AMERICAN LEGION

LE ROY, NEW YORK
SUMMARY OF MONTHLY MEETING

NOV. 6, 2000 - Commander Harry Garner called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. Monday evening October 16, 2000. All members were present or accounted for.

After the reading and approval of past minutes and Treasurerís report the following business was discussed:

November 11, 2000 was set as the date for our annual Turkey dinner to be prepared by the Auxiliary in the Legion dinning hall.

It was agreed on to hold the annual Veterans' Day ceremony at 11 oíclock on the Legion grounds. There will be a flag burning ceremony as well; it will be held in the back of the bowling lanes.

The bowling chairman reported that the new season was off to a great start and that open bowling was doing well. He also reported that the new lighting system had been installed for the special late night bowling program on Saturdays.

First Vice Commander and Chairman of the Junior Air Rifle Team Gary Hartley reported that he had 16 new students signed up for the new year. He and his staff are preparing the students for the annual state championship matches to be held in Utica this Spring. He also requested that local sportsman clubs be contacted for monetary support to help offset the costs of new rifles. Jim Woodard volunteered to contact them.

The fund raising committee has decided to have another TV raffle this year, which will begin by November 1st and the drawing will be on Super Sunday. It was agreed on to sell the tickets at the same price as last year; which was $1 each or 3 for $2. Commander Harry said he would pick up a 32" TV this week.

Commander Harry read the thank you letter from Michael Barefoot who was our choice for the Boys State award this past year. It was an emotional reading as Michael (in his own emotional way) said how glad he was to have been able to partake in this program and that he had learned much about the political system and patriotism. The Commander noted that letters received like this prove how important our youth programs are and strengthens our faith in the young men of our country.

Bob Forbes reported on the new flag pole that the Village and Town had installed ( after much hard coercion by Bob) at the Village office building over the Summer.

November 9th was selected as the date for the Korean War Veteranís dinner. The dinner will be held in the dinning hall. It was voted on that any Korean Vet and their spouse would be given a free dinner. All quests will be charged $7 each. It was also decided on that November 3rd would be the cut-off for reservations.

The following awards were presented to the Legion: Americanism Citation (for outstanding service to the community); and, Children and Youth Citation (for outstanding achievement in youth programs. Both awards were issued by the National Office for service during 1999 and 2000.

The following funerals were attended: William F. Bushman.

The membership committee reported that we have received 272 renewals which is on schedule for this time of the year but still only half way to our goal. Several volunteers agreed to pass out to the Village business places "Why you should belong to THE AMERICAN LEGION" pamplets for public distribution.

It was agreed on to allow the Le Roy Rotary Club to hold their annual appliance raffle on November 19th in our dining hall.

In closing, the Commander read a notice from the VA Healthcare Center that there would be an enrollment session for veterans on Saturday, November 11th from 9 a.m. to noon at the Batavia Center located at 222 Richmond Avenue. He also advised all veterans to sign up as soon as possible.

With no other business to conduct, Commander Garner closed the meeting.
