That word is assessment. Recently the new assessments have been sent out, so I thought I might throw out some random information to ease some of the anguish. The state encourages a complete update in assessment review anytime they feel that the values are not what the current market is showing. The good news is the property values are stronger than they have been in quite some time, the demand is high and the sup- ply is very low. Your new assessment is based on recent sales of homes comparable to yours. The assessor encourages anyone who feels that their assessment is not fair to make an appointment with them to review your property before grieving your assessment to the Board of Assessment review. If you would like to set up an appoint- ment to speak with someone at the assessor’s office the number is 768-6910 X221. The second part to this falls on each of the boards to keep scrutinizing their spending to manage the rate. Over the past years, I believe the Village Board has kept a hard line on spending and tried to keep a stable rate in place. We have negotiated fair contracts with modest raises of about 1% annually over the last 10 years. We have changed health care providers three or four times in an effort to save money and offer like coverage. We will continue to operate like this, and not just spend money because our assessment has gone up. This year we raised the village rate 11 cents per thousand, this is based off the old assessment. When next year comes around we will look to see if we can lower the rate. I also believe the Town and School Boards have acted as we have in a very responsible way, give them the chance to act as they have in the past. Unfortunately, the county may need the increase more than everyone else, dealing with all of the state mandates and large projects they have coming in the near future.
