacob Iten all pitched well for the Twins. Hitting for the Indians were Maicen McK- enzie (2 hits), Chase Cummings (2 hits), Cal Kou- kides (single, triple), Iaein Frawley (double), Austin Bogue, Jagger Smith, and William Bogan. Hitting for the Twins were Adam Woodworth, Tony Pizza (2 hits), Ayden Riggi (double), Cam Riggi (double), and Dylan Maciag. Orioles 3 White Sox 1 The final game on Saturday featured a pitch- er’s duel, with the Orioles’ Drew Strollo matching up against the White Sox hurler Jude Sherman. The game was scoreless through 4 innings, as the White Sox defense made play after play behind Sherman, while Strollo fanned the first 9 batters and 11 of the first 12. The Orioles finally broke through in the bot- tom in the 5th inning. Rookie Mia Strollo started the rally drawing a walk. Big brother Drew also earned a base on balls, and both advanced on a passed ball. With one out, big Merritt Holly stepped to the plate and delivered a laser shot to right field. The ball ad- vanced all the way to the wall, and Holly sped around the bases to complete the inside the park HR, giving the Orioles a 3-0 lead. The White Sox began a rally in the top of the 6th with a single by Parker Dowell. The speedster ended up on 3rd after a couple of passed balls, even- tually scoring on a fielder’s choice by Landen Saeva. However, the Orioles defense would shut the White Sox rally down, preserving a 3-1 win. Jude Sherman was outstanding in his first ca- reer start, keeping Orioles hitters off balance. Sher- man would pitch 4 innings, striking out 4 and only allowing 3 runs. Tommy Condidorio would close out the game, striking out 3 batters out of the 5 he faced in one inning. Parker Dowell and Landen Saeva sin- gled, with Dowell scoring. Condidorio and Tommy Clifford each drew walks. Merritt Holly led the offensive attack with a double, inside the park HR and 3 RBI. Mia Strollo drew a critical walk and scored the first run of the game, while Drew Strollo also walked and scored. Adrian Stephens, Holden Sullivan, and Jace Je- drewski all had hits as well. Martin MacConnell also walked. Drew Strollo was dominant on the mound, go- ing 5 1/3 innings to earn the win. Strollo would strike out 15 while only walking two, and accounted for 2 of the other 3 putouts. Merritt Holly came on in the 6th to get the final two outs to earn the save.
