LE ROY PENNYSAVER & NEWS - JUNE 26, 2016 Little League - Scanlan Cup Playoffs QUARTER-FINALS Twins 6 Tigers 5 The Twins were able to pull out a nine inning thriller against the Tigers in the first game of the Scan- lan Cup playoffs. The Tigers scored a run in the first inning. Robbie Newmark and Jackson Spezzano would both reach on singles. Merritt Holly also had a single in the inning scoring Newmark. The Twins answered in the bot- tom half of the inning after a lead off single by Colin McCulley, Brett Babcock ripped a double bringing McCulley around to score. After the Tigers went down in order in the second inning the Twins would add to the lead. Aiden Davis reached base on a walk for the Twins. With two outs ColinMcCulley hammered a ball over the right fielder for a inside the park HR, scoring two. In the third inning the Tigers took the lead back when Jackson Spezzano hit a triple that scored Newmark and Adam Risewick after they had collected singles. Dylan Maciag also chipped in with nice single to right field. Risewick went on to hit a single and score the Tigers final run in the fifth. Down by two runs in the fifth inning the Twins were able to cut the lead in half after Brett Babcock reached on a single and worked his way to third with a steal and past ball. Jackson Locke hit him in with a single, which was his third of the game. The Twins would need to use the hammer, last bats, to extend the game. Antonio Martinez drew a walk. Next up Kaden Burger who did his part with a base knock. Aiden Davis was hit by a pitch and Matthew Beswick was able to work a walk. With bases loaded ColinMc- Culley put the ball in play scoring Burger from third. The game would remain knotted at 5 until the bot- tom of the ninth. McCulley started things off with a one out single. Cole Rauscher would also get on with a single, and Brett Babcock walked. With bases loaded Jackson Locke came to the plate. The second pitch to Locke made its way to the back stop allowing McCulley to score the game winning run. This truly was a epic Little League game. All who watched were entertained and all who participated could walk away with their heads held high knowing that they left it all out on the field. White Sox 1 A’s 0 The second game of the play- offs Tuesday night pitted the 2nd seeded A’s against the 7th seeded White Sox. Both teams started the game with their aces on the mound, Kenny Saunders starting for the Sox and Shawn Morabito for the A’s. With the lower seeded White Sox batting first Chase Cummings started off the game with a single. Chase then quickly advanced on a pass ball and ended up scoring on an overthrow. That would be the only score for either team the rest of the game. Both teams pitched very well in what became a defensive game. In the second inning Shawn Mora- bito would single and Matt Covert would draw a walk for the A’s, both advancing to 2nd and 3rd on a pass ball. Shawn then got caught stealing home on a pass ball, and Matt covert was also tagged out trying to score on the same play. Kenny would then strikeout the next batter ending the inning. The White Sox defense was strengthened with great plays in the field by Josh Nobel snagging a line drive at Short Stop, and Alex Dowell digging out a couple plays at first base with some beautiful scoops. In the end, the 1 run scored in the first inning would prove to be the difference. Kenny Saunders pitched a gem striking out 13 batters and only allowing 2 hits, and completing a full game. Those 2 hits for the A’s were from Jackson Fix, and Shawn Morabito both getting on with sin- gles. Pitching very well for the A’s were Shawn Morabito and Brady Fix who combined for 10 strikeouts and only allowed 1 run on just 7 hits for the game. Hiiting for the White Sox were Chase Cummings with a single, Fin Shelby with 2 singles, Kenny Saunders with a single, Mike Buccina had 2 singles, and Parker Dowell added a single. What a great game by both teams! Yankees 2 Orioles 1 In the first round of the Scanlon Cup Tournament the 6th seeded Yan- kees were able to pull off the upset victory over the third seeded Orioles. The game proved to be a defensive battle with only 5 total hits allowed. In the top of the first for the Yankees Tommy Condidorio singled, but was left on third to end the inning. In the bottom of 1 The Strollo brothers, Drew and Tyler led the inning off with singles. Drew would eventual- ly score and Tyler would be left on third to end the inning. After 1 the Orioles led 1-0. In the third inning the Yankees would tie the game at one after Gianni Ferrara singled, and with some aggressive base running was able to steal his way home. The Yankees would get the winning run in the 4th. Connor Hagemen reached base after a dropped third strike and an errant throw to first base. The speedy Hagemen raced around the bases to score the run. The Yan- kees defense came up big all game with a key catch in center field by Connor Hagemen and 3 put outs by Yankees second baseman Jake Hig- gins. Pitching for the Orioles Jimmy Burns was intimidating as always, striking out 14 Yankees batters and only giving up 2 hits. Pitching for the Yankees, Gianni Ferrara struck out 8 batters and only allowed 3 hits. Ferrara took over the game in the bottom of the 6th inning striking out the final three batters to ensure the win for the Yankees. Indians 6 Red Sox 1 The Indians and Red Sox would meet in the 4 vs 5 see match up of the playoffs. The visiting Red Zsox would threaten in the top of the 1st, but would come up empty. The Indians would get 1 in the bottom of the 1st when Zach Vanderhoof hit a ball to right field and make its way to the wall. Zach would make it all the way around to score a run. The teams would go scoreless until the 4th inning when the Red Sox got on the board after a lead off walk by Luke Caccamise. Luke would score on a single hit by Bryce Lathan. However, the Indians would score 2 on a single hit by Cory Wallace. Then Indians would score 3 more in the 5th inning to expand the lead to 6-1. Zach Vanderhoof was brilliant on the mound striking out 11, walk- ing 2, and allowing only 1 run. Joey Brennen pitched well for the Red Sox striking out 6 batters. Hitting for the Indians were Maveric McKenzie, Tony Piazza, Zach Vanderhoof (2 doubles),Cory Wallace (2 hits), and Connor McGee. Hitting for the Red Sox were John Panepento, Bryce Lathan (2 hits), Ayden Riggi, and Luke Lathan SEMI-FINALS White Sox 4 Twins 3 In the Semi-Final round we had the number 1 seeded Twins Vs the number 7 seeded White Sox. Start- ing the Game for the Twins on the mound was Cole Rauscher. The White Sox would Jump out to an early lead with Chase Cummings legging out a single followed by back to back RBI double by Kenny Saun- ders, andMike Buccina. Mike would then score on an overthrow bringing the tally to 3-0 White Sox. The Twins would come back to plate 1 in the bottom of the first inning. Colin McCulley would smack a double and Cole Rauscher would drive him in. The White Sox bats would then go cold through the next 3 innings. The Twins would score another run in the bottom of the second when Aiden Davis walked and was driven in by another Colin McCulley double. In the fifth inning the White sox would get one more run across thanks to a Fin Shelby infield single, and a RBI Triple by Kenny Saunders. That last run would prove to be import- ant going into the 6th inning. In a drama filled bottom of the 6th Colin McCulley would walk and score on a single by Jackson Locke. It also saw and Unbelieveable catch in left field by Joey Biletsky which may have saved the game for the Sox!!! The White Sox then closed the door by striking out 2 batters and ending the threat. Pitching great for the White Sox were Fin Shelby, and Mike Buc- cina. Pitching for the Twins were Cole Rauscher, and Colin McCulley. Hitting for the Twins were ColinMc- Culley with 2 doubles, and a single, Cole Rauscher had a single, Brett Babcock had 2 singles, and Jackson Locke with a single. Hitting for the White Sox were Chase Cummings with a single, Fin Shelby had a sin- gle, Kenny Saunders with a double, and a triple, Mike Buccina with a double, Alex Dowell had a single, and Parker Dowell added a single as well. Another well played game by both teams! Indians 6 Yankees 3 The Indians and Yankees would meet in the second round of the playoffs for a chance to play for the Scanlan Cup. The visiting Yan- kees would strike first after a lead off single by Gianni Ferrara. G would score on a ball hit by Tommy Condidorio. The Indians would come back in the bottom of the 1st inning with Maicen McKenzie and Zach Vanderhoof scoring. After a scoreless 2nd inning, the Yankees would score 2. Gianni Ferrara would score on a ball hit by Ryan Higgins. Ryan would later score on a double by Connor Hegeman. The Indians would tie it in the bottom of the 3rd after Tony Piazza drove in Zach Vanderhoof. The Indians would then take the lead in the bottom of the 4th after Cory Wallace hit in Maveric McKenzie and Zach Vanderhoof. The Indians would expand the lead in the 5th when Maveric McKenzie hit in Jude Sherman. Maveric McK- enzie pitched will for the Indians, pitching a complete game allowing 3 runs while scattering 7 hits and striking out 8. Hitting for the Indians were Mav- eric McKenzie (single, double), Zach Vanderhoof (2 hits), Tony Piazza, Cory Wallace (single, double), and Connor McGee. Hitting for the Yankees were Gianni Ferrara (2 hits), Tom Condi- dorio, Connor Hegeman (2 doubles), Adam Woodworth, and Landen Saeva.
